Management of discipline
Concept and meaning
Discipline is the regulation and modulation of human activities to produce controlled
performance.
It means orderly behavior of individuals towards the desired goal.
Harmonious/healthy work relations depends on maintenance of discipline.
Definition
Discipline is a procedure that corrects or punishes a subordinate because a rule of
procedure has been violated.
Dessler, 2001
Discipline should be viewed as a condition within an org. whereby employees know
what is expected of them in terms of the rules, std. and policies and what are the
consequences of infractions.
Rue &Byars, 1996
Discipline is defined as a force that prompts individuals/groups to observe rules,
procedure which are deemed to be necessary for the effective functioning of an
Organization.
Discipline: there interpretations
Positive discipline:- create positive climate.
Employees willingly follow the rules, regulation and desired std. of behavior.
It is possible only when fair and equitable compensation, supportive superior, better
Understanding etc.
Negative discipline:-
Employees do not follow rules and regulations.
Disciplinary programs force to obey order and function through warning, fear, penalties
And other farms of punishment.
Self-discipline & control:-”A constructive way of correcting undesirable behaviors”.
Discipline is the essence of life. absence of this means chaos and disorder.
It should not be brought about by fear, it should be brought voluntarily.
Corrects knowledge, attitude, behavior or conduct.
Principles
Punishment seldom produces the desired results, often it produces undesirable
 results.
A self respecting person tend to be a better worker than one who is not.
Objectives
To enforce rules and regulations
To punish the offender.
To serve an example to others to follow rules.
To ensure the smooth running of the org.
To increase working efficiency.
To maintain industrial peace.
To improve working relations and tolerance.
To develop a working culture which improves performance.
Causes of indiscipline
Absence of effective leadership
Unfair management practices.
Communication barrier- absence of upward communication.
Divide and rule policy.
Inadequate attention to personal problems.
Two approaches
1)Positive approach
An oral reminder- initial formal phase to identify work problem and attempt to correct
It before it becomes larger.
A written reminder- a more formalized version.
A decision-making leave- time off leave from work usually with pay.
Deciding day- provide an opportunity to make a choice, correct the behavior or face
Separation from company.
