2. Carols of the spring
A swallow comes from the Black Sea
She flew over the sea and sat and sang:
My dear lady, come out to the cellar and bring
me eggs for the Lent
And red and white ribbons to tie to my hand
If you don’t have eggs, we’ll get the hen
To lay eggs and have chicks that will follow her

• "HELIDONISMΑΤΑ” or Spring caroling is a
custom held at the beginning of March, a
melodic welcome of Spring with special songs
that children sing as they go round from house
to house holding a wreath of flowers and a
wooden toy in the shape of a swallow that has
"magical power".
• The children, with their song, invoke the true
swallows to come to their place and bring along
Spring and Lent and eggs and help the rebirth of
the earth.

of Spring when we see the blossoming
almond trees as early as in mid-February
10. Animals that “wake up” in Spring
Hibernation is characterized by a state of long
hypnosis in which many animals fall during winter,
especially those living at colder places. During
hibernation, the metabolism of these animals slows
down and their body temperature decreases. With
the coming of Spring, when the temperature starts
to rise, the animals “wake up”. Let’s meet some of
the animals that hibernate in Greece.
