2. Direct Speech
Direct speech is a sentence (or several
sentences) that reports speech or thought in its
original form, as phrased by the original speaker.
Example: "I'm going to the cinema", he said
3. Indirect Speech
Indirect speech, also called reported speech or
indirect discourse, is a means of expressing the
content of statements, questions or other
utterances, without quoting them explicitly as
is done in direct speech.
Example:
Direct Speech: "I'm going to the cinema", he said.
Indirect Speech: He said he was going to the cinema.
4. Tense Change
As a rule when you report something someone has
said you go back a tense.
Example:
Simple Present
→
He said, ”I work hard.”
Present Continous
→
He said, “I’m working hard.”
Past Perfect
→
She said, "The lesson had already
started when he arrived."
Simple Past
He said he worked hard.
Past Continous
He said he was working hard.
Past Perfect
NO CHANGE!
