In the current state, most of the world is using fossil fuels, which are nonrenewable sources. Fossil
fuels are cheap and limited. They will soon be depleted. The world needs to find a source of energy
that is not only renewable but sustainable. Sustainable Energy is usually associated with renewable
energy. This is because renewable energy is a continuous source. However, the sustainability of each
of different types of renewable energy vary. Sustainable energy means that amount of energy that is
used, is also generated. The idea of sustainability means essentially that overall the plant or building
is net zero. A net zero building would greatly prolong further damage to the Earth. According to

Current trends of making houses sustainable and use zero–net energy will take time and research to
be implemented most effectively and used on a large scale, but it is the drastic change that is needed
to solve the issue. There are many different combinations and approaches to a sustainable zero
energy building. In order to describe the current trends I will look at two different buildings, the
ZOE building located at Discovery Park and America's most efficient home built in Salt Lake City,

Even with so many advantages, there are also drawbacks that must be considered before committing
to solar energy. An obvious setback to solar panels is the unpredictability of the sun. This is why it is
critical that the location of the panels allows them to get the maximum amount of sunlight possible
during the day. Places that are closest to the equator have an advantage compared to those further
away. This is because the equator receives large amounts of solar radiation during the year due to its
low latitudes (Shahan, 2015).
One could argue that it does not matter that solar energy from the sun is not provided during the day.
This is because humans use more energy during the day than the night. Since humans follow the
cycle of the sun, we are awake when it is light outside and asleep when it is dark. At night, we do
not need to use electric power to light various rooms in the house or use appliances. Therefore we
are not using much energy and do not need solar panels to be converting solar energy into electricity

Even though solar panels costs are going down, they are still a huge initial expense for the
consumer. In fact, it would take thousands of dollars to set up solar energy in a home, and many are

While so, housing alone takes up major portion of total energy usage. According to United States'
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it accounted for 38.9 percent of total U.S. energy
consumption in 2005. In year 2006 it took 72 percent of total U.S. electricity consumption and this
number will rise to 75% by 2025. So it can be seen how change in managing housings can lead to
positive changes (EPA).
Green building technology tackles against these problems with many different technologies,

Firstly, it has been said that the heating and cooling process of a household heavily uses electricity

Out of the total energy consumption in an average household, 50% goes to space heating, 27% to
run appliances, 19% to heat water and 4% goes to air conditioning.

It has been stated in the past that there is not a significant difference between the price of green and
non–green products and materials. Therefore, there is no significant difference between the price of
normal homes and zero carbon homes. It is believed that green buildings are considered to be
expensive as usually all kind of new modern building methods tend to be more expensive, according
to my questionnaire this is also true. I noticed that 60% of the people I interviewed thought that zero
carbon homes were to be ridiculously expensive. However, it would be beneficial to have a zero
carbon home as the increased initial costs offset the decreased operating costs. This is the reason so
many people prefer to have zero carbon homes, as there energy bills will be lower then before. In
2003, The Californian Sustainable Building Task Force carried out a study and according to this
study 20% of investment into green building will elaborate 10 times more saving. Meaning there is
no significant difference in prices, so a zero carbon building can be just as expensive as a
conventional building. It is evident that after this study was carried out the United Kingdom also

The U.S. military has a goal to achieve 25 percent renewable energy by the year 2025. Fort Drum,
