search for Shackleton’s ship

Captained by Edward Shackleton, the
Endurance was a ship that became trapped
in Antarctic ice and sank in 1915. For many
years, people thought that finding the wreck of
the Endurance was impossible because of the
freezing Antarctic weather.
Now a scientific expedition will try to find and
film the wreck. Endurance22 will sail early next
year, in a ship that will force its way through
miles of pack ice. However, climate change will
make it easier for the ship to make progress
because there will be less ice.
Mensun Bound, director of exploration, led
the 2019 search for the Endurance that failed
because of extreme weather conditions. ‘I have
mixed emotions. On the one hand, I’m excited.
On the other hand, for the last three years, I’ve
been very sad that we didn’t find it last time.
That ship is always in my imagination,’ he said.
Shackleton’s attempt to cross Antarctica is a
story of bravery and survival. The Endurance
became trapped in ice for months before
sinking. The men drifted on ice floes for
months. Finally, they reached the uninhabited
Elephant Island, where they lived off penguins
and seal meat. Shackleton and five others
then sailed to the island of South Georgia in a
whale boat and then rescued the others from
Elephant Island. All 28 of the crew returned
home alive.
People believe that the wreck of the Endurance
lies at a depth of more than 3,000 metres. The
wooden parts of the ship are probably in good
condition because the water is extremely cold.
There is no light and very little oxygen.
The ship for Endurance22 will leave Cape
Town early next year. It has ice-breakers
that will force their way through the pack
ice. Bound said: ‘It is a battle. Last time, we
ourselves became trapped in the ice, not once
but several times, just as the Endurance did,
and it was worrying.’

The team will use underwater search vehicles
to look for the wreck. John Shears, the
expedition leader, said that with the cutting-edge
technology, ‘there has never been as good an
opportunity to find Endurance’.
‘We know that the ship’s navigator’s last
recording of its position was almost three days
before it sank,’ said Bound. ‘What was the
ship doing in those three days? What was the
speed and direction? I have to think about all
those things.’

of exploration of the polar regions. Despite all the
ice there, Antarctica is surprisingly the driest of the
seven continents. The Norwegian explorer Roald
Amundsen reached the South Pole in 1911. The
American Robert Peary claimed to have reached
the North Pole in 1909, but this claim was never
verified. The seven countries with territorial claims
in Antarctica are Argentina, Australia, Chile, France,
New Zealand, Norway and the UK. Five other
countries have or had scientific stations there.
