2. PASTICHE
Although there is no implicit link to
one film, the scene of walking
down a prison aisle is something
featured in many prison films,
namely Escape From Alcatraz
and The Shawshank
Redemption.
3. HOMAGE
Homage to the film Kill Bill, which
features the exact car, driven by
the protagonist.
Pussy Wagon, from Kill Bill Pussy Wagon remake, from
Telephone
4. BRICOLAGE
These two shots borrow features from noir films but also old
cartoons. The first screenshot makes reference to old noir films
which had no dialogue, so needed the aid of subtitles. The
second shot shows how they have referenced a stereotype of
old cartoons in which certain moments of action would be
supplemented by words which indicate a certain thing
happening.
5. BREAKING DOWN THE FOURTH WALL
This is a feature used to connect with
the audience in either a dramatic or
comedic way. In this case it is done for
dramatic effect to emphasize the bad
nature of the man. It also, in this case,
adds satire to the scene.
6. INTERTEXTUALITY
Many of the shots in the telephone music video are making reference to
parts in Quentin Tarantino films. This is most notable from the café
scene which is very similar to that of Pulp Fiction. From similar use of
cinematography and mise en scene, it could be said that Beyonce’s
character is in reference to Honey Bunny from Pulp Fiction. This is
reinforced by Beyonce’s character name being ’Honey Bee’.
