4. INTRODUCTION
Newton studied Galileo’s ideas on
force and motion and presented three
fundamental laws that govern the motion
of objects. These three laws are known
as Newton’s laws of motion. In this we
are going to learn about the Newton’s
first law of motion.
5. “ The tendency of a objects to remain at rest or in
a state of uniform motion when no forces act on
them is called Inertia”
This is described in Newton’s first law of
motion. Newton’s first law of motion is also
called as ‘Law of Inertia’.
6. For example,
When the pawns in a carrom board game are arranged vertically &
the bottom pawn is hit by the striker the pawn at the bottom gets removed
and the vertical arrangements of the pawns intact.
7. Newton’s first law of motion
Newton’s first law of motion stated as,
“Everybody continuous in its state of rest or of uniform
motion in a straight line, unless it is compelled by an external
force acts upon it.”
In other words, the tendency of undisturbed objects to
stay at rest or keep moving with the same velocity. This is
why the first law of motion is known as the ‘law of inertia’
The resistance to change the state of motion depends upon
the mass of the objects.
8. EXAMPLE,
While travelling in a bus you might have experienced that when
brakes are suddenly applied , you lean forward. When the bus
starts moving you lean backward.
9. To accelerate an object, an external unbalanced force is
necessary. That means, to change the state of rest or state of
motion of an object, an unbalanced force must act on it.
