Evaluation Question 7 Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Front Cover – Preliminary The good things about my preliminary front cover is that I had a curved Masthead. I also had exciting text which was slanted and coloured. This made it look more eye catching. There is also direct address with the students in the image looking straight at the camera. There are many bad things about this. Although the it does not seem apparent too bad, there is a white space between the masthead and the image. Also there is no consistency with colours as we have a large amount of images and also a variety of fonts. Part of the image is cut off which is very unprofessional and the front cover looks very simple and unattractive. I also put in an irrelevant picture with no corresponding sell line.
Front Cover This is my final Front Cover. As we can see we now have a consistent colour scheme of Blue, Red, and black. Also the font is very eye catching and looks smooth as well as cool. The font I used was called Arista which I had downloaded from the internet. This was a development as I did not know you could import fonts into photoshop. There is also a Image that has been cropped out with a shadow that has relevant sell lines linked to it. My masthead looks very attractive as I was able to manipulate it to have a outer shadow. The red box behind it compliments it well. On top of all this the background is white and simple which has also been adopted by many music magazines to keep focus on the main image. I also used direct address to create a immediate link between the audience and the artist. It is overall very simple which will appeal to my younger target audience.
Contents Page - Preliminary The things I think I did well in this contents page is that the layout is very simple and manageable, its very easy to find what you are looking for. Also the contents title looks good behind the purple rectangle shape. There is a good consistency of colours in the contents page also. The things I could have made better is making the contents page more exciting, at the moment it looks very boring and unattractive. In addition, I have another irrelevant picture below which has no relationship with anything on other pages. The quality of the image is poor and has been stretched too much. Also there is not testimonial from the editor
Contents Page The layout of my contents page is very simple but still looks professional. Articles on the right and corresponding images on the left. This makes the contents page look very organised. I have included an editors not at the top with a copy of the front page next to it. I have kept a consistent colour scheme which looks nice. More variety of images such as high end shot with a large number of props used to make them look stylish and sleek. I have implemented headers to separate my content to make the text look more manageable.
Double Page spread Although I had not created a double page spread for my preliminary task, we can see that my Photoshop skills have increased immensely. I employed a question and ask type article to fully get to grips with my artist. Unlike other RnB artists, my one was talking in formal language to make him stand out and to show that he is unlike any other RnB artist out there. Also I had my text wrapped around my artist. This makes the middle image look more outstanding and meaning full. The wrapped text shows how far my Photoshop abilities have gone. The use of floating quotes in my double page spread allows the reader to connect with the artist. I had chose my artist to be my background, giving more attention to the main image which makes it look simple.
Conclusion To conclude, through the use of colour, typography, puffs and cover lines I have been able to attract an audience to pick up my magazine. Through my research and planning, I was able to learn about key conventions required in a successful RnB magazines to communicate with the reader and I was able to apply it to my music magazine. I had learnt to use superlatives, floating quotes and direct address as techniques to be in touch with my audience. And finally, be able to influence text and images to create something I am proud of.
