Short Essay About Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was an African American woman born into slavery. She started working for a
woman, watching a baby as it slept, so the mother didn't have too. It was one of the better jobs for a
slave, but at the age of 6, it was a very difficult task. She grew up, taking on more difficult jobs and
"living a tragic life as a slave", quoted by Sara Kettler. She didn't like it, and soon she wouldn't have
to do it anymore. This will explain how Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom and helped many others
to do so also.
Many people that knew Tubman, knew she was always very motivational and confident. She did get
scared and tired though, but she never let it take over her confidence. She was strong because she
needed to be to achieve her goal and get through the life of a slave. She was very generous and
helping because she risked her life multiple times to save ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

She did this by being very secretive and making sure nobody backed out so she wouldn't get caught.
She never once failed to deliver a single slave to safety. A quote about it from her is, "On my
underground railroad I never run my train off the track and I never lost a passenger." Many people
only know Harriet Tubman for the underground railroad, but she also served as a spy during the
civil war for the union army. She was inspired to be a spy because, when guiding the underground
railroad, she had to set up meetings and arrange routes without drawing any attention to herself,
which are great skills for spy work, according to Becky Little, the author of Harriet the Spy. In the
spring of 1862 she traveled to a union camp in South Carolina to help former slaves but she also
intended to be a spy. She started off as a nurse for the soldiers but ended up mapping territory and
waterways which led to her becoming a

Harriet Tubman's Role In The Civil War
April 12, 1861 was a day that played a crucial part to what the United States is today. This was the
first day that the Civil War broke out, the Battle of Bull Run, and from then on it was history. Many
citizens played part in to making this war right, although the Union had a big advantage, so did the
Confederacy. This was the first time that women were going to have the opportunity to play a big
role in United States history. Women played a huge role in the Civil War. If it weren't for many
women who gave their lives and dedication to this war, this war's results would have turned out to
be really different, and the crucial part to this were the accomplishments of Woman Spies. The first
woman spy to make a big impact to the Civil War goes by the name of Rose O'Neal Greenhow. This
woman was born in Maryland, as a woman from the south she was offered to join the Confederate
spy agency by Captain Thomas Jordan. Being from the south, she took the offer, she felt that this
was her chance to be able to get back at the slave who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ms. Tubman is more known as the woman to help free many enslaved African Americans, but in
reality that is not all she accomplished in her life. Harriet Tubman was actually a very big key to the
Union; she created a big network of spies. This network was formed by many African Americans
who volunteered to be slaves to help the Union. This network helped create a better Union army,
now that they were able to "gather Military intelligence" (History.com Staff). Another thing Harriet
Tubman is less known for is leading armed men to cut off the Confederacy's supply line; in addition
she also freed over 700 slaves. After the war was over, Ms. Tubman was compensated $200,
although this was very little money she continued to sell pies, gingerbread, etc. to make a living.
Harriet Tubman was offered more money for her service of being a spy, but she initially rejected the

Harriet Tubman An Abolitionist
Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States
Army during the American Civil War. She was born into slavery in Maryland. Harriet and her
family worked for Edward Brodas,a slaveholder known for his cruelty. She would work in the fields
for extremely long hours. When Harriet became older she would ask other slaves to teach her about
the forests around the plantation. It was then she learned about the underground railroad. She set off
alone on the 90 mile journey to the North. When she was free she decided to help other slaves get
the freedom they deserved. Harriet served in the Union Army as a spy, scout, and a nurse. She also
turned her home into a shelter for other slaves. All in all Tubman

What Was Harriet Tubman's Greatest Achievement?
What do you think Harriet Tubman's greatest achievement is? Well, Harriet was a remarkable
woman, so there are multiple options to choose from. Born as Araminta Ross, Harriet was always a
really tough, hard working girl. At 5 years old, she was already doing child–care. At 12 years old,
she was doing hard field work. At a young age, she constantly lived with the fear of being seperated
from her family, which eventually happened when she lost a couple of her sisters. One day in 1849,
her master died, and she made the brave choice to escape. With courage, will, and grit, she earned
her freedom. After becoming free, what Tubman did in her life is what represented great
achievements. She was a Civil War Nurse, a Civil War Spy, a Caregiver, and a Conductor. I believe
out of those accomplishments the greatest one was her being a Conductor. ... Show more content on

After the Civil War ended, Tubman helped a variety of different people, including deserted babies,
old people, and the disabled. She spent the last 48 years of her life helping about 6 to 8 people in her
care. In Document E, it states that during the 48 years of Harriet's life after the Civil War, "much of
Harriet Tubman's time was spent taking care of poor people in her home." A great accomplishment
has a couple aspects to it. One, for example, is time devoted. Harriet Tubman being a caregiver
proves to be a great accomplishment as 48 years spent is an abundant amount of time devoted

Harriet Tubman During The Civil War
Harriet Tubman stated, "I would fight for my liberty so long as my strength lasted, and if the time
came for me to go, the Lord would let them take me" (Brainy Quote, 2015). In the face of adversity,
Harriet Tubman led hundreds of slaves to freedom from the South before the start of the Civil War.
She was a fierce supporter of freedom. "Once the war began, Tubman served as a Union spy"(. She
was the only woman known to have led a military operation during the American Civil War.
Tubman spent her life placing the needs of others before herself. While the country was in the midst
of war, she remained focused and steadfast in her duty. During the American Civil War, several

Black People Were The Victims Of Many Tragedies Essay
For centuries, black people were the victims of many tragedies in American history. One of the most
memorable misfortunes that this racial group faced was during the times of slavery. Slavery is the
practice of labelling human beings as property so they have restricted liberty and are forced into
working hard labor for the owners. Many blacks were forced or born into slavery, where they have
been deprived of their power and suffered from long hours of work and physical attacks from their
owners. Even though this race had been put down consistently, it did not stop certain blacks from
rising up to fight the unjustified system. Born in 1822 in Dorchester County, Maryland, Harriet
Tubman grew up to be one of the most memorable historical figures in the nation. In her early life,
she was the daughter of enslaved parents and forced to work on the plantations. However, Tubman
eventually escaped to her freedom in 1849. Even though she ran away from her life as a slave, she
came back as leading abolitionist. Tubman's actions contributed to the freedom of the slaves.
Tubman was a symbol of bravery and independence to many slaves. Throughout her early life,
Tubman faced the many common hardships of slavery, being severely abused by her owner and his
family. She was inflicted several permanent scars and physical injuries from the beatings and lashes
she received growing up. One of her most painful injuries was given as punishment when she did
not halt a runaway slave. Because of her

Harriet Tubman Who Was The Greatest Dbq
Harriet Tubman had many achievements, but which was the greatest? Harriet lived in Dorchester
County, Maryland. Sadly Harriet Tubman was involved in slavery at a very young age. As years
passed, she got older and her master had died, therefore she ran away to be free. From here Harriet
rescued other slaves. Most importantly how do you define greatest. Greatest is when you take time,
risk, and the number of people helped to see how strong your achievement was. Harriet Tubman
achieved many things in her life such as being a nurse, spy, and a caregiver, but Harriett's greatest
achievement was the underground railroad. One of Harriet Tubman's achievements was being a
nurse for the wounded survivors of the Massachusetts 54th regiment during the day, but at night she
baked pies. As a nurse she would thrash away flies and bathe wounds(Doc D). In the time of being a
nurse Harriet spent four years doing labor(Doc D). This shows Harriet did not spend that much time
doing labor compared to her other achievements. This is important because this will show the
amount of time she spent on this achievement. Also, Harriet only helped 3 to 4 men a day(Doc D).
This shows she did not help many men. This is important because many men could be hurt but by
the end of the day she would only have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While she was a spy she sang and saved 800 people in one day(DocC). This shows that she saved
many people in one day. This is important because she saved many people in one day, but this does
not mean it's his greatest. Also, this shows it was only one day so this obviously was not her greatest
because in order for it it to be the greatest there must be a lot of time put in. This is important
because this shows that there was not an awful lot of time put in. Furthermore, there was some what
of a risk involved which is that she could have got caught while being spy. This is important because
this truthfully was not her biggest

Harriet Tubman Hero
Catherine Clinton wrote an extraordinary biography named "Harriet Tubman: The Road to
Freedom". The biography showed how Tubman is a heroic character, who had done many
remarkable things during her lifetime. Her living standards were harsh while growing up, yet she
was still able to carry out success. Therefore, she is known to be hardworking to the point where she
is also stubborn towards labor. After she worked as a U.G.R.R. agent she became a nurse, spy and a
scout to help her country with the civil war, and was is important. However, She also risked her life
for her fellow African–Americans who have been restricted from their freedom and enslaved to
wealthy caucasians, this would be the most important job in her career. In the past, the present and
hopefully the future Harriet Tubman is a hero and a role model to humanity. During Harriet

After she worked as a U.G.R.R. agent she was employed to be nurse during the civil war. Stated in a

in the hospital and helped the injured soldiers, as a nurse and a cook. During the civil war she wasn't
always a nurse. Since she knew the land so well, because she was a U.R.G.G. agent, she was
employed as a spy. General Saxton said he was a witness to the values of Harriet's services. He also
claims, " she was employed...as a spy...she made many raids in the enemy's lines displaying
remarkable courage, zeal, and fidelity." (Clinton 142). She became the only woman, at the time, to
officially lead men into battle, as a scout and a spy while serving the union army in South Carolina.

Harriet The Spy Louise Fitzhugh
Question 1: Harriet the Spy In her text Harriet the Spy Louise Fitzhugh treats tropes of the public
self and the private self –the secretive part of the self– in and throughout Harriet's status/occupation
as a gender queer spy. Harriet –as a gender queer spy– is utilized by Fitzhugh as a grounds for
negotiating the supple separation between societal expectations of the public self, and the
private/secretive realities of that very self. Consider, for example, Mrs. Gibbs' assertion that Janie
and Harriet "need a few graces" especially as they are becoming "young women" (Fitzhugh 80).
Harriet then defensively introjects– after Mrs. Gibbs further asserts that Harriet's mother Mrs.
Welsch "worried about the way [Harriet] moved"– and defensively states that she moves "fast"
(Fitzhugh 80). Ole Golly eventually intervenes and tells Harriet her that "girl spies" need ... Show

Indeed, the first time Harriet spies on the club, Harriet comments on the unsettlement she feels at
having heard herself being referred to as a 'she' by her class mates (Fitzhugh 200). The indication,
therefore, is that Harriet is still very much and will always be an Other –a she– in relation to this
club; a club that seems to function much like heteronormativity, especially when/if someone is
outed. Harriet is also an Other as she unlike Rachel, Laura, and Carrie –the most feminized
characters of this work– and much like Sport, Pinky, and Janie –the most masculinized/queer
characters– detests the thought of bridge. Hence, we witness here a parallelism being drawn
between Harriet and the masculinized/queer, that functions not only in relation to Harriet's spying –
and her outing as a spy– but also functions in relation to the queerness/masculinization of these

Not like any normal white child being born that time period, Harriet Tubman was raised in very
devastating brutal living conditions. From a very young age she was whipped and mistreated by her
owner Edward Brodas. If she did not meet up to the standards of her owner, they had no sympathy.
Her younger years until she reached the age of twelve was when she was beaten and whipped for
lack of work or the satisfaction of the people her master put her to work for. Furthermore, once she
turned twelve she no longer was using the name her parents gave to her at birth but instead her
mother's name Harriet. At a very young age when she was put to work in the plantations, Harriet
Tubman needed to use a lot of physical strength, it is where she developed her endurance and
stamina. Working countless of hours a day as a slave made her eager for a better life, something
different. Furthermore, still being very young, Harriet witnessed an escape from one of the slaves.
However the attempt was a fail. Harriet Tubman was instructed to tie up the slave, in which she
failed to do it properly. As a result the slave escaped and succeeded. Harriet was held responsible

Harriet The Spy Movie Vs Book
In Harriet the Spy novel, Harriet's actions and ways can allow readers to think that she is suffering
from autism. For example, Harriet dresses very practical, is unable to change her strict routine even
when circumstances require it, doesn't understand why people act the way they act, and interprets
things literally. It is true that the movie has some of these traits for Harriet, like the literal
interpretation of the "Harriet smells" note, but the movie doesn't focus on them enough for us to
interpret Harriet as we do in the book. Updated to the multi–cultural 90s, the movie transforms
Harriet from a tomboy into a button–cute girl. Harriet's observations no longer have the sting of
particularity as in the book. In the movie, she is just a sharp kid scribbling down judgments that she
sees. For example, in the movie she wrote "boy with ringlets and tattoos". In the book, she writes
what she thinks of people's life based on their physical appearances: "I bet ... Show more content on

The only difference is they don't express those thoughts, publicly. An example for that is that the
movie changed Harriet's note about Sport from "Sometimes he's like a little old woman" (Fitzhugh
166) to "Sport is so poor, he can't even afford food. Why can't his father just get a real job?" It is
true that Sport is poor, and some of his other classmates may be thinking that too. The only
difference is that Harriet wrote it down. The reason for Harriet's transformation from tomboyish in
the book may be that gender differences are explored only tentatively in movies, particularly those
aimed at children. It is perhaps already daring enough for the film industry to show an 11–year–old
girl who is smart, creative, and adventurous: to make her a tomboy would push her over the edge of

Harriet Tubman is well known for a successful role in freeing many slaves through the Underground

the Civil War. Her bravery while helping slaves escape through the Underground Railroad and her
assistance in gathering Confederate troops intelligence as a spy changed the history and made a
great impact on the on the United States National Defense. Even though Harriet Tubman was a very

two brothers, Ben and Harry, left Maryland. After seeing runaway notice offering $300, Ben and
Harry had reconsiderations and returned to the plantation. Tubman, with her strong will, continued
to escape nearly 90 miles to Philadelphia for her freedom using the secret network known as the
Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was neither a rail road nor underground. The
routes taken at night to were called "lines" and at places they stopped to rest were called "stationed".
"Conductors" such as Harriet Tubman and Quaker Thomas used their knowledge and luck to
securely free slaves from slave states to the Free states. (Biography, 2017) As she cross the state line

Themes Of Feminism In Harriet The Spy
It is often questioned whether tween literature is too mature for its targeted age group. With themes
of murder, sexual abuse, neglect, and other forms of violence, both physical and psychological,
there seems to be one topic that is slightly more prevalent when speaking about tween literature.
Tween literature and culture is often marketed towards young girls and their parents, because of this,
it becomes easy to talk about themes of feminism in tween literature. More specifically, due to the
time period in which tween culture became mainstream, postfeminism is a topic that is often heavily
discussed around tween literature. Both Gail Levine's novel, Ella Enchanted, as well as Louise
Fitzhugh's novel Harriet the Spy, can both be analyzed using a postfeminist lense. By using a
postfeminist lense in analyzing these books, the issues of postfeminism become apparent when
addressing issues such as a false sense of choice for young girls, an idea that they must be ashamed
for who they are and the views that they hold. It is further complicated when it becomes apparent
that due to postfeminist ideology, women, and specifically young girls have lost the ability to
articulate sexism when it affects them. Through these points of contention regarding postfeminism,
it becomes aparent that society is not quite ready to hold postfeminist views, since there is still an
imbalance of power that women face on a day to day basis. It is important to have a baseline
understanding of what

The Greatest Consummation Of Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman started off as a lowly thrall, but died a remarkable hero. Harriet Tubman wasn't her
real name, her birth name was Minty Ross. It was important for her to change her name because she
was an escaped thrall trying to help other thralls gain their freedom. So she needed a new identity.
Harriet was around twenty–seven when she escaped vassalage. Harriet joined a secret network
known as the Underground Railroad to unrestrained thralls. Soon after Harriet became a spy for the
Civil War, from there she became a Civil War wellness solicitude craftswoman. After the war, she
was a caregiver for the rest of her life. I was asked to define Harriet Tubman's greatest
consummation. I will also rank her consummations by the amount of risk, the amount of people she
helped, and the amount of time the consummation took. My definition of greatest consummation
means a skill or effort given with an interest above average. Harriet Tubman's life is full of many
accomplishments. Here, I have rated them from the most important. In my personal point of view,
her greatest consummation was being a Civil War spy, her second greatest consummation was being
a conductor on the Underground Railroad and lastly, her third greatest consummation was being a
Civil War wellness solicitude craftswoman and caregiver.
Harriet Tubman's most important consummation was being a Civil War spy. Harriet Tubman helped
many people as a spy, without her work helping thralls, it would have been very hard.

Have you ever heard of the Underground Railroad and its most famous conductor? Well if you have
not then man do I have a story for you. Harriet Tubman was a slave in the 1800's who saved herself
as well as 300+ other slaves using the route of the Underground Railroad. The Underground
Railroad was a route of houses that slaves used to get to the north. Harriet changed the lives of many
slaves forever. Harriet Tubman was born in Dorchester County, Maryland in 1820. She was born on
the plantation where her parents Harriet Greene and Ben Ross got hired to work the fields. She lived
there with her family and her eight siblings Linah, Mariah Ritty, Moses, Ben, Robert, Henry,
Rachel, and Soph Ross until she was five. That's when she started working. She worked for the
slave owners from there on out. That was her life. In her early life Harriet had two different types of
pets. She had crickets and bunnies, but I don't know how many. She had her first job at age five
caring for an infant. She was given the first of her many nicknames Minty after her birth name
Araminta Ross. She got another job at age seven collecting muskrats from traps. She described ...

Araminta Ross in 1822 in Dorchester, Maryland. She was born a slave and would be, until she ran
away in 1849. After she ran away she did many great deeds, but how do you define greatness. Based
off the length of time, risk, and number of people helped, there is a clear outline for greatness.
Harriet Tubman had many great achievements throughout her life. She was a spy, a nurse, and a
caregiver. However her greatest achievement was working in the Underground Railroad.
One of the many achievements of Harriet Tubman is her work as a spy during the Civil War. "There
she headed up a team of eight black spies to operate behind the lines and provide intelligence for a
Union raid of free slaves...I kept on singing until we brought all aboard. We got 800 people that day,
and we tore up the railroad and fired the bridge..." (Doc. C) Harriet Tubman went over enemy line
to help prepare for a raid that only lasted one day. Compared to her other achievements, that isn't a
long time. However, in one day they were able to save around 800 people. Her job in the raid was to
sing to the fleeing slaves in order to calm them down. The risk level for this act is a seven out of ten
because it 's dangerous to cross enemy lines, but all she did was sing. However, the risk level for
this feat is about the same

Harriet Tubman started off as a lowly slave, but died a remarkable hero. Harriet Tubman wasn't her
real name, her birth name was Minty Ross. It was important for her to change her name because she
was an escaped slave trying to help other slaves gain their freedom. So she needed a new identity.
Harriet was around twenty–seven when she escaped slavery. Harriet joined a secret network known
as the Underground Railroad to free slaves. Soon after Harriet became a spy for the Civil War, from
there she became a Civil War nurse. After the war, she was a caregiver for the rest of her life. I was
asked to define Harriet Tubman's greatest achievement. I will also rank her achievements by the
amount of risk, the amount of people she helped, and the amount of time the achievement took. My
definition of greatest achievement means a skill or effort given with an interest above average.
Harriet Tubman's life is full of many accomplishments. Here, I have rated them from the most
important. In my personal point of view, her greatest achievement was being a Civil War spy, her
second greatest achievement was being a conductor on the Underground Railroad and lastly, her
third greatest achievement was being a Civil War nurse and caregiver. Harriet Tubman's most
important achievement was being a Civil War spy. Harriet Tubman helped many people as a spy,
without her work helping slaves, it would have been very hard. The reason for this being her
greatest achievement was because Tubman was

Women's Role In The Civil War
What's Your Role?
"In Analysis: the Role of Women During the Civil War"
Laurel Thatcher Ulrich once uttered, "Well–behaved women seldom make history." Laurel was a
professor at Harvard University and an author. This is very crucial during The American Civil War.
The
Civil War lasted from 1861–1865. It has been said that this is the bloodiest war out of all the other
wars.
The war was against the Union and the Confederate armies. The Union is the North and the
Confederates were the South. The war started because of uncompromising differences between the
free states (north) and the slave states (south) over the power of the national government to prohibit
slavery (Stauffer). The war officially commenced at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. The ... Show

There are four hundred documented cases of women fighting in the war (Women and the American
Civil War). There were more women that dressed up they just weren't caught. Women were not
allowed to fight in the Civil War. At this time there were only able to be nurses. That evidently didn't
stop the women from enlisting. The women who tried to enlist were kicked out. Women would chop
off their hair and trade their dresses in for guns so that they could fight for what they believed was
best for our country. People were very judgmental about the women were willing to enlist before
they disguised themselves. The men and other women thought that those girls were mentally
unbalanced or prostitutes. Some would say that those women had unadulterated patriotism (Dillard).
These women were often seen as outcasts in society where men and women had completely
different responsibilities. Women in the nineteenth century filled a specific role in society and it

The Importance Of Harriet Tubman 's The Tubman
THE IMPORTANCE OF HARRIET TUBMAN By: Chelciee McDowell Harriet Tubman Harriet
Tubman was an African American bondwomen who escaped slavery in the south. Harriet Tubman
became famous as a "conductor" on the Underground Railroad during the turbulent 1850s. Tubman
was born a slave, she worked in the field ever since she was old enough to walk. She also endured
brutal beatings. She couldn't deal with the horrible life style she lived any longer. Tubman decided
that it was time for a change. Though she was a slave, she was smart enough to come up with a
master plan to get away from it all and take her people with her. In 1849 she fled slavery, leaving
her husband and family behind in order to escape. Despite a bounty on her head, she returned to the
South at least 19 times to lead her family and hundreds of other slaves to freedom using the
Underground Railroad. Slaves suffered and weren't treated fairly. Every slave wanted to be free and
many attempted to escape but Harriet was the only one who didn't get captured. "She was one of
very few women whose escape from slavery was widely publicized in her own time among
antislavery activists, and was virtually the only women celebrated as a guide for fleeing fugitives."
(Humez 5) Harriet's bravery is what freed many slaves and also gave many slaves hope that they
would see better days. She led her people to a new world where slavery was abolished. Harriet

Harriet Tubman's Role In The Civil War
In 1850, division between the north and south became even deeper which ultimately lead to the
Civil War. Middle class whites sympathized for slaves and majority of abolitionists outlawed the
institution of slavery. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the President and right after, South
Carolina passed the Ordinance of Secession. Tubman was a support of President Abraham Lincoln.
Subsequently, other southern states joined South Carolina and formed the Confederate States of
America. As north and the south could not come to an agreement on the issue of slavery, the Civil

Queer Theory In Harriet Fitzhugh's Harriet The Spy
Many readers today do not know that Harriet the Spy was first published nearly fifty years ago. The
spellbinding, brutally honest passages of 11–year–old Harriet make children everywhere devoted to
this novel. Fitzhugh taps into the mind of a young female and brilliantly captures her thoughts and
experiences. "Harriet the Spy is not a message book. It is first and foremost an experience. On the
primary level we are immersed in Harriet and, by means of her, her world" (Wolf 125). Through
Harriet's experiences, readers are given the opportunity to see a child learning how to adapt to the
world around her. There are many different critical approaches that can be used to interpret Harriet
the Spy; but the most intriguing theory, is queer theory. At the time of publication, Harriet was a
phenomenon for her time period. She was brash, defiant, and different. Queer theory attempts to
make sense of abnormalities within a text. So therefore we must ask, in what ways does Harriet the
Spy translate into a queer novel, and how does Fitzhugh queer events within the book to make it
even more unique? Harriet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While queer theory does examine homosexual subtexts, it also brings forth questions from the text
concerning gender roles, sexual norms, identity, and deviance from societal conventions. Dr.
Deborah Carlin, a professor at the University of Massachusetts, states, "The term "queer" is
frequently misunderstood to function as either a noun or as an identity category; however, it should
be more accurately be deployed as a verb (to queer), one that signifies action rather than
individuals" (56). Within Harriet the Spy, there are several areas of queering that can be explored,
these include: homosexuality and queer subtext, psychoanalytical sexuality, cultural patterns, gender
queerness, and age

The second contribution of Harriet Tubman is that she was a conductor in the Underground
Railroad, a network of antislavery activists who helped slaves escape from the south. On her first
trip in 1850, Tubman bought her sister and her sister's two children out of slavery in Maryland. In
1851, she helped her brother out of slavery, and in 1857 she returned to Maryland to guide her old
parents back to freedom. Overall Tubman made about nineteen trips to the south and guided about
three hundred slaves to freedom. But during those travels Tubman faced great danger in order not to
get caught she would use disguises and carries a sleeping powder to stop babies from crying and
also always carried a pistol in case one of the people back out once the journey has begun(

Even though, Tubman discontinued making trips to the south and also discontinued working in the
union army she was still helping guarantee rights for blacks. After returning to Auburn, New York
she married Nelson Davis and lived in a home on South Street. After settling down there, Tubman
helped Auburn to remain a center of support of women rights. She also built as wooden structure

After a skirmish, she hesitated to capture the slave and forced her master to throw a lead weight
towards the slave, but instead hit Harriet causing her to have a dent in her head for the rest of her
life causing her to have epilepsy. Harriet Tubman escaped slavery with the aid of many anti–slavery
abolitionists who hoarded her from house to house finally leading her to Philadelphia. As a free
woman, she made frequent trips back to Maryland in order to guide slaves up north toward freedom.
Harriet was so well known that she earned the nickname "Moses" after Moses from the bible who
also freed slaves (63). She continued saving slaves even after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 making
Harriet flee to Canada for safety, now instead of leading slaves toward the north, she led them
towards Canada. During the civil war she was called upon by the union to be a spy aiding the union
with valuable information that won many battles and freed many slaves from the south. After the
civil war, Harriet spent her elder says fighting for women's rights in the United States. What
impressed me the most about Harriet Tubman is that she decided to help other slaves gain freedom
even after she gained hers. She could've easily lived a quiet life in Philadelphia avoiding the public

Harriet Tubman Greatest Achievements
What Was Harriet Tubman's Greatest Achievement?
" I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery." Thomas Jefferson once said. Harriet Tubman
was a strong and brave African – American woman. She was born in Dorchester County, Maryland.
She grew up in Bucktown, Maryland. She grew up like "a neglected weeds" (Background Essay). It
showed that her childhood is not very lovely. At the age of 12, she was doing field work and hauling

freedom but if she does not get freedom then she would get death. Although Harriet Tubman's
achievements as a caregiver in Upstate New York and being a spy leader of the Combahee River
raid were important, but her achievement of being a conductor of the Underground Railroad was the
greatest. One of Harriet Tubman's noteworthy achievements was her work as a caregiver in Upstate
New York. She cared for the needy people, " The aged, ... the babe deserted, the epileptic, the blind,
the paralyzed, ... all found shelter and welcome." (Doc E). This showed that she cared and
welcomed all kinds of people. "Much of Harriet Tubman's time spent taking care of the poor people

Harriet Tubman Contribution
The 19th century was a time when the first big steps toward abolition and women's rights were
taken in the United States. These particular steps began with the Second Great Awakening. Since the
Second Great Awakening was a religious movement, its main goal was to encourage ethical
behavior. These encouragements lead to the increase of the belief of equality among people.
Although many people opposed the idea of equality, those who did support the idea continued to
strive toward achieving their goal: the establishment of equality in society and law. An individual
who put forth an immense amount of effort to achieve these goals was Harriet Tubman. Harriet

As a nurse, she made a remedy she had learned while she lived in Maryland which helped save a

wondered, she would encounter many people who were still enslaved. The slaves she encountered
"willingly provided a wealth of information concerning troop placements and supply lines" (Harriet

Colonel James Montgomery "in an assault on several plantations along the Combahee River"
(Harriet Tubman: Underground Railroad "Conductor", Nurse, Spy). During this mission, she helped
over seven–hundred people gain their freedom. Harriet Tubman's assistance during the Civil War
contributed to the victory of the Union and resulted in the abolishment of slavery. Although the

What were the greatest achievements of Harriet Tubman? Many may think it's just helping people
escape slavery by the underground railroad, but she did more than that. The greatest achievements
of Harriet Tubman were the underground railroad, being a spy, and a caregiver. In 1822 a little girl
named Araminta Rose was born into slavery. Years passed when she started to do work everyday,

know about her and the underground railroad. She did more than just help slaves she saved lives.
She also learned how to take of herself when she was not paid and still tired from working all day.

Harriet The Spy: Music Analysis
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things: Of shoes––and ships––and sealing–
wax––Of cabbages––and kings–– And why the sea is boiling hot––And whether pigs have wings."
The first time I heard these lines I was watching one of my favorite films Harriet the Spy, as a fifth
grader. It has been one of those whispering winds in the back of my mind and until recently I could
not put it into perspective what it meant as a literary juxtapose and as my personal interpretation. To
the perusing eye this may seem like playful banter leaving the lips of an aquatic murmurer in hopes
of distracting his prey into submission, however, I internalize this warm folly as a call to action of
inevitable fate. It has been said that Lewis Carroll ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Music will never be obsolete, the medium may diminish but the music will remain. These pivotal
issues are where we as individuals who become formally educated in the industry work to keep it
afloat. These issues range from artists not receiving or earning very little royalty payments, artists
and musicians having a harder time becoming mainstream due to the ease of access to technology,
cancelled concerts because of low ticket sales, and rising ticket prices and inflation from resellers;
The list is vast. The key to researching one of these fascinating topics is first identifying my goal for
the research. In finding a topic that I believe progresses the industry I need to present a diligent case
study that I nurtured. At first, I thought about building a new module to the form new standards for
RIAA Certifications but then I realized that Adele has sold over 7 million copies of "25" and is
currently number one on Billboard. This is the follow up album to "21" that never left the charts
before her next album was released. I also recalled a night of watching a jaw–dropping episode of
Scandal only to have Beyoncé unhinge what was left of my mandible when she released "Beyoncé"
out the clear digital skies. It appealed to me because I can recall as a middle schooler anticipating
first week sales of my favorite artists. I am not sure if that was normal 11 year old behavior but I
will own it! We can agree that most of these artists possess a unique spark that allows them to
prevail against the negative elements, so researching their creative footprint would not necessarily
benefit upcoming artists as having a niche of their own is key. In my navigation through technology
and my observations of the industry I have noticed a general upset when it comes to award shows as
it pertains to nominees and

Short Essay About Harriet Tubman

  • 1. Short Essay About Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman was an African American woman born into slavery. She started working for a woman, watching a baby as it slept, so the mother didn't have too. It was one of the better jobs for a slave, but at the age of 6, it was a very difficult task. She grew up, taking on more difficult jobs and "living a tragic life as a slave", quoted by Sara Kettler. She didn't like it, and soon she wouldn't have to do it anymore. This will explain how Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom and helped many others to do so also. Many people that knew Tubman, knew she was always very motivational and confident. She did get scared and tired though, but she never let it take over her confidence. She was strong because she needed to be to achieve her goal and get through the life of a slave. She was very generous and helping because she risked her life multiple times to save ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She did this by being very secretive and making sure nobody backed out so she wouldn't get caught. She never once failed to deliver a single slave to safety. A quote about it from her is, "On my underground railroad I never run my train off the track and I never lost a passenger." Many people only know Harriet Tubman for the underground railroad, but she also served as a spy during the civil war for the union army. She was inspired to be a spy because, when guiding the underground railroad, she had to set up meetings and arrange routes without drawing any attention to herself, which are great skills for spy work, according to Becky Little, the author of Harriet the Spy. In the spring of 1862 she traveled to a union camp in South Carolina to help former slaves but she also intended to be a spy. She started off as a nurse for the soldiers but ended up mapping territory and waterways which led to her becoming a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Harriet Tubman's Role In The Civil War April 12, 1861 was a day that played a crucial part to what the United States is today. This was the first day that the Civil War broke out, the Battle of Bull Run, and from then on it was history. Many citizens played part in to making this war right, although the Union had a big advantage, so did the Confederacy. This was the first time that women were going to have the opportunity to play a big role in United States history. Women played a huge role in the Civil War. If it weren't for many women who gave their lives and dedication to this war, this war's results would have turned out to be really different, and the crucial part to this were the accomplishments of Woman Spies. The first woman spy to make a big impact to the Civil War goes by the name of Rose O'Neal Greenhow. This woman was born in Maryland, as a woman from the south she was offered to join the Confederate spy agency by Captain Thomas Jordan. Being from the south, she took the offer, she felt that this was her chance to be able to get back at the slave who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ms. Tubman is more known as the woman to help free many enslaved African Americans, but in reality that is not all she accomplished in her life. Harriet Tubman was actually a very big key to the Union; she created a big network of spies. This network was formed by many African Americans who volunteered to be slaves to help the Union. This network helped create a better Union army, now that they were able to "gather Military intelligence" (History.com Staff). Another thing Harriet Tubman is less known for is leading armed men to cut off the Confederacy's supply line; in addition she also freed over 700 slaves. After the war was over, Ms. Tubman was compensated $200, although this was very little money she continued to sell pies, gingerbread, etc. to make a living. Harriet Tubman was offered more money for her service of being a spy, but she initially rejected the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Harriet Tubman An Abolitionist Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War. She was born into slavery in Maryland. Harriet and her family worked for Edward Brodas,a slaveholder known for his cruelty. She would work in the fields for extremely long hours. When Harriet became older she would ask other slaves to teach her about the forests around the plantation. It was then she learned about the underground railroad. She set off alone on the 90 mile journey to the North. When she was free she decided to help other slaves get the freedom they deserved. Harriet served in the Union Army as a spy, scout, and a nurse. She also turned her home into a shelter for other slaves. All in all Tubman ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. What Was Harriet Tubman's Greatest Achievement? What do you think Harriet Tubman's greatest achievement is? Well, Harriet was a remarkable woman, so there are multiple options to choose from. Born as Araminta Ross, Harriet was always a really tough, hard working girl. At 5 years old, she was already doing child–care. At 12 years old, she was doing hard field work. At a young age, she constantly lived with the fear of being seperated from her family, which eventually happened when she lost a couple of her sisters. One day in 1849, her master died, and she made the brave choice to escape. With courage, will, and grit, she earned her freedom. After becoming free, what Tubman did in her life is what represented great achievements. She was a Civil War Nurse, a Civil War Spy, a Caregiver, and a Conductor. I believe out of those accomplishments the greatest one was her being a Conductor. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After the Civil War ended, Tubman helped a variety of different people, including deserted babies, old people, and the disabled. She spent the last 48 years of her life helping about 6 to 8 people in her care. In Document E, it states that during the 48 years of Harriet's life after the Civil War, "much of Harriet Tubman's time was spent taking care of poor people in her home." A great accomplishment has a couple aspects to it. One, for example, is time devoted. Harriet Tubman being a caregiver proves to be a great accomplishment as 48 years spent is an abundant amount of time devoted towards helping ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Harriet Tubman During The Civil War Harriet Tubman stated, "I would fight for my liberty so long as my strength lasted, and if the time came for me to go, the Lord would let them take me" (Brainy Quote, 2015). In the face of adversity, Harriet Tubman led hundreds of slaves to freedom from the South before the start of the Civil War. She was a fierce supporter of freedom. "Once the war began, Tubman served as a Union spy"(. She was the only woman known to have led a military operation during the American Civil War. • 6. Black People Were The Victims Of Many Tragedies Essay For centuries, black people were the victims of many tragedies in American history. One of the most memorable misfortunes that this racial group faced was during the times of slavery. Slavery is the practice of labelling human beings as property so they have restricted liberty and are forced into working hard labor for the owners. Many blacks were forced or born into slavery, where they have been deprived of their power and suffered from long hours of work and physical attacks from their owners. Even though this race had been put down consistently, it did not stop certain blacks from rising up to fight the unjustified system. Born in 1822 in Dorchester County, Maryland, Harriet Tubman grew up to be one of the most memorable historical figures in the nation. In her early life, she was the daughter of enslaved parents and forced to work on the plantations. However, Tubman eventually escaped to her freedom in 1849. Even though she ran away from her life as a slave, she came back as leading abolitionist. Tubman's actions contributed to the freedom of the slaves. Tubman was a symbol of bravery and independence to many slaves. Throughout her early life, Tubman faced the many common hardships of slavery, being severely abused by her owner and his family. She was inflicted several permanent scars and physical injuries from the beatings and lashes she received growing up. One of her most painful injuries was given as punishment when she did not halt a runaway slave. Because of her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Harriet Tubman Who Was The Greatest Dbq Harriet Tubman had many achievements, but which was the greatest? Harriet lived in Dorchester County, Maryland. Sadly Harriet Tubman was involved in slavery at a very young age. As years passed, she got older and her master had died, therefore she ran away to be free. From here Harriet rescued other slaves. Most importantly how do you define greatest. Greatest is when you take time, risk, and the number of people helped to see how strong your achievement was. Harriet Tubman achieved many things in her life such as being a nurse, spy, and a caregiver, but Harriett's greatest achievement was the underground railroad. One of Harriet Tubman's achievements was being a nurse for the wounded survivors of the Massachusetts 54th regiment during the day, but at night she baked pies. As a nurse she would thrash away flies and bathe wounds(Doc D). In the time of being a nurse Harriet spent four years doing labor(Doc D). This shows Harriet did not spend that much time doing labor compared to her other achievements. This is important because this will show the amount of time she spent on this achievement. Also, Harriet only helped 3 to 4 men a day(Doc D). This shows she did not help many men. This is important because many men could be hurt but by the end of the day she would only have ... This is important because she saved many people in one day, but this does not mean it's his greatest. Also, this shows it was only one day so this obviously was not her greatest because in order for it it to be the greatest there must be a lot of time put in. This is important because this shows that there was not an awful lot of time put in. Furthermore, there was some what of a risk involved which is that she could have got caught while being spy. • 8. Harriet Tubman Hero Catherine Clinton wrote an extraordinary biography named "Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom". The biography showed how Tubman is a heroic character, who had done many remarkable things during her lifetime. Her living standards were harsh while growing up, yet she was still able to carry out success. Therefore, she is known to be hardworking to the point where she is also stubborn towards labor. After she worked as a U.G.R.R. agent she became a nurse, spy and a scout to help her country with the civil war, and was is important. However, She also risked her life for her fellow African–Americans who have been restricted from their freedom and enslaved to wealthy caucasians, this would be the most important job in her career. Stated in a congressional record Tubman was a "nurse" (Clinton 202) also she was "of great service and value to the government. Throughout the civil war, Tubman was employed to the union army. She worked in the hospital and helped the injured soldiers, as a nurse and a cook. During the civil war she wasn't always a nurse. Since she knew the land so well, because she was a U.R.G.G. agent, she was employed as a spy. General Saxton said he was a witness to the values of Harriet's services. He also claims, " she was employed...as a spy...she made many raids in the enemy's lines displaying remarkable courage, zeal, and fidelity." (Clinton 142). • 10. Harriet The Spy Louise Fitzhugh Question 1: Harriet the Spy In her text Harriet the Spy Louise Fitzhugh treats tropes of the public self and the private self –the secretive part of the self– in and throughout Harriet's status/occupation as a gender queer spy. Harriet –as a gender queer spy– is utilized by Fitzhugh as a grounds for negotiating the supple separation between societal expectations of the public self, and the private/secretive realities of that very self. Consider, for example, Mrs. Gibbs' assertion that Janie and Harriet "need a few graces" especially as they are becoming "young women" (Fitzhugh 80). Harriet then defensively introjects– after Mrs. Gibbs further asserts that Harriet's mother Mrs. Welsch "worried about the way [Harriet] moved"– and defensively states that she moves "fast" (Fitzhugh 80). Ole Golly eventually intervenes and tells Harriet her that "girl spies" need ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Indeed, the first time Harriet spies on the club, Harriet comments on the unsettlement she feels at having heard herself being referred to as a 'she' by her class mates (Fitzhugh 200). The indication, therefore, is that Harriet is still very much and will always be an Other –a she– in relation to this club; a club that seems to function much like heteronormativity, especially when/if someone is outed. Harriet is also an Other as she unlike Rachel, Laura, and Carrie –the most feminized characters of this work– and much like Sport, Pinky, and Janie –the most masculinized/queer characters– detests the thought of bridge. Hence, we witness here a parallelism being drawn between Harriet and the masculinized/queer, that functions not only in relation to Harriet's spying – and her outing as a spy– but also functions in relation to the queerness/masculinization of these ... Not like any normal white child being born that time period, Harriet Tubman was raised in very devastating brutal living conditions. From a very young age she was whipped and mistreated by her owner Edward Brodas. If she did not meet up to the standards of her owner, they had no sympathy. Her younger years until she reached the age of twelve was when she was beaten and whipped for lack of work or the satisfaction of the people her master put her to work for. Furthermore, once she turned twelve she no longer was using the name her parents gave to her at birth but instead her mother's name Harriet. At a very young age when she was put to work in the plantations, Harriet Tubman needed to use a lot of physical strength, it is where she developed her endurance and stamina. • 15. Harriet The Spy Movie Vs Book In Harriet the Spy novel, Harriet's actions and ways can allow readers to think that she is suffering from autism. For example, Harriet dresses very practical, is unable to change her strict routine even when circumstances require it, doesn't understand why people act the way they act, and interprets things literally. It is true that the movie has some of these traits for Harriet, like the literal interpretation of the "Harriet smells" note, but the movie doesn't focus on them enough for us to interpret Harriet as we do in the book. Updated to the multi–cultural 90s, the movie transforms Harriet from a tomboy into a button–cute girl. Harriet's observations no longer have the sting of particularity as in the book. In the movie, she is just a sharp kid scribbling down judgments that she sees. For example, in the movie she wrote "boy with ringlets and tattoos". In the book, she writes what she thinks of people's life based on their physical appearances: "I bet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why can't his father just get a real job?" It is true that Sport is poor, and some of his other classmates may be thinking that too. The only difference is that Harriet wrote it down. The reason for Harriet's transformation from tomboyish in the book may be that gender differences are explored only tentatively in movies, particularly those aimed at children. It is perhaps already daring enough for the film industry to show an 11–year–old girl who is smart, creative, and adventurous: to make her a tomboy would push her over the edge of ... With themes of murder, sexual abuse, neglect, and other forms of violence, both physical and psychological, there seems to be one topic that is slightly more prevalent when speaking about tween literature. Tween literature and culture is often marketed towards young girls and their parents, because of this, it becomes easy to talk about themes of feminism in tween literature. More specifically, due to the time period in which tween culture became mainstream, postfeminism is a topic that is often heavily discussed around tween literature. Both Gail Levine's novel, Ella Enchanted, as well as Louise Fitzhugh's novel Harriet the Spy, can both be analyzed using a postfeminist lense. By using a postfeminist lense in analyzing these books, the issues of postfeminism become apparent when addressing issues such as a false sense of choice for young girls, an idea that they must be ashamed for who they are and the views that they hold. It is further complicated when it becomes apparent that due to postfeminist ideology, women, and specifically young girls have lost the ability to articulate sexism when it affects them. Through these points of contention regarding postfeminism, it becomes aparent that society is not quite ready to hold postfeminist views, since there is still an imbalance of power that women face on a day to day basis. These particular steps began with the Second Great Awakening. Since the Second Great Awakening was a religious movement, its main goal was to encourage ethical behavior. These encouragements lead to the increase of the belief of equality among people. Although many people opposed the idea of equality, those who did support the idea continued to strive toward achieving their goal: the establishment of equality in society and law. An individual who put forth an immense amount of effort to achieve these goals was Harriet Tubman. • 38. Harriet The Spy: Music Analysis "The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things: Of shoes––and ships––and sealing– wax––Of cabbages––and kings–– And why the sea is boiling hot––And whether pigs have wings." The first time I heard these lines I was watching one of my favorite films Harriet the Spy, as a fifth grader. It has been one of those whispering winds in the back of my mind and until recently I could not put it into perspective what it meant as a literary juxtapose and as my personal interpretation. To the perusing eye this may seem like playful banter leaving the lips of an aquatic murmurer in hopes of distracting his prey into submission, however, I internalize this warm folly as a call to action of inevitable fate. It has been said that Lewis Carroll ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Music will never be obsolete, the medium may diminish but the music will remain. These pivotal issues are where we as individuals who become formally educated in the industry work to keep it afloat. These issues range from artists not receiving or earning very little royalty payments, artists and musicians having a harder time becoming mainstream due to the ease of access to technology, cancelled concerts because of low ticket sales, and rising ticket prices and inflation from resellers; The list is vast. The key to researching one of these fascinating topics is first identifying my goal for the research. In finding a topic that I believe progresses the industry I need to present a diligent case study that I nurtured. At first, I thought about building a new module to the form new standards for RIAA Certifications but then I realized that Adele has sold over 7 million copies of "25" and is currently number one on Billboard. This is the follow up album to "21" that never left the charts before her next album was released. I also recalled a night of watching a jaw–dropping episode of Scandal only to have Beyoncé unhinge what was left of my mandible when she released "Beyoncé" out the clear digital skies. It appealed to me because I can recall as a middle schooler anticipating first week sales of my favorite artists. I am not sure if that was normal 11 year old behavior but I will own it! We can agree that most of these artists possess a unique spark that allows them to prevail against the negative elements, so researching their creative footprint would not necessarily benefit upcoming artists as having a niche of their own is key. In my navigation through technology and my observations of the industry I have noticed a general upset when it comes to award shows as it pertains to nominees and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
