Students at St. Mary's Episcopal School in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, worked with their peers at Al Resala Independent Secondary School for Girls in Doha, Qatar to investigate the effects of climate change on the Mississippi River. They created an awareness campaign and made this presentation as a result of research conducted through field trips and water quality monitoring. This student project was created as part of Connecting Cultures, Exploring Science: Road to Doha 2013-14, a youth virtual exchange program that connects students in North America and Qatar. It is run by Global Nomads Group, in partnership with Qatar Foundation International.

2. The Impact of Climate
Change
 Memphis, TN, is located directly on the Mississippi
River. As temperatures increase, the numbers of extreme
wet and dry spells are likely to increase as well.
Droughts and floods become more common, while
periods of ideal precipitation are likely to decrease. This
has a major effect on the water levels on the Mississippi
River, and has been, and could continue to disrupt, not
only the recreation and industry associated with our
area, but our safety and security as well. Barges and
towboats may have difficulty traveling due to extreme
high or low water levels, and recreational boating may
become restricted or dangerous. Increased downpours
and floods raise the amount of runoff pollution and trash
entering the river, exposing aquatic life to more sediment
and chemicals.

3. On May 10, 2011, the Mississippi River crested at 48
feet, just inches shy of the record set in 1937; and thus,
flooded major parts of the city of Memphis, Tennessee.
