Phytochemical investigation of all extracts was performed Petroleum ether
fraction gave positive results for cardiac glycosides, steroids, tannins, phenolic
compounds and flavonoids.
     Alcoholic fraction gave positive results for presence of carbohydrates,     and
tannins, flavonoids. Aqueous basic layer fraction also gave positive results for
alkaloids, mucilages and flavonoids. On the basis of these results it was found that
nearly all fractions were having phenols and tannins, important secondary
metabolite of plant reported to possess antioxidant potential.


      Further DPPH assay of all extracts were performed. Petroleum ether fraction
showed IC-50 57.62 µg/ml. Ethanol fraction showed IC-50 38.37 g/ml.
      H2O2 assay of petroleum ether and alcoholic extract showed IC-50 55.27 and
85.27 µg/ml respectively.
      OH-ion assay of petroleum ether and alcoholic extract showed IC-50 203.85
and 202.79 µg/ml respectively.


      Thus antioxidant assay revealed that the -------------------fraction was having
best antioxidant activity and thus on the basis of this, it was decided that
hepatoprotective activity of this fraction will be assessed.
