1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Within our film sequence, we show the audience
three characters, the ghost, the Superior and
Rosemary Bloggs. We quickly establish the ghost to
be evil and corrupted by using a black and white
effect and slowly zooming into her face, then a
sudden change of picture quality when she screams
into the camera. We decided to make her hair cover
parts of her face, making her look more menacing
and the make-up was not a main priority as the shot
would be in black and white so the make-up would
not be noticed. Finally, we made her wear casual
clothing to allow the audience to know what era the
film would be set in and where it will be set. This
gives the audience the feeling of a bad presence in
the film opening and allows them to see that the
ghost is the antagonist.
After the credit sequence we introduce the Superior and
Rosemary Bloggs. They are stood talking by the seaside
in daylight, with many different camera angles which
show that the Superior is giving information to
Rosemary. This gives the audience the understanding
that this man is her boss and she is the protagonist. This
is very common in psychological horror movies as
detectives in this genre of films are generally women.
This therefore allows them to figure out that somewhere
in the film a conflict will happen with the ghost and
Rosemary, intriguing them. Furthermore, Rosemary talks
very little during these scenes giving the audience the
sense that she is not in charge of this conversation. This
not only reflects the respect she has for her superior, but
also the fact that the man is dominant in these scenes
shows the gender inequality that is present in modern day society. This is shown through
over the shoulder shots looking towards Rosemary, but are looking down on her.
Rosemary is wearing a cream blazer, a black top and black
tights. This type of clothing is very casual when meeting
with your boss showing the relationship between the two
detectives is very friendly and respectful. Similarly, the
Superior is wearing a white shirt with the top button un-
done and blue jeans. This again is very casual showing the
friendliness between the two characters. There are many
over the shoulder shots during these clips emphasising the

2. casual-like conversation between the two characters,
and also showing both characters are listening to
each other. There are many normal cuts from one
shot to the other giving the sense that both
characters have a lot to talk about and there are fade
to black shots showing their conversation has been
going on for a long time. This shows that both
characters have lots of information that needs to be
established between them both and shows that both
characters are professionals. Finally, Rosemary’s hair
has been tied back and is neat whilst the Superiors
hair is styled but has a messy look. This shows their
personalities and their overall attitude to their work.
This links with their body language as Rosemary’s is
very closed as she is (although friendly) very
uncomfortable talking to her boss and therefore
makes an effort to look professional when she goes
to meet him. Whilst the Superior is a lot more
comfortable and wants to seemless imposing so therefore looks less professional and keeps
his body language open and comforting.
