The Religious Vows In "The Prologue" of The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer has some
religious characters who break the vows they pledge for, to get a place in the Church. Many
characters in the story seem to have an awkward characteristic that the writer did not notice. Why do
the religious characters break the vow? How do they break it? For example, the monk was a primary
part of the church, but as you keep reading, the characters start to change in ways you could never
imagine. Some character do not interact with each other depending upon their social class level. The
vows that the religious characters break are the Vow of Poverty, the Vow of Chastity, the Vow of
Obedience, and the Vow of Stability. The vow that is probably the most frequently broken is the
Vow of Poverty. According to the "Prologue" of The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer says; "I saw his
sleeves were garnished at the hand/ With fine grey fur, the finest in the land. / And on his hood, to
fasten it at his chin/ He had a wrought–gold cunningly fashioned pin" (197–200). As a religious
figure, the monk probably should not be expensively dressed in fine fur or gold jewelry. He is also
showing others that he is rich with all this jewelry. Later Chaucer says, "He did not rate that text at a

In the poem "To the Ladies," Lady Mary Chudleigh demonstrates affinity between wife and servant
(1) through the use of a controlling metaphor. She describes a wife's role by depicting it through
ideas that are strongly associated with slavery. Chudleigh's use of deigning diction, her description
of the wife's submissive actions, and her negative attitude towards the perceived future of a woman
who gets married show the similarity among wife and servant (1). Chudleigh presents this poem as a
warning to women who are not yet married, and as an offering of regret to those who are.

To use "obey" again brings us back to the beginning of the poem. This reflection reminds us of the
original meaning of "obey," the offering of vows, the beginning of marriage. It is very important to
remind us that we are talking about a wife's servitude and not a slave's. Without this reminder that
Chudleigh is talking about speaking about a wife, the message she is trying to convey is weakened
because we expect this type of servitude from a slave in 1703. You can slip back and forth between
wife and slave because both are treated as possessions and not as people. Chudleigh invites us to see
some interaction between husband and wife. She articulates how submissive a wife can be by saying
that a wife is "governed by a nod" (15). This demonstrates the simplistic, servant like nature a wife
will exhibit to her husband and his expectations of her submissiveness towards him. The husband
expects his wife to obey him by a nod of his head. This pomposity a husband displays in the way he
acknowledges his wife is recognized in other parts of the poem when he is referred to as "law
supreme" (6), "eastern prince" (9) and "god" (16). The simplicity of a nod is condescending and
lowers the importance of a wife to the value of a servant or slave in 1703. Through the wife's
submissive actions a clear connection is drawn between her and a servant. In the servant/master
relationship a servant's actions toward his/her master are agreeable and passive.

Canterbury Tales. Often referred to as the Father of English poetry, Chaucer, is one of the well–

Verse 33 in Matthew 5 the first type of oaths that are addressed are oaths made to the Lord.
Something that was common to both the Jewish culture and the Gentile culture is that the mention of
a deity in an oath spoke to the truth of the oath and also "to punish the one taking the oath if what
was affirmed was not true" . People soon began manipulating this by thinking that they could

For as long as I can remember, the ideal family household consisted of the male/father as the bread
winner, provider, and head of the household, and female/mother, and children as members of this
family. This image was embedded in us through our social class, our parents, our community, and
the social media. The families of today have drastically changed, and are more complex in the
family role. As time progresses, divorce rates are at an all time high, and single parent homes are
even higher. To top it off we can't turn on the TV or computer without seeing or hearing about

In the United States Constitution, the Ninth Amendment is often forgotten or not commonly taught.
The ninth amendment is often denoted as "Enumeration of Rights." This amendment outlines the
human rights that were not written or protected by the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. Marriage is
a right. Everybody and anybody should have the right to marriage. Putting rules and regulations on
marriage is a clear violation of the United States Constitution and a clear violation of our

uncanny marriage of the knight Arveragus and his lady Dorigen. This unlikely union was based on
mutual trust, love and truthfulness and knew neither the rule of the lady that was typical of courtly

In their vows Arveragus and Dorigen constantly refer to each other, as shows the presence of many
pronouns:
