DRAMA – Doctor Who
Press Release: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2011/04_april/05/doctorwho.shtml
In just a
few weeks, "Doctor Who" will return in a brand new season on BBC America, in addition to its traditional home
on the BBC.
As the premiere date of Saturday, April 23 creeps up on us, the BBC has released synopsis for the first two
episodes.
There are definitely SPOILERS AHEAD! So if you want to go in cold, you might want to stop reading now.
Episode 1: The Impossible Astronaut
Four envelopes, numbered 2, 3 and 4, each containing a date, time and map reference, unsigned, but TARDIS
blue. Who sent them? And who received the missing number one? This strange summons reunites the Doctor
(Matt Smith), Amy (Karen Gillan), Rory (Arthur Darvill) and River Song (Alex Kingston) in the middle of the
Utah desert and unveils a terrible secret the Doctor's friends must never reveal to him.
Placing his life entirely in their hands, the Doctor agrees to search for the recipient of the fourth envelope –
just who is Canton Everett Delaware the Third? And what is the relevance of their only other clue: 'Space
1969'? Their quest lands them – quite literally – in the Oval Office, where they are enlisted by President Nixon
himself to assist enigmatic former-FBI agent Canton, in saving a terrified little girl from a mysterious
spaceman.
Episode 2: Day of the Moon
The Doctor is locked in the perfect prison. Amy, Rory and River Song are being hunted down across America
by the FBI. With the help of new friend and FBI-insider, Canton Everett Delaware the Third, our heroes are
reunited to share their discoveries, if not their memories. For the world is occupied by an alien force who
control humanity through post-hypnotic suggestion and no one can be trusted. Aided by President Nixon and
Neil Armstrong's foot, the Doctor must mount a revolution to drive out the enemy and rescue the missing little
girl. No-one knows why they took her. Or why they have kidnapped Amy Pond…

themselves fighting to uphold justice and the rule of law; but always in the
background lurks the fear of the Ripper – is he back for another reign of
terror? As imitators emerge and feral gangs terrorize, Reid and his team
are further drawn into the criminal underbelly of Victorian London - and
their vigilance must be swift to stop those that threaten the calm of the
city
DRAMA – Torchwood
http://news.thedoctorwhosite.co.uk/torchwood-miracle-day-press-release/
Torchwood: Miracle Day is the fourth series of the British science fiction
television series Torchwood, a spin-off from the long-running show Doctor Who.[3]
In contrast to the first three series, which were produced by the BBC, the fourth
series is a British-American co-production involving the BBC's drama production
house BBC Cymru Wales for BBC Worldwide and the U.S. premium network Starz.
It was broadcast in ten episodes beginning 8 July 2011 (U.S.) and 14 July 2011
(UK).[4][5]
The central plot of Miracle Day is that suddenly no one on Earth can die, which
incites increasingly troublesome legislative changes around the world as the global
population soars.[3] In addition to a number of new American cast members and
guest actors, showrunner Russell T Davies recruited several American television
writers to write for Miracle Day, including Jane Espenson, John Shiban and Doris
Egan. British writer John Fay also returned to write for the series, under Davies as
head writer.[6] Production was partially divided along trans-Atlantic lines, with
Kelly Manners producing in the US, and Brian Minchin in the UK.[7] The majority
of the filming took place in Los Angeles, California, with two weeks' additional
shooting in Wales.[8]

Channel 4's Remit
Channel 4's primary purpose is the fulfilment of its public service remit, which is defined in the 2003
Communications Act.
This states that "the public service remit for Channel 4 is the provision of a broad range of high quality and diverse
programming which, in particular:
(a) demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes;
(b) appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society;
(c) makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to
include programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value; and
(d) exhibits a distinctive character."
The remit was updated by the 2010 Digital Economy Act, which, in addition to the above, requires Channel 4 to
participate in a broader range of activities.
The Digital Economy Act 2010 requires Channel 4 to participate in:
the making of a broad range of relevant media content of high quality that, taken as a whole, appeals to the tastes and
interests of a culturally diverse society;
the making of high quality films intended to be shown to the general public at the cinema in the United Kingdom;
the broadcasting and distribution of such content and films;
the making of relevant media content that consists of news and current affairs;
the making of relevant media content that appeals to the tastes and interests of older children and young adults;
the broadcasting or distribution by means of electronic communications networks of feature films that reflect
cultural activity in the United Kingdom (including third party films), and
the broadcasting or distribution of relevant media content by means of a range of different types of electronic
communications networks.
In addition, Channel 4 must also:
promote measures intended to secure that people are well informed and motivated to participate in society in a
variety of ways;
support the development of people with creative talent, in particular people involved in the film industry and at the
start of their careers;
support and stimulate well-informed debate on a wide range of issues, including by providing access to information
and views from around the world and by challenging established views;
promote alternative views and new perspectives, and
provide access to material that is intended to inspire people to make changes in their lives.
Ofcom Licence
Channel 4's licence from Ofcom, in addition to stipulating the need to meet the remit, places certain specific
programme obligations on Channel 4. These establish quotas for programming such as news and current affairs, as
well as quotas for original production, independent production, access services provision, and production in the
Nations and Regions.
Schedule 9 arrangements
Schedule 9 of the Communications Act 2003 imposes a number of procedural obligations on Channel 4. In
compliance with these obligations and in pursuit of good corporate governance Channel 4 has developed a set of
arrangements, which can be found below.
The Schedule 9 arrangements have been approved by Ofcom, and Channel 4's compliance with these arrangements
is audited on an annual basis by Deloitte.

SHERLOCK - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b018ttws
 Sherlock is a British television crime drama that presents a contemporary update of
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Created by Steven Moffat
and Mark Gatiss, it stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin
Freeman as Doctor John Watson. Six episodes have been produced, the first three of
which aired in 2010. Series two aired in 2012, and a third series began production in
March 2013. The series has been sold to over 180 territories.
 The show was conceived by Moffat and Gatiss during train journeys to and from the
Doctor Who production base in Cardiff, where they were both writers. They aspired to
produce a modern-day version of Conan Doyle's stories in which Sherlock uses the
technologies that are available to him today in order to help him solve crimes.
Credited as co-creators, Moffat and Gatiss each write one episode per series, with the
other written by Stephen Thompson. Hartswood Films produced the series for the
BBC and co-produced it with WGBH Boston for its Masterpiece anthology series. The
series is primarily filmed in Cardiff, although the production also uses a variety of
other locations. North Gower Street in London was used for exterior shots of Holmes
and Watson's 221B Baker Street residence.

BEING HUMAN –
Being Human is a British supernatural drama television series. It was created and
written by Toby Whithouse for broadcast on BBC Three.[1] The show blends elements of
flatshare comedy and horror drama. It originally starred Lenora Crichlow as Annie
Sawyer (a ghost), Russell Tovey as George Sands (a werewolf) and Aidan Turner as John
Mitchell (a vampire) — all of whom were sharing accommodation and attempting as best
as they can to live a "normal" life and blend in with the ordinary humans around them. In
the third series, Sinead Keenan became part of the main cast as Nina Pickering (a
werewolf). In the fourth series the ensemble was joined by Michael Socha as Tom McNair
(a werewolf) and Damien Molony as Hal Yorke (a vampire).[2] The fifth series added Kate
Bracken as Alex Miller (a ghost).[3] The first two seasons were set in Totterdown, Bristol,
and the third season onwards relocated to Barry, Wales.[4][5]

Service remit
The remit of BBC Three is to bring younger audiences to high-quality public service broadcasting through a mixed-genre schedule of innovative UK content featuring
new UK talent. The channel should use the full range of digital platforms to deliver its content and to build an interactive relationship with its audience.

Delivering the BBC's purposes in 2009/2010
BBC Three will continue to contribute towards the delivery of the BBC's public purposes in the range of ways set out in its service licence. Key developments in the
way in which the service will contribute to each purpose are outlined below. These are designed to address the priorities identified by the BBC Trust, future-proof the
delivery of the purposes, and address perceived gaps in delivery in line with strategies in the BBC's purpose plans.
^ Back to top

Key developments
1 Stimulating creativity and cultural excellence
•Priority: This year the channel will place particular emphasis on addressing the BBC's priorities through its support for new talent and its investment in fresh and new
risk-taking ideas. For example, BBC Three will continue to cement its reputation as the UK's leading digital channel for new comedy talent with a new studio comedy
from the young performance troupe We Are Klang and a new narrative comedy The Gemma Factor. BBC Three will also extend its support for new UK drama with an
emphasis on young talent in the shape of PAs.
•Priority: BBC Three will aim to innovate, experiment and surprise through its factual programming with a range of formats aimed at young viewers. Young Butcher
Of The Year will be the first in a series of contests aimed at exploring the technical and vocational skills of young working Britons, while My Life As An Animal will
provide a fresh way of exploring natural history.
•As part of its dedication to new creative talent, BBC Three will continue its commitment to support new documentary directors through the Fresh strand.
2 Delivering the benefit of emerging communications technologies
•Priority: BBC Three will continue to connect with harder-to-reach younger audiences by using interactive media. The channel will build on recent interactive
successes by enhancing its presence on mobile platforms. BBC Three will reflect the media consumption of its audience by offering a number of multiplatform
initiatives, such as PAs, that draw together major television projects with content online.
•BBC Three will continue to extend its commitment to new talent into the online arena with material from comedy shows like Scallywagga and We Are Klang sitting
alongside comic talent fresh to the BBC in a new online comedy resource.
3 Sustaining citizenship and civil society
•BBC Three plays an important role in supporting the BBC's priority to improve engagement of harder-to-reach sections of the audience with news, current affairs and
topical issues that are relevant to them. The Grown-Up Season will feature a range of programmes that explore the question: at what age should one be treated as a
grown-up? The season will include a documentary on the age young people should be eligible to vote, as well as programmes examining teen pregnancy and the age
of working responsibility.
•60 Seconds will remain the channel's main TV news bulletin and will continue to offer dedicated nightly world news bulletins as well as regular bulletins focusing on
science and technology and the environment. The current affairs strands Born Survivors and Mischief will return and will cover significant public and personal issues
for young viewers, including the war in Afghanistan and the opium trade, knife crime, absentee fathers, food quality and the environment.
4 Promoting education and learning
•Priority: BBC Three will continue to contribute to the BBC's purpose in this area by exploring a range of important and thought-provoking topics through
compelling factual formats, aimed at connecting with younger audiences. In Where Food Comes From, a group of young people will discover the harsh
conditions and hard work that people in the developing world endure in order to provide food for the UK. With a particular focus on the young, Stacey Does
Child Labour will explore how children can be forced into working lives. A new factual format, Virgin Cooks, will seek to engage young people with fresh food
and cooking at home.
5 Reflecting the UK, its nations, regions and communities
•BBC Three will continue to contribute to the BBC's purpose in this area with strong representation of the UK's diversity in a way that connects with young
audiences. For example, music festival coverage will come from across the UK, ranging from Glastonbury and Radio 1's Big Weekend to Scotland's T In The
Park. The successful new talent comedy Scallywagga will also return from Manchester, as will the drama/horror/comedy series Being Human.
•To support the channel's strategy to reflect the diversity in the UK today, two programmes will tackle the area of disability. Otto's Story explores the life of a
teenager with Down's syndrome, while I'm Alive Again follows the story of a young man who has been paralysed and begins rebuilding his life. The MOBO
(Music Of Black Origin) Awards also returns, continuing to showcase a range of on-screen talent from diverse backgrounds.
6 Bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK
•BBC Three will continue to bring international issues and subject matter to the attention of its audience. The documentary Ben Anderson On The Drugs
Frontline will explore the complex issue of opium production in Afghanistan. The World's Strictest Parents will also return, with each programme exploring a
diverse culture through the eyes of two young British people, and Last Woman Standing will provide anthropological insight into tribes across the world.

 • 2. DRAMA – Doctor Who Press Release: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2011/04_april/05/doctorwho.shtml In just a few weeks, "Doctor Who" will return in a brand new season on BBC America, in addition to its traditional home on the BBC. As the premiere date of Saturday, April 23 creeps up on us, the BBC has released synopsis for the first two episodes. There are definitely SPOILERS AHEAD! So if you want to go in cold, you might want to stop reading now. Episode 1: The Impossible Astronaut Four envelopes, numbered 2, 3 and 4, each containing a date, time and map reference, unsigned, but TARDIS blue. Who sent them? And who received the missing number one? This strange summons reunites the Doctor (Matt Smith), Amy (Karen Gillan), Rory (Arthur Darvill) and River Song (Alex Kingston) in the middle of the Utah desert and unveils a terrible secret the Doctor's friends must never reveal to him. Placing his life entirely in their hands, the Doctor agrees to search for the recipient of the fourth envelope – just who is Canton Everett Delaware the Third? And what is the relevance of their only other clue: 'Space 1969'? Their quest lands them – quite literally – in the Oval Office, where they are enlisted by President Nixon himself to assist enigmatic former-FBI agent Canton, in saving a terrified little girl from a mysterious spaceman. Episode 2: Day of the Moon The Doctor is locked in the perfect prison. Amy, Rory and River Song are being hunted down across America by the FBI. With the help of new friend and FBI-insider, Canton Everett Delaware the Third, our heroes are reunited to share their discoveries, if not their memories. For the world is occupied by an alien force who control humanity through post-hypnotic suggestion and no one can be trusted. Aided by President Nixon and Neil Armstrong's foot, the Doctor must mount a revolution to drive out the enemy and rescue the missing little girl. No-one knows why they took her. Or why they have kidnapped Amy Pond…

DRAMA – Torchwood http://news.thedoctorwhosite.co.uk/torchwood-miracle-day-press-release/ Torchwood: Miracle Day is the fourth series of the British science fiction television series Torchwood, a spin-off from the long-running show Doctor Who.[3] In contrast to the first three series, which were produced by the BBC, the fourth series is a British-American co-production involving the BBC's drama production house BBC Cymru Wales for BBC Worldwide and the U.S. premium network Starz. It was broadcast in ten episodes beginning 8 July 2011 (U.S.) and 14 July 2011 (UK).[4][5] The central plot of Miracle Day is that suddenly no one on Earth can die, which incites increasingly troublesome legislative changes around the world as the global population soars.[3] In addition to a number of new American cast members and guest actors, showrunner Russell T Davies recruited several American television writers to write for Miracle Day, including Jane Espenson, John Shiban and Doris Egan. British writer John Fay also returned to write for the series, under Davies as head writer.[6] Production was partially divided along trans-Atlantic lines, with Kelly Manners producing in the US, and Brian Minchin in the UK.[7] The majority of the filming took place in Los Angeles, California, with two weeks' additional shooting in Wales.[8]

This states that "the public service remit for Channel 4 is the provision of a broad range of high quality and diverse programming which, in particular: (a) demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of programmes; (b) appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society; (c) makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public service channels to include programmes of an educational nature and other programmes of educative value; and (d) exhibits a distinctive character." The remit was updated by the 2010 Digital Economy Act, which, in addition to the above, requires Channel 4 to participate in a broader range of activities. The Digital Economy Act 2010 requires Channel 4 to participate in: the making of a broad range of relevant media content of high quality that, taken as a whole, appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society; the making of high quality films intended to be shown to the general public at the cinema in the United Kingdom; the broadcasting and distribution of such content and films; the making of relevant media content that consists of news and current affairs; the making of relevant media content that appeals to the tastes and interests of older children and young adults; the broadcasting or distribution by means of electronic communications networks of feature films that reflect cultural activity in the United Kingdom (including third party films), and the broadcasting or distribution of relevant media content by means of a range of different types of electronic communications networks. In addition, Channel 4 must also: promote measures intended to secure that people are well informed and motivated to participate in society in a variety of ways; support the development of people with creative talent, in particular people involved in the film industry and at the start of their careers; support and stimulate well-informed debate on a wide range of issues, including by providing access to information and views from around the world and by challenging established views; promote alternative views and new perspectives, and provide access to material that is intended to inspire people to make changes in their lives. Ofcom Licence Channel 4's licence from Ofcom, in addition to stipulating the need to meet the remit, places certain specific programme obligations on Channel 4. These establish quotas for programming such as news and current affairs, as well as quotas for original production, independent production, access services provision, and production in the Nations and Regions. Schedule 9 arrangements Schedule 9 of the Communications Act 2003 imposes a number of procedural obligations on Channel 4. In compliance with these obligations and in pursuit of good corporate governance Channel 4 has developed a set of arrangements, which can be found below. The Schedule 9 arrangements have been approved by Ofcom, and Channel 4's compliance with these arrangements is audited on an annual basis by Deloitte.

 • 13. Dramas on BBC Three SHERLOCK - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b018ttws  Sherlock is a British television crime drama that presents a contemporary update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, it stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Doctor John Watson. Six episodes have been produced, the first three of which aired in 2010. Series two aired in 2012, and a third series began production in March 2013. The series has been sold to over 180 territories.  The show was conceived by Moffat and Gatiss during train journeys to and from the Doctor Who production base in Cardiff, where they were both writers. They aspired to produce a modern-day version of Conan Doyle's stories in which Sherlock uses the technologies that are available to him today in order to help him solve crimes. Credited as co-creators, Moffat and Gatiss each write one episode per series, with the other written by Stephen Thompson. Hartswood Films produced the series for the BBC and co-produced it with WGBH Boston for its Masterpiece anthology series. The series is primarily filmed in Cardiff, although the production also uses a variety of other locations. North Gower Street in London was used for exterior shots of Holmes and Watson's 221B Baker Street residence.  PRESS RELEASE: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2010/07_july/12/sherlock.sh tml

In the fourth series the ensemble was joined by Michael Socha as Tom McNair (a werewolf) and Damien Molony as Hal Yorke (a vampire).[2] The fifth series added Kate Bracken as Alex Miller (a ghost).[3] The first two seasons were set in Totterdown, Bristol, and the third season onwards relocated to Barry, Wales.[4][5] PRESS RELEASE: http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2011/01_january/07/being_hu man.shtml

 • 16. Service remit The remit of BBC Three is to bring younger audiences to high-quality public service broadcasting through a mixed-genre schedule of innovative UK content featuring new UK talent. The channel should use the full range of digital platforms to deliver its content and to build an interactive relationship with its audience. Delivering the BBC's purposes in 2009/2010 BBC Three will continue to contribute towards the delivery of the BBC's public purposes in the range of ways set out in its service licence. Key developments in the way in which the service will contribute to each purpose are outlined below. These are designed to address the priorities identified by the BBC Trust, future-proof the delivery of the purposes, and address perceived gaps in delivery in line with strategies in the BBC's purpose plans. ^ Back to top Key developments 1 Stimulating creativity and cultural excellence •Priority: This year the channel will place particular emphasis on addressing the BBC's priorities through its support for new talent and its investment in fresh and new risk-taking ideas. For example, BBC Three will continue to cement its reputation as the UK's leading digital channel for new comedy talent with a new studio comedy from the young performance troupe We Are Klang and a new narrative comedy The Gemma Factor. BBC Three will also extend its support for new UK drama with an emphasis on young talent in the shape of PAs. •Priority: BBC Three will aim to innovate, experiment and surprise through its factual programming with a range of formats aimed at young viewers. Young Butcher Of The Year will be the first in a series of contests aimed at exploring the technical and vocational skills of young working Britons, while My Life As An Animal will provide a fresh way of exploring natural history. •As part of its dedication to new creative talent, BBC Three will continue its commitment to support new documentary directors through the Fresh strand. 2 Delivering the benefit of emerging communications technologies •Priority: BBC Three will continue to connect with harder-to-reach younger audiences by using interactive media. The channel will build on recent interactive successes by enhancing its presence on mobile platforms. BBC Three will reflect the media consumption of its audience by offering a number of multiplatform initiatives, such as PAs, that draw together major television projects with content online. •BBC Three will continue to extend its commitment to new talent into the online arena with material from comedy shows like Scallywagga and We Are Klang sitting alongside comic talent fresh to the BBC in a new online comedy resource. 3 Sustaining citizenship and civil society •BBC Three plays an important role in supporting the BBC's priority to improve engagement of harder-to-reach sections of the audience with news, current affairs and topical issues that are relevant to them. The Grown-Up Season will feature a range of programmes that explore the question: at what age should one be treated as a grown-up? The season will include a documentary on the age young people should be eligible to vote, as well as programmes examining teen pregnancy and the age of working responsibility. •60 Seconds will remain the channel's main TV news bulletin and will continue to offer dedicated nightly world news bulletins as well as regular bulletins focusing on science and technology and the environment. The current affairs strands Born Survivors and Mischief will return and will cover significant public and personal issues for young viewers, including the war in Afghanistan and the opium trade, knife crime, absentee fathers, food quality and the environment.
 • 17. 4 Promoting education and learning •Priority: BBC Three will continue to contribute to the BBC's purpose in this area by exploring a range of important and thought-provoking topics through compelling factual formats, aimed at connecting with younger audiences. In Where Food Comes From, a group of young people will discover the harsh conditions and hard work that people in the developing world endure in order to provide food for the UK. With a particular focus on the young, Stacey Does Child Labour will explore how children can be forced into working lives. A new factual format, Virgin Cooks, will seek to engage young people with fresh food and cooking at home. 5 Reflecting the UK, its nations, regions and communities •BBC Three will continue to contribute to the BBC's purpose in this area with strong representation of the UK's diversity in a way that connects with young audiences. For example, music festival coverage will come from across the UK, ranging from Glastonbury and Radio 1's Big Weekend to Scotland's T In The Park. The successful new talent comedy Scallywagga will also return from Manchester, as will the drama/horror/comedy series Being Human. •To support the channel's strategy to reflect the diversity in the UK today, two programmes will tackle the area of disability. Otto's Story explores the life of a teenager with Down's syndrome, while I'm Alive Again follows the story of a young man who has been paralysed and begins rebuilding his life.
