CHAPTER 16: DATA MIGRATION
Objectives
The objectives are:
• Review important considerations when converting Microsoft®
FRx
6.7 data to Management Reporter
• Explore the migration steps
Introduction
Management Reporter provides the necessary migration tools to help Microsoft
FRx 6.7 users convert their reports and related building blocks.
A three-step process is required for the migration:
1. Identify the Microsoft FRx 6.7 system file.
2. Configure the Management Reporter Migration Wizard.
3. Validate the migrated data, correct errors as needed, and rebuild
report definitions and building blocks that may not migrate.
This training explores each step in detail.
NOTE: The steps in this course are for demonstration only and are not to be completed
by students.

Overview
When users are migrating data from Microsoft FRx 6.7 to Management Reporter,
they need to make several considerations:
• Migration tools must be run by a user who has the administrator role
in Management Reporter and dbo access to the SQL Server database.
• Removing unused and unneeded reports and building blocks in
Microsoft FRx 6.7 is recommended prior to migrating data.
• The migration deletes all current data and therefore must be run as
the first step when users are configuring Management Reporter.
NOTE: If reports or building blocks are defined in Management Reporter, perform an
export to preserve the data. After migration, the data is imported into the desired
building block group. Refer to "Export and Import Building Blocks" topic in the "Review
Plus" chapter of this training for detailed information on the export and import process.
• Migrations are supported from any service pack of Microsoft FRx
6.7.
• When the FRxSys32.mdb file (the source of the migration) is located
on a network share, the file must contain UNC paths, not local paths.
Terminology
The following table lists terminology in Microsoft FRx 6.7 and compares it to
terminology in Management Reporter.

NOTE: Because of program improvements, some building blocks may have to be updated
in Management Reporter before they will pass validation.

Migrated Data
The following Microsoft FRx 6.7 data is converted in the migration process:
• Company Information:
o Company code
o Company name
o Specification set
o Regional options
o Period descriptions
• Specification Sets:
o Row Formats
o Column Layouts
o Reporting Trees
• Account Sets
• Font styles
NOTE: Account Set names are migrated, but the data in the Account Set is not.
Non-Migrated Data
The following list details information that is not converted in the migration
process:
• Company configuration information
• Reports generated to the FRx DrillDown Viewer (.frd files)
• Security configuration, including user names and passwords
• E-mail addresses entered in reporting catalogs
• Data related to Microsoft FRx 6.7 that is not available in
Management Reporter
NOTE: An example of report design elements that are not available in Management
Reporter include Row Formats that link to row codes in other Row Formats.

Migration Steps
The FRxSys32.mdb file is the source of the migration to Management Reporter.
This Microsoft®
Office Access file was installed to the SysData directory during
the installation of Microsoft FRx 6.7 and tells the Migration Wizard where to
find the related *.f32 and *.g32 files.
NOTE: The followings steps are for demonstration only and are not performed by
students.
The migration process starts from the Management Reporter Migration
Wizard. This wizard is opened by clicking the Windows Start menu, pointing to
All Programs, then Microsoft Dynamics ERP, then the Management
Reporter folder, then Migration Wizard.
The Management Reporter Migration Wizard contains 11 steps, each of which is
discussed in this lesson.
Getting Started
The Getting Started window in the Management Reporter Migration Wizard
has the following options:
• Migrate and convert FRx 6.7 data, then validate building blocks
• Only migrate and convert FRx 6.7 data
• Only validate building blocks

Specify Connection
The Specify Connection window in the Management Reporter Migration
Wizard requires the name of the server where Management Reporter is installed
and the database.
Type in the server name, select the Management Reporter database, and then
click Next.
Select FRx Data
The Select FRx Data window in the Management Reporter Migration Wizard
requires you to specify the location of the FRxSys32.mdb file location.
Use the ellipsis button (...) to locate the FRxSys32.mdb file location and then
click Next.
Migrate FRx Data
The Migrate FRx Data window in the Management Reporter Migration
Wizard confirms that the migration has copied the data from Microsoft FRx 6.7
to Management Reporter. The following warning displays: "During the
migration process, any data which currently exists in Management Reporter will
be deleted. This process cannot be reversed."

Each company that will be migrated must be configured.
The following steps are used to configure the FRx company:
1. In the Company Configuration window, click in the Select
Provider field next to the FRx company.
2. Select the appropriate provider type for the company's data source to
start the Company Wizard window.
3. In the Company Wizard window, type the Server name, select the
Login information, and select the Database that is the data source
for the company being configured.
4. Click Next.
5. On the Company Selection window of the Company Wizard, use
the drop-down box to select the company being configured, and then
click Next.
6. On the Summary window of the Company Wizard, verify that all
information is correct and then click Next to return to the
Management Reporter Wizard.
7. Notice the check mark in the Configured field.
8. Repeat steps 1-7 for each additional FRx company that requires
configuration.
Company Credentials
The Company Credentials window in the Management Reporter Migration
Wizard is where credentials to connect to the configured companies are applied.
Depending on the source system, you can use either Windows authentication or
standard authentication. You can configure credentials for the same user of
multiple companies or configure them separately with different users. Select the
Save credentials option to automatically use those credentials at sign in.
Click the Use same credentials option, then Use Windows authentication
option, then the Save credentials option, and then click Next.
Select Default Company
The Select Default Company window in the Management Reporter Migration
Wizard enables you to select the default company used with Management
Reporter. This company will be used for any reports that have the company value
set to @ANY.
Use the drop-down arrow to select the default Company and then click Next.

The Company Configuration window in the Management Reporter
Migration Wizard also confirms the conversion. During the building blocks
validation process, the wizard will ensure that migrated building blocks meet the
more rigorous validation criteria required in Management Reporter. Building
block validation may take a while to be completed, depending on the number of
building blocks being migrated.
Click the Proceed with the building block validation option and then click
Next.
Complete the Wizard
The Complete Wizard window in the Management Reporter Migration
Wizard is the final step in the process. The following message will display:
"Congratulations. You have successfully completed the Management Reporter

Validation Warnings and Failure
Some building blocks migrated from Microsoft FRx 6.7 may not pass the more
rigorous validation performed by Management Reporter.
Building blocks that do not pass validation display either a warning (yellow
triangle icon) or failure (red diamond icon) in the validation summary log. The
definition list specifies which fields require correction.
Report definition and building blocks that fail are not migrated and must be
recreated in Management Reporter. Report definitions and building blocks that
display the warning icon do migrate, but you must resolve the error(s) before
saving changes in Report Designer.

Summary
This part of training explores the three-step process required when migrating
reports and their related building blocks from Microsoft FRx 6.7 to Management
Reporter. In addition to reviewing the migration and validation processes, the
training explored the steps required to resolve errors and data not migrated
because of the more rigorous design standards in Management Reporter.
