Global terrorism impacts many communities around the world. Cooperation, cultural acceptance, and education can help countries work together to eliminate terrorism and build peace. This requires open dialogue and understanding different political and social perspectives. The United States supports Tunisia's transition to democracy after the 2011 revolution, committing over $350 million to strengthen civil society, empower citizens, and promote economic growth and stability. The experience of interacting with Tunisian students through a cultural exchange program taught valuable lessons about both the differences and similarities between their cultures while also developing mutual understanding.
2. Identifying our problem...
Global terrorism impacts communities around the world. Cooperation, cultural
acceptance, and education can help the United States work with nations around
the globe to eradicate terrorism and build a peaceful future. This cannot occur
without an open dialogue and an understanding of our political and social
identities on both sides.
3. Respect/Gain Perspective
โFirst, acknowledge that there are stereotypes- spread
awareness
โBecome aware of our inner thoughts and how they
affect our actions
โHave a thought, follow it up with another thought based
on actual factual information
โGain more awareness and knowledge about racial and
cultural groups, not only will our stereotypes lessen, but
we will also become better equipped to educate and
challenge others about their own stereotypes
โBecome willing to engage in honest dialogue with
others about race and culture that at times might be
difficult, risky, and uncomfortable
โLeave comfort zones, expose selves to people of
different races and cultures

How do we dispel stereotypes? What do we
need in order to gain perspective?

5. Political Differences
Tunisia is a strong partner of the United States and the
U.S. Government is supporting Tunisia in its transition to
democracy. The United States also supports Tunisia as it
lays the foundation for political stability and economic
prosperity, including efforts to strengthen civil society,
empower kids, support economic reform, and create
jobs.
Since the January 2011 revolution, the U.S. has
committed more than $350 million to support Tunisiaโs
transition. U.S. assistance to Tunisia focuses on an array
of targeted areas that include ensuring and enhancing
internal and external security, promoting democratic
practices and supporting sustainable economic growth.
6. Solutions
Educate people about Islam vs Terrorism and the difference between the two
Eliminate the term โRadical Islamic Terrorismโ
When we use the termโRadical Islamic Terrorismโ it immediately attacks people of the Islamic faith. It
tells them that the US is going to fight terrorism as well as the Islamic faith
Proposing treaties in terms of joint collaboration in the fight against terror
Since 2011, US has given upwards of $100 million towards Tunisiaโs Ministry of Defense to counter
terrorism
7. How can we help More than Words with their literacy project?
- Send them a newspaper each week- current world events can help to give them insight
into our perspective while giving them a variety of material to read and become interested
in
- Put together a book package- people can donate new or gently used books that we can
send to More than Words for them to distribute at all grade levels from elementary to
secondary education
- Use money to create incentive for teachers to work harder at an elementary school level
so that children can grow up with basic literacy rather than attempt to gain it later on
- Create pen pals for each student or pair of students.
Slogans /Quotes for Literacy:
- โA child who reads will be an adult who thinks.โ -Sasha Salmina
- โA book is a gift you can open again and again.โ -Garrison Keillor
- โWords change worlds.โ
- โLiteracy is the most basic currency in an economy of knowledge.โ -Barack Obama

8. Lessons Learned
The experience through GNG has taught us that the Tunisians are a lot
different than us; however, they also have similar views as us. We also
learned a lot about Tunisian culture and life due to their questions, answers,
and showcases. They showed us different Tunisian foods, music and the
national anthem. The Tunisian students felt that President Trump was labeling
muslims as terrorists.
This experience has been valuable because we developed an understanding
of how different their lives are from ours. Through this understanding we got
closer to people across the world and identified the struggles of foreign
interactions.
