WHO AM I
You are not this body; you are spirit self
The body goes on changing, but the change is never in
self
Lesson-03
WHAT IS THE SOUL AND WHAT IS THE BODY? WHO ARE
WE – SOUL OR BODY?
Soul is actuallywho we are – our real own self. Our body
is what belongs to us. We use our body to do different
activities just like a man uses a machine to do his work.
But the man is not the machine. Similarly, we are not the
body; we are just using the body.
Once, Srila Prabhupad was lecturingfew students. He
asked one boy to show his hand. He showed. Then he
asked, “Show me your head.” He did so. So Prabhupad
said, “You have told me that it was your hand and your
head and your body. So if it is your body so tell me where
are you?” The boy was confused. Srila Prabhupadatold
him to sit down. Then he explained that we are spirit soul
and we are using this body but we are not this body. The
2. soul is an atomic spark, which is the source of life within
the body. When the soul leaves body, it is called dead.
Have you seen peopleweeping and crying when their
relative is dead? They say, “He was very nice. Now he
has gone.” So where has he gone? The body is still lying
there. That means it is the soul that has left. So the soul is
our identity. Have you seen film stars or celebrities
coming on TV and saying, “I am going to donatemy
eyes, or liver or kidneys to hospital after my death.”
When are you going to donateyours? What does that
mean? This means when we leave body we no longer care
for the body anymore. We are ready to donateit to
whoever requires it. But if we ask how many of these film
stars are ready to donatetheir eyes while living, hardly
anyone will be ready. Thus it is the soul that gives value
to the body. Otherwise the body is useless.
