A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted, causing brain cells to be damaged or die. This document provides an overview of a stroke awareness training course, which aims to teach candidates about stroke symptoms, types, risk factor management, emergency response, and post-stroke management and support. The goals are to help people understand what a stroke is, recognize the signs of a stroke, and know how to appropriately respond in the event of a stroke.

The stroke awareness training course is aimed at anyone
currently or seeking to work within the health care sector.
Candidates will benefit from having knowledge of symptoms,
treatments and side effects.

3. Definition
 A stroke is an injury caused by a change in the blood
supply to the brain. Blood supplies a constant source of
oxygen to the brain. Without oxygen, brain cells are
damaged and will eventually die. The brain controls all of
our body’s functions therefore if the brain is damaged, our
body’s functions will be affected.

 Provide an understanding of different types of Stroke.
Signs, symptoms and effect on the person.
 Promote appropriate responses in the event of a Stroke
and positive management and support following a Stroke

A stroke occurs when blood flow is interrupted to part of the
brain. Without blood to supply oxygen and nutrients and to r
emove wasteproducts, brain cells quickly begin to die. Depe
nding on the region of the brain affected, a stroke may caus
e paralysis, speechimpairment, loss of memory and reasonin
g ability, coma, or death. A stroke also is sometimes called a
brain attack or a cerebrovascularaccident (CVA).
