Roland Barthes was a theorist who studied narrative structures in films. He identified five narrative codes that are used to create meaning in movies: enigma codes, which are rhetorical questions that create suspense for the audience to answer; semic codes; symbolic codes; action codes; and cultural codes. Enigma codes specifically refer to rhetorical questions posed to the audience to sustain suspense while watching a film.
