Lgbt Rights History Essay
LGBT Rights Throughout History Looking back throughout history at the rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender
individuals, it isn't hard to see that we have made the majority of our strides in the past 10 years. As a society we have decided
the time is now to put an end to the lack of rights for people of different sexual orientations. Accepting LGBT individuals and
providing them the same rights and protections as all other Americans makes us a more united, respectable Country. Everyone
deserves equal treatment and opportunities regardless of what their sexual orientation may be.
Prior to the Stonewall riots, LGBT individuals were widely discriminated against and regularly denied access into the most
common places. Places they could ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Prevention Of Violence And Discrimination Based On...
Committee: GA3 – The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee
Issue: The prevention of violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity
Student Officer: Sarah Lim
Position: Chair of the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee
________________________________________
Introduction:
Gender identity and sexual orientation is one of the more stigmatized and marginalized aspects of self–expression for any
human in our society today. A state or country with a more liberal take on the expression of gender identity and sexual
orientation tends to be more prosperous, in terms of happiness, simply because people can freely be themselves and be with
their loved ones without fear of persecution, discrimination or even ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gender Identity: An individual's inner sense of being and ones own understanding of how one identifies either as a man,
woman, neither or both.
Biological sex: The physiological attributes, which determine whether a person is male, female or intersex based on anatomy,
chromosomes and hormones.
Gender expression: the ways in which a person expresses their gender identity by manifesting masculinity, femininity, both or
neither through behavior, appearances, preferences and more. Topic Summary/Overview
Before further investigation it is important to keep in mind that the LGBT community usually faces discrimination in terms of
job opportunities, income, access to basic healthcare, legal recognition of same sex partners etc. however, one of the more
serious difficulties the LGBT community faces would be exposure to violence and discrimination simply due to their identity
and orientation. This may occur due to one's state and judicial system or in terms of hate crimes encouraged by an anti–LGBT
community along with prejudicial ties in religion and culture
Often so prejudice against the LGBT community is caused by the stigmatization of homosexuality, which had previously been
labeled as a mental illness, or an ailment of one's spirit, as well as having to be strongly correlated towards AIDs due to past
events. Therefore the more traditional general public sees people of the LGBT community, as well as their efforts to achieve
their rights, as a threat to ones values

LGBT
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community have been the victims of discrimination and prejudice since the Post
War Period. Although it is not documented, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender relationships have existed in many different
cultures for many years. However, this community was not accepted which created a state of secrecy and shame among them.
The LGBT community has had many obstacles preventing them from feeling like a complete part of their communities.
Throughout history, LGBT individuals have been portrayed in society as inferior compared to the heterosexual society that
exists. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals were considered mentally defective and/or morally dissolute by
75% of the population, and a little more than 20% were unsure. (Underwood, Alice, 43) The sense of inferiority towards
LGBT stirred up several issues in society and in the politics. They have been denied access in the military, had health care
limitations, and have been a prime target in the issue with aids. Over the years there has been increased violence and
discrimination towards those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. In modern times, relations have slowly began to
change and LGBTs have been accepted by many. The LGBT movement sparked and has made a lot of progress over the years.
According to the article of LGBT Politics and American Political

Lgbt Should Have The Same Facilities Like A Man And Woman
Do you think fair to say in our society only two type of gender is main? Do you think LGBT should have the same facilities
like a man and woman in our society? You might think what is LGBT? LGBT stand for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.
LGBT existed in American society since the 17th century. It has have been a big issue since then. In 1958, in Inc. v. Olesen US
supreme court first rules in favor of LGBT. They were not safe and protected in American society, even after the civil war.
Since 1865, LGBT has not realized the full protections of the 14th amendment. They were not getting full protections of the
14th amendment because people in our society didn 't want to give them equal rights like others and see them differently.

They faced lots of violence from police since 1865. When LGBT went outside they were stopped police more often and got
mistreated. When they went to police with their problems, they were harassed by police. The article The Evolution of a
Revolution: From Demonstration to Celebrate – The Birth of Pride by Shamey Cramer support this claim. In that article, In
1970, Howard Efland, a gay man, who was brutally murdered by members of the Los Angeles Police Department because he
was found in a hotel where gay people have sex. Cramer wrote in this article that "Witnesses stated that when the police raided
the place, they beat him, dragged him down the hall, naked, bleeding and screaming. Then they threw him into the back of the
police wagon." This evidence showed police were handling LGBT's issue with more force than necessary and they did not
treat them fairly. This was mistreatment because when police found that out they started violence without talking people in
that hotel. Police should not beat people to dead in first chance. They faced horrible violence from police. This source has
some weaknesses This author only talk about bad things about LAPD, the author didn't put more attention on the fact that it
was a hotel where gay people had sex and all the witness were from that hotel. They didn't have any outside witnesses. The
witness can exaggerate the event because it happened to their people. This event was not the

Domestic Violence Annotated Bibliography
The Impact of Domestic Violence in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Community Kim Johnson Spring 2016 Senior
Seminar Research Paper Trinity Washington University Chapter One This literary writing will attempt to examine the impact
of domestic violence (DV) in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender community (LGBT). Domestic violence is prominent in a
homosexual relationship, if not more so than in a heterosexual relationship (White & Goldberg, 2006). Domestic violence is
also associated with intimate partner violence (IPV) (Dunne, 2014). Statistically, domestic violence rates are higher than
heterosexual domestic violence with IPV (Fox, 2010). Knowing that domestic violence brings about a plethora of disparities, it

The response to heterosexual domestic violence is addressed differently because often times it is the woman that is being
physically, mentally and/or emotionally abused by her intimate partner (Almeida, et al, 2009). Law enforcers, organizations
and families often come to the aid of the women simply because they feel the woman is of a weaker sex (Sargent, 2009).

Importance Of The LGBT Community
Why the LGBT community should be treated equally The LGBT community has been around for centuries, although there
was never an official name for the community before the 1980s, outside of slurs, people have always identified outside of the
"norm." From about 1988, activists began to use the initialism 'LGBT' in the United States. Despite the fact that LGBT does
not nominally encompass all individuals in smaller communities (pansexual, nonbinary, agender, etc.) the term is generally
accepted to include those not specifically identified in the four–letter initialism (Shankle). According to LGBT, the first
documented gay rights organization was founded by Henry Gerber. Gerber founded the "The Society for Human Rights" in
Chicago, Illinois in 1924. The fight for LGBT rights has been a long and hard road and it will never end as long as the
community is seen as inferior by straight and cisgendered people. Marriage equality was a huge step in progress for same sex
couples but that doesn't mean queer people are still equally respected in today's society. The three main discriminatory actions
taken against LGBT Americans have been violence, employment discrimination, and inaccessible health care. Violence
towards members of the community has always been a huge issue. Lesbian, gay and transgender people, especially those of
color, experience violence at disproportionately high rates compared to straight cisgender people. According to the FBI, bias
against sexual orientation and

The Importance Of Equality In The Same Sex Community
On June 2015, same sex marriage was declared legal across the nation. The reason that #lovewins became a movement was
because for years same – sex couples in many states were denied Marriage. ( Adam Liptak,2015) The purpose of this online
social movement was to shed light on the need of equality in the the same sex community because the same sex community
are still being treated unfair. The same sex community is also known as the LGBT community stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual
and transgender and along with heterosexual(lgbt.ie).
There were many Past issues on homosexuals being treated unfair, for example, police harassment, History.com stated that on
June 28 1969 in New York the Stonewall riots were taking place. Later in the night a little after three a.m., police raided
Stonewall Inn, a gay nightclub, which then turned into a riot protested by homosexuals. Even though the police had a reason to
raid their nightclubs , for serving liquor without a liquor license. New york's gay community had gotten tired of the law
enforcement targeting gay clubs, many of which that have been closed. The rioters then began to throw bottles at the police
and made their way into the neighborhood streets of new York, the riot didn't end until the police called in their riot police. The
riot was then followed by continuous days of demonstrations in New York and also was the reason for the start of a formation
of the Gay Liberation Front as well as other same sex and bisexual civil rights

Approximately, 8.8 million United States citizens are considered to be apart of the LGBT community. With these numbers on
the rise, homicide rates regarding LGBT people in the last five–seven years appear to be climbing and staying that way.
Because of these statistics that are increasing every day, it is crucial that protection laws be put in place for the benefit of
LGBT people. The United States is no stranger to hate crimes. With years worth of civil rights movements, is it any surprise
that the LGBT community is now looking for their own validation?
Homicides have been on the rise with LGBT people the main targets. "Aside from the forty–nine deaths in the Orlando

With few exceptions, most anti–lgbt laws create a blanket excuse for people openly discriminate with no consideration of or

Hate Crimes: A Qualitative Study
Victimization of LGBT community members is elevating as time passes. Researchers attempt to determine the prevalence of
the violence committed against members of the LGBT community (Rothman, Exner, & Baughman, 2011). Many people that
identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender that are victims of hate crimes have participated in studies where they insist
that the crimes committed against them are based on their sexuality; not class, color, gender, or any other factor. In a
qualitative study, Meyer (2009) conducted open–ended interviews with people who were victims of hate crimes. The
participants were recruited at LGBT advocacy organizations. Those who presumed that their hate crime was due to multiple

Schott, Holland, and Mathews (2009), reveals that students who go directly from high school to college experience multiple
cycles of (re)socialization. Many hate crimes are committed against college students because this is usually when college
students begin their "coming out" process. Most research is done based on the attitudes of students toward their peers with an
alternative choice of sexuality. Their research was based on classification in a relatively diverse college setting. Younger
students, freshman and sophomores are less likely to be open to the idea of homosexuality. Students of this age group are more
likely still in the process of being (re)socialized and are still dependent on what is instilled in them by their guardians prior to
going to college. This attitude is one that leads to hate crimes. Older students, juniors and seniors, have a higher tolerance for
the alternative lifestyle for they have become adapted to the idea of people being different (Schott, Holland, & Mathews

Take Me To Church Essay
Music is playing a vital role in today's world; it can draw billions of people from different parts of the world and arouse their
emotional. Music is a popular way to communicate with others by express oneself in the lyrics. The song "Take me to church"
is one of the controversial songs, and it attracts many attentions towards LGBT community.
"Take me to church" is written by an Irish musician Andrew Hozier–Byrneand himself and co–produced by Rob Kirwan. The
song was released on September 13, 2013, and it was his second debut extended play. Hozier is experienced a bad broke–up

Persuasive Essay On LGBT Rights
The LGBT community has made progress towards gaining more rights in recent years, although it has been an uphill battle. In
the past year alone LGBT marriage has been legalized in Australia, Malta, and Germany, with the legalization of LGBT
marriage in the U.S. in 2015 also being a resounding success. In addition, LGBT rights have also become a greater discussion
topic in households, radio shows, and broadcasts around the world. However, while a lot of progress has been made, LGBT
individuals and their allies are still struggling for the basic human rights they deserve.
Discrimination feels like a relic of the past––something Americans struggled against and that was outlawed in the 1960s. But
this was not the case for LGBT individuals. Today, in America, land of the free and the home of the brave, a lesbian can be
fired simply for being gay. A gay couple can be refused a wedding cake for the most important day in their life. A gay couple
could be refused their right to adopt a child. Much of this discrimination is chalked up to a concept called "religious freedom."
Religious freedom is the right to deny service based on the idea that it conflicts with the business owner's religious beliefs, and
has been used most recently to defend discrimination against LGBT people. The world has heard this argument many times
before. According to the LA Times, "1960s...a small chain of barbecue restaurants in South Carolina, said that its owner's
freedom of religion would be violated if

Violence Against Racialized Groups, Women, And The Lgbt...
The social problem that I will be discussing in this paper will be violence. Specifically the violence against racialized groups,
women, and the LGBT community. Violence is directly linked with poverty, as the poorest neighborhoods tend to have the
highest crime rate. The groups most likely to be at risk for victimization tend to be poor people, for instance countless
indigenous women are victimized. "In Saskatchewan, Indigenous women equal to 6 percent of the population, yet account for
60 percent of its missing women"(PowerPoint presentation, Violence). Indigenous women are extremely poor and that's
relevant, as the majorities are sex workers– these sex workers face horrific tragedies as violence against them is at an
alarmingly high level. Canada has criminalized sex workers and that has led to increased violence by cause of law
enforcement giving extra attention to the illegal sexual transaction. Furthermore with higher police surveillance, the state
further perpetuates this social problem due to the fact that police officers are responsible for a large portion of the violence
against sex workers, which tends to be intentional. Women tend to be victimized greater than men (do not know if it is because
men never report sexual abuse) and a large number of their troubles are overlapped which is called intersectionality.
Specifically, poor indigenous women are more likely to be a victim of violence than a rich white woman. The state further
perpetuates violence against

The Regulation Of Lgbt Orientation
"It takes no compromise to give people their rights...it takes no money to respect the individual. It takes no political deal to
give people freedom. It takes no survey to remove repression" (Milk). The regulation of LGBT* discrimination in various
environments varies by jurisdiction. Many states have established rules that prohibit bias in hiring, promotion, job assignment,
termination, compensation and general harassment based on sexual orientation. However, very few of these protections extend
to cover sexual identity. The repercussions of these limited protections surfaced from the very beginning in the form of
discrimination, attacks and abuse of LGBT* citizens. In fact, over half of US workers in today's labor force work in a state
where it is perfectly legal to fire someone or refuse them employment based on their gender or sexual orientation. Society
likes to pretend as though these violent attacks have lessened through the years, though the truth of the matter is that, over the
last ten years, though hate crimes in general have gone down, the percentage of hate crime victims targeted based on sexual
orientation or gender is on the rise. Many incredible activists have made monumental attempts at understanding the nature of
these hate crimes and this discrimination in modern America. However, even the most incredible scholars cannot completely
comprehend the nature of the violence until they experience it for themselves, and Clementine Von Radics is one of these

Why LGBT Should Have Equal Rights We all as humans have a sexual orientation and gender identity. This fact has stated
discrimination against members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community, based on sexual orientation and
gender identity is a major problem in the United States that affects many people. I believe that all people, regardless of their
sexual preference or gender identification, should be able to have and enjoy their human rights. Equal rights for LGBTs would

Similar to many ethnic groups the LGBT community needs protection from discrimination and ignorance. We can improve the
hatred by learning that there is no wrong in being with who you love for the rest of your life. The government has done a lot to
improve the amount of discrimination and violence against LGBTs, but there is still more we can do as the people of the
United States of America. If we all work together as a community we can make #EqualityWins the next victory for the LGBT
community.

In this Gays and lesbians deserve equal protection against the hate crimes that happen in the world. Aren't we told as young

sexual preference? The statistics show the percentages of the hate discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transsexual community. The violence that they are pitted against, due to people's discrimination against them, in life. And I
will also mention the discrimination that the LGBT community goes through and what they miss out based on sexual
preference. Atlanta, Georgia, is one of the largest LGBT populations in the South, if not the nation. An yearly LGBT pride
festival draws about 200,000 people. Several neighborhoods have businesses that market heavily to the LGBT. The statistics
show that eighty five percent of cases on violence and harassment were because of homophobic language and assaults on
those people. The city of Atlanta has been ranked the 32nd in the percentage of same–sex unmarried households. If you
narrow it down to cities with overall populations greater than 100,000, Atlanta ranked sixth in the percentage of same–sex
unmarried households. A 2008 study showed that 390 gay, lesbian bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Victorians found that out
of one in seven were living in homophobia fear of violence happening to them. In another study, this one based in Australia ,

Education Health has been linked to education. Under achievement at school or incomplete education like school dropout can

Educational attainment can be threatened by several forms of violence like bullying, victimization, harassment and hate crime

"Bullying is a form of violence characterized as an aggressive behavior that is unprovoked and intended to cause harm"

Declaration of Human Rights mentions marriage equality, but not for gay people. "As soon as a person is legally entitled, he or
she has the right to marry and have a family. In doing this, neither the color of your skin, the country you come from nor your
religion should be impediments" (Universal Declaration of Human Rights). The declaration also fails to be specific in many
areas such as protection from invasion, because of this LGBT+ people were tossed to the side without any legal representation
to protect them. "You have the right to ask to be protected if someone tries to harm your good name, enter your house, open
your letters, or bother your family without a good reason" (Universal Declaration of Human Rights). This document is held
high as a symbol and representation of rights for everyone. Sadly, it fails to represent LGBT+ people, which only fueled the

Gay Rights And The Lgbt Community
"One thing the gay rights movement taught the world is the importance of being visible." – Charles M. Blow. The LGBT
community haves rights to live normally just as much as people who are not in the LGBT community. Most homosexuals are
hated and treated differently because of their sexuality. There will never be an understanding of why does some people choose
to be homophobic. There is history of LGBT violence. It all had started back as far as the 1930's during the Holocaust. But one
of the foulest murders of LGBT people in the U.S. was in the arson fire at the Upstairs Lounge, a New Orleans gay bar, June
24, 1973. That evening, a fire flounced up the stairwell and into the congested bar upstairs, and as the sitting room had striped,
it was testing for consumers and workers to discharge the building. It was about over sixty individuals at the bar, and 32
individuals perished in the fire.
Not one person was ever prosecuted for the burning. There are people who have confidence that the fire was started by a guy
named Rodger Nunez. He was a man who had made terrorizing threats after being thrown out of the bar previously that day.
Nunez supposedly admitted to the action when intoxicated, later denied it when he became sober. He killed himself a year later
after the gay bar fire. This term paper will discuss the violence and rights that the LGBT community had to fight with
throughout the years. There have been tons of death cases against the LGBT community. There have also

Sexual And Relationship Violence Summary
Abstract
Just like straight men and women, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community (LGBT) experience sexual and
relationship violence. It is happening to several LGBT college students today." There are a few regulations for those who face
sexual and relationship violence. However, many sexual and relationship violence regulations only stand for the straight men
and women. So, some college campuses have started using bystanders to help prevent sexual and relationship violence with
different strategies. "These strategies seek to engage community members in the prevention of sexual and relationship
violence by training them to identify and safely intervene in situations where sexual or relationship violence is about to occur,
is occurring, or has occurred" (Sharyn J). Bystanders Helping the LGBT Community with Sexual and Relationship Violence
Summary
Sexual and relationship violence in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community is just as important as it is for
straight men and women. It is also important that the LGBT community gets the same help and prevention treatment as other
do. People in the LGBT community that are in college are most likely to experience sexual and relationship violence. They

"The programs, each of which utilizes a different approach, are currently in place on college campuses in the United States and

strategies they are using do help. Although, "The use of strategies to engage members of the broader community in preventing
sexual an relationship violence within and against the LGBT community needs to be increased" (Potter). Also, the reasons
some of the LGBT community member do not look for help needs to be taken care of and there should be more help for

Homosexuality In America
According to Doug Meyer "Many LGBT people described homosexuality as linked with whiteness. This association is a
broad, large scale cultural phenomenon in the United States with deep historical roots. While minority communities including
white LGBT communities and Black heterosexual ones, may reinforce this association, the linking of homosexuality with
whiteness is part of dominant U.S society." (Meyer, 2015)
Throughout US history, black men have been defamed as very sexual. This cultural association is one of different reasons that
triggers violence, hate crime, sexual assault and robbery against LGBT of color. They have higher poverty rates than their
black straight counterparts, and white gay couples. They trade sex for money. They ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In military institution, "Don't ask, don't tell" is the official United States policy introduced by Clinton's Administration. It
allows open service by gay, bisexuals and lesbians. Since the application of this policy, research shows that LGBT members
have better conditions of service and improvement in their daily life. In 2010, a study sponsored by the Department of Defense
showed 8% LGBT military were victims of sexual assault based on their sexual orientation. The low rates of reporting of
violence is due for fear of being outed and subject of harassment. "Don't ask, don't tell force military LGBT to hide their
sexual orientation. Over the past year, Congress revoked this policy. It allows members of army to express openly their sexual
identity. Today the Department of Defense recognize same–sex marriage. Different groups such as SPART*A work not only to
facilitate integration of LGBT person in different service of US army but also to exempt religious beliefs in the army. These
organizations fight for integration of transgender persons in the army. They also work to get heath care coverage and

Human Rights Abuses for the LGBT Community in Russia
This paper addresses human rights abuses against members of the LGBT community in Russia. The LGBT community has
been a marginalized group of society in Russia in many ways throughout history, however the legislation that was recently
passed in Russia goes a step further to strip these individuals of their human rights and dignity. The legislation is inconsistent
with several human rights provisions in international treaties that have been ratified by Russia: International Covenant on Civil
and Political Rights (ICCPR); International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR); Convention on the
Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW); Convention Against Torture and other Cruel,
Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment (CAT); and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC); European Convention for the
Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR); and the European Convention for the Prevention of Torture
and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT). There are also several articles in Russia's own constitution which
are incompatible with current human rights abuses against the LGBT community, as well as the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights (UDHR), and the Yogyakarta Principles.
This memo takes a detailed look at this legislation in light of LGBT human rights violations in Russian history, and what
problems we might expect in the future if this law is not repealed. This memo lays out the applicable human

1. Demographics
A. There was a dramatic upsurge in same–sex couples counts between 1990 and 2000. The Census Bureau asks no questions
about sexual orientation, so same sex, unmarried partners were counted differently and more accurately in 2000. (2012 Gay
and Lesbian Demographics http://www.urban.org/toolkit/issues/gayresearchfocus.cfm)
B. "Very little is known about the lives of LGBT people because the main sources of data about people living in the US (or the
world, for that matter) do not collect sexual orientation data." (gaydata.org)
C. 3.80% LGBTQ (approximately 9 million people) 1.70% lesbian/gay 1.80% bi–sexual .30% transgender (2010 US Census)
D. The national average of LGBT by state was 3.5%, with the highest being in D.C. at 10% and the lowest being in North
Dakota with 1.7%. California 's average was 4.0%.
2. Violence
A. Anti–LGBT violence in 2013 had a total of 2001incidents reported, with a substantial increase in severity of violence
reported. (NCAVP, May 2014)
B. LGBT persons were 1.7 times more likely to be injured and 2 times more likely to require medical attention as a result of
hate violence than heterosexuals. (NCAVP, May 2014)
C. There has been a 13% increase in hate crimes against LGBT people between 2010–2011, with 1.7% of hate crimes being

Religion Based Laws And Islamic Law Essay
In much of Northern Africa (e.g. Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya), Islamic law exists as the foundation of these
regional countries. Within many of these predominantly Islamic African nations, political law and Islamic law intertwine. With
this being said, all homosexual conduct is criminalized in Northern countries such as Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and
Libya. "Morality laws," which are religion–based laws, tremendously limit the freedom of expression of LGBT individuals
("Sexual Orientation Laws In The World – Overview"). People are detained for infraction of Islamic values. They are often
harassed, arrested, and tortured (e.g. whipped, beaten, burned) whether for a confession or simply as punishment. There is no
regulatory order of conduct for these police operations, as it is simply stated that they are to defend their countries ' cultural
values (In a Time of Torture). With the unjust enforcement of brutal social control upon civilians, one can begin to understand
the obstacles of participation in the African LGBT Rights Movement. Especially in countries where the law not only excludes
the protection of LGBT individuals, but outrightly condemns it, little to no public participation in the movement is observed.
As previously noted, 38 of 54 African countries criminalize homosexuality. While the penal code of African countries
commonly entails imprisonment for a variable amount of years (up to life term), in some countries, the death penalty is

The New Laws Protecting Lgbt Community
"If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door."– Harvey Milk. Through time the LGBT
community has not been treated with the rights that they deserve. They have not been able to express themselves the way most
people are able too. Society has started to accept the LGBT community and give them rights. The new laws protecting LGBT
community are affecting society by giving the LGBT community acceptance, preventing violence, and reducing the amount of
discrimination.
In the 1900's gay people were not recognized (Watson). Around the 1950's is when it became more noticed but, the LGBT
community had no rights (Watson). LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transexual. In the 1950's traditional values
were more popular. Not many openly gay people worked in the government. There were gay people working in the
government ,but they were what is know as "in the closet" or not openly gay. During this time organizations started to form.
One of the first organizations was in Los Angeles by Harry Hay called the Mattachine Society ('Gay"). It was the first big
groups in United States. The big movement that started the protesting was the stonewall riot. In the 1970's gay organizations
grew in size, strength, and success because of the growing acceptance in society. The democratic party became to take part
with the gay activists in 1980 ("Gay"). They encouraged people to come out and run for political elections. Over time the

Hate Crime Find Origins in Sexual Preferences Hate crimes occur all over the world today. Hate crime is a crime, usually
violent, motivated by prejudice or intolerance towards an individual's national origin, ethnicity, color, religion, gender, gender
identity, sexual orientation, or disability. It has exacerbated in the past few years. The sexual orientation of a person can cause
them to a specific target because of their lifestyle and choices. There also, different types of violence used against a LGBT

Most can have problems finding some where to stay. Because LGBT persons often have great difficulty finding shelters that
accept and respect them. Transgender people are often forced to classify themselves as a gender with which they do not
identify. These individuals are particularly at physical risk in shelters. This risk comes from a lack of acceptance. Ex.
Transgender women (born with male genitalia but identify and live as women) forced to take shelter with heterosexual men
are frequently subjected to verbal, physical, and sexual abuse. Transgender individuals are often turned away from shelters and
in some cases signs have been posted barring their entrance. (American Journal of Public Health, 2002) In some cases, suicide
rates of LGBT people have escaladed in the past few years of feeling neglected. Suicide attempts by LGB youth and
questioning youth are 4 to 6 times more likely to result in injury, poisoning, or overdose that requires treatment from a doctor
or nurse, compared to their straight peers. (CDC, 2011) The STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) is growing among LGBT
groups also. It is another problem they are facing. STDs have been increasing among gay and bisexual men, with recent
increases in syphilis being documented across the country. In 2012, men who have sex with men (MSM) accounted for 75% of
primary and secondary syphilis cases in the United States. MSM often are diagnosed with other STDs, including Chlamydia

Discrimination Against African Americans
Discrimination has been a problem for many years, from the slaving of African Americans dating back to 1619, to the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) individuals being shot in the streets a few weeks ago. However one specific group of
people, transgendered people have been targeted for decades, yet they haven't had the mass media coverage as other
discrimination issues have. Focusing on their physical abuse, and psychological impact and the substance abuse from the
discrimination they face; I hope to highlight these issues and show that they need help fighting this discrimination as well, and

(Nuttbrock et al., 2014b) By not being able to handle what has happened to them, a lot of the transgendered community will
turn to substances to help take their mind off of what happened. This is usually done because they still fear their life or they
are terrified to get help because of being discriminated against anymore. On another related note transgender people are twice
as likely to be un–employed as those who aren't; (Keuroghlian, 2015) as this discrimination continues a lot of transgender
women decide to participate in sex work which goes along with substance use and abuse. (Keuroghlian, 2015) Transgender
women and men both have reported that they use prescription drugs illegally, binge drinking, and do illicit drugs other than
marijuana. This substance abuse that these people experience, is because our society has let them down. They go down these
dark paths of substance abuse, and depression because society has decided not to help these people and continues to allow the
discrimination and hatred of these people continue without repercussions. However they aren't alone, regardless of the fact the
transgender community faces discrimination more harshly than perhaps some others of the LGBT community. This
discrimination still exists for lesbians, gays and bisexuals as well, society as a whole needs to come together to realize that
regardless of their gender identity or their sexual orientation these individuals are people just like the rest of us. If you
wouldn't want it to happen to you, why subject someone else to this torture they face every day for just being who they

Social Injustice: the interplay of the LGBT community, hate crimes and the US On June 4, 2011, Cece Mcdonald lost the

Minneapolis when suddenly, a group of people started to barrage them with insults. One man insulted Cece directly by saying,
""look at that boy dressed like a girl tucking her dick in." The group of friends attempted to walk away, but before they got
away, CeCe was physically assaulted with a glass of alcohol and a fight quickly began. Cece attempted to run away, but was
quickly followed by the man who had insulted her earlier, Dean Schmitz. Cece turned around and in what she claimed was
self–defense, stabbed Dean with a pair of scissors. Following that, the police arrived and Cece was arrested and later, since
Dean had died, charged with second–degree murder. After the situation was investigated, there was a subsequent trial and Cece
was forced to accept a plea deal that would give her 41 months in prison to avoid a longer sentence, given that she recanted
her claim of self–defense. When the trial had concluded, Cece was put into a men's prison, a dangerous place for trans–women
to be committed, for 19 months before being released.

During the mid 1900's, New York City's queer citizens were discriminated against and faced an anti–gay system. The
Stonewall Uprisings were a set of raids and riots in the 1960's that took place for six days involving thousands of people in
Greenwich Village. They were the result of hundreds of years of discrimination and violence against gay and transgender
people in America as well as the influence of new thinkers like the writers of the "Beat Generation" who were trying to

Even though there was a change and an awareness on the LGBT community, many people still didn't accept homosexuals. Gay

Civil Rights : A Controversial Topic Across All Walks Of...
Civil Rights Assignment Since the turn of the twentieth century, civil rights has been a controversial topic across all walks of
humanity. During the nineteen hundred's, women's suffrage movement had taken place; later, from the nineteen thirties until
the nineteen sixties, African Americans pushed the United States government to produce and enact their civil rights laws;
today, rights for people of a sexual or gender orientation other than cisgender straight are being fought for. Two organizations
that are still dedicated to current civil rights would be GLAAD and NOW – National Organization for Women. If one were to
compare both GLAAD and NOW in terms of the causes they are fighting for and their history, both fight for the fairness the
LGBT community, equality, and against violence; however, GLAAD is pushing for faith and acceptance, immigration, and
marriage and family protection, while NOW is pressing the United States government for reproductive rights and justice,
economic justice, and racial justice for women. Primarily, today's civil rights movement is the right for marriage in the LGBT
community, and the largest advocate for this movement would be GLAAD, who is taking initiative behind numerous legal
battles, as well as other portrayals of activism, for the LGBT community. According to GLAAD's website, they are a taskforce
that mainly works with the media to confront inflexible issues, in order to mold and incite conversations that modify society

People may know a person who's lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender or may have at least heard of LGBT community, but

"In 2016, advocates tracked at least 23 deaths of transgender people in the United States due to fatal violence, the most ever
recorded for that year". This shows that in the year of 2016, transgender encounter the most deaths. This presents that
transgenders out of the LGBT community have a higher chance of experiencing cruelty and having to live a life where at any
given time they could be killed that no one should ever face. In addition, another example is from the Los Angeles Times

people who are transgender or gender nonconforming said they had attempted suicide some time in their lives, compared with
1.6% of the general population". This shows that the reasons for the rise of deaths of transgenders are not caused merely on
violence by people who disapprove of them, but also suicide. This displays the hardship and challenges that transgenders
overcome, that they think of other ways to live peacefully other than having to deal with all the stress by negative opinions of

The Matthew Shepard Event
The human body is an object in which one lives and the medium through which one experiences oneself and the world. The
human body vests claims on ideology and space; and thus participates as the site on which conflicts about belief systems and
territory contest violently. Gay bodies become entangled in violence when they enter into arenas that combat certain ideas.
Gay bashing illustrates incidences all in which bodies experience physical injury. In modern U.S. communities various
militant conservatives individually target homosexuals in "gay bashing." Though few conservative political groups explicitly
avow targeting gays for physical violence, their members individually carry out anti–gay brutality. Mathew ... Show more

Ironically, the word panic originates from the Greek god Pan, who was noted for causing terror. Gay panic implies that causing
terror in violence is due to forgivable bouts of misjudgment. The defense's language suggests a lack of both premeditation and
cognitive participation brought about by the unexpected fright. Sociologists use panic to refer to irrational group behaviors,
such as those arising from riot mentality. This statute barrows language from social science for the purpose of linking gay–
bashing to an academically accepted explanation for seemingly illogical group behavior. Defense attornies often argue that the
victim's sexual advancement on the defendants who are already extrememly insecure about their own heterosexual orientation
gave their precarious sanity just enough of a nudge to tip over and hence produce irrational violent behavior. The defense also
assumes that homosexuality is such a terror as to uproot even something so supposedly stable as heterosexuality. If gay–
bashing is a symptom of a mental "disease" then the defendents must be suffering patients instead of knowing criminals. By
pathologizing gay–bashing, the medical and social jargon legitimizes it through institutional recognition.

Domestic Violence And Sexual Abuse
Every year, people tune into the Super Bowl not only for the game and intermission show, but also the commercials. We look
forward to the often creative, memorable, and incredibly expensive ads that make us laugh and remember each brand and
product. This Super Bowl XLIX, however, featured many heavier, more serious commercials than usual. A story from an ex
911 operator, first posted in a thread on the popular site Reddit, was transformed into a commercial sponsored by the NFL in
response to numerous allegations of domestic abuse against current players. In it, a woman phones the police, forced to
pretend to be ordering a pizza in order to not raise suspicion from her abuser, who is in the room with her.
The creator of the commercial, No More, is an advocacy group that is working to end domestic violence and sexual abuse. On
their website, they cite the 2013 Avon Foundation for Women's NO MORE study, which found that while nearly two thirds of
Americans know a victim of domestic or sexual abuse, those two out of three Americans are still unaware of the fact, and most
likely have never even had a conversation with friends or family about it.
No More's Super Bowl commercial is a big step forward – there have not been many, if any, advertisements about domestic
and sexual violence broadcast to such a large audience. It helps to illustrate one of the hardest struggles those being abused

The Importance Of The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) focuses on human rights. One human right that is important and should
be justified with the UDHR is discrimination based on sexual orientation and hate crimes towards those that identify
themselves differently from others. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community is a growing
community. Underneath the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), it mentions the right to protect the lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Members of this community are often discriminated against based on their
sexual orientation and transgender identities. This is often due to their beliefs, sexual orientation, and gender identities like
identifying themselves as gay or transgendered. Discrimination of these individuals result in hate crimes and criminal justice
system getting involved. The human rights of individuals that are categorized as apart of the LGBT community should be
protected and not be penalized. The legal obligations of the United States and Algeria should respect human rights regarding
the community, and those rights should be safeguarded. Human rights are an essential aspect for all human beings no matter
what their sexual orientation or gender identities are. Just because you identify yourself differently, doesn't mean an individual

Rights Violations The issue discussed in the article violates many Human Rights. Specifically, Articles 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 16, and 19

Human Rights Violations
Many people don't have the privilege of living a life where they can take advantage of their human rights and feel secure. All
around the world human rights violation occur on a daily basis and many people aren't aware of the struggles other people in
other countries go through or people disregard these violations. In the Central African Republic, women and girls are used as
sexual slaves, are being raped and beaten as a weapon of war between the Seleka and anti–balaka. Another instance of, human
rights violation is that in Egypt many people are being imprisoned for supporting and or being part of the Lgbt campaign. In
these two countries, human rights are being neglected and people aren't treated and disregarded as humans.
In the Central African Republic, women and girls between the ages of 10 and 75 are being raped, kidnapped, and used as
sexual slaves as a tactic of war by the Muslim Seleka and the Christian and animist militia called anti–balaka from early 2013
to mid–2017. According to the article "They said we are their Slaves" by Smita Sharma it discusses that in some cases of
sexual slavery the Seleka or anti–Balaka committed sexual violence and exerted ownership over victims, women or girls who

According to the National Taskforce for Transgender Equality, 40% of transgender individuals are unemployed. There are
many varying explanations for this number and often, people cite a hatred for the transgender community as reason for the
high rates of unemployment. This number is startling, and it might be even more startling to find that only 16 states protect the
employment of transgender individuals, meaning that the vast majority of states do not have measures already in place to
protect transgender individuals from being fired for being themselves. Studies have shown that most people believe that there
are already many laws in place concerning the treatment of LGBT persons in the workforce, but the truth is that there are no
such laws in most states and, according to how ENDA has been voted upon in the past, there are those who believe that no
such laws are necessary. While there is a growing need for ENDA, there is also a growing need for the bill to be more
inclusive. Two separate times, ENDA has been revised to remove the gender identity clause from the original document. Both
times the bill was more widely accepted in congress, but garnered more opposition from the LGBT community. Along with the

Lgbt Rights History Essay

  • 1. Lgbt Rights History Essay LGBT Rights Throughout History Looking back throughout history at the rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender individuals, it isn't hard to see that we have made the majority of our strides in the past 10 years. As a society we have decided the time is now to put an end to the lack of rights for people of different sexual orientations. Accepting LGBT individuals and providing them the same rights and protections as all other Americans makes us a more united, respectable Country. Everyone deserves equal treatment and opportunities regardless of what their sexual orientation may be. Prior to the Stonewall riots, LGBT individuals were widely discriminated against and regularly denied access into the most common places. Places they could ... Committee: GA3 – The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee Issue: The prevention of violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity Student Officer: Sarah Lim Position: Chair of the Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee ________________________________________ Introduction: Gender identity and sexual orientation is one of the more stigmatized and marginalized aspects of self–expression for any human in our society today. A state or country with a more liberal take on the expression of gender identity and sexual orientation tends to be more prosperous, in terms of happiness, simply because people can freely be themselves and be with their loved ones without fear of persecution, discrimination or even ... Biological sex: The physiological attributes, which determine whether a person is male, female or intersex based on anatomy, chromosomes and hormones. Gender expression: the ways in which a person expresses their gender identity by manifesting masculinity, femininity, both or neither through behavior, appearances, preferences and more. Topic Summary/Overview Before further investigation it is important to keep in mind that the LGBT community usually faces discrimination in terms of job opportunities, income, access to basic healthcare, legal recognition of same sex partners etc. however, one of the more serious difficulties the LGBT community faces would be exposure to violence and discrimination simply due to their identity and orientation. This may occur due to one's state and judicial system or in terms of hate crimes encouraged by an anti–LGBT community along with prejudicial ties in religion and culture Often so prejudice against the LGBT community is caused by the stigmatization of homosexuality, which had previously been labeled as a mental illness, or an ailment of one's spirit, as well as having to be strongly correlated towards AIDs due to past events. Therefore the more traditional general public sees people of the LGBT community, as well as their efforts to achieve their rights, as a threat to ones values ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Lgbt, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Community Essay Ariana Amaro Jesus Naranjo Jovanny Martinez Monica Acevedo LGBT The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community have been the victims of discrimination and prejudice since the Post War Period. Although it is not documented, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender relationships have existed in many different cultures for many years. However, this community was not accepted which created a state of secrecy and shame among them. The LGBT community has had many obstacles preventing them from feeling like a complete part of their communities. Throughout history, LGBT individuals have been portrayed in society as inferior compared to the heterosexual society that exists. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals were considered mentally defective and/or morally dissolute by 75% of the population, and a little more than 20% were unsure. (Underwood, Alice, 43) The sense of inferiority towards LGBT stirred up several issues in society and in the politics. They have been denied access in the military, had health care limitations, and have been a prime target in the issue with aids. Over the years there has been increased violence and discrimination towards those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. In modern times, relations have slowly began to change and LGBTs have been accepted by many. The LGBT movement sparked and has made a lot of progress over the years. Do you think LGBT should have the same facilities like a man and woman in our society? You might think what is LGBT? LGBT stand for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. LGBT existed in American society since the 17th century. It has have been a big issue since then. In 1958, in Inc. v. Olesen US supreme court first rules in favor of LGBT. They were not safe and protected in American society, even after the civil war. Since 1865, LGBT has not realized the full protections of the 14th amendment. They were not getting full protections of the 14th amendment because people in our society didn 't want to give them equal rights like others and see them differently. When ... When they went to police with their problems, they were harassed by police. The article The Evolution of a Revolution: From Demonstration to Celebrate – The Birth of Pride by Shamey Cramer support this claim. In that article, In 1970, Howard Efland, a gay man, who was brutally murdered by members of the Los Angeles Police Department because he was found in a hotel where gay people have sex. Cramer wrote in this article that "Witnesses stated that when the police raided the place, they beat him, dragged him down the hall, naked, bleeding and screaming. Then they threw him into the back of the police wagon." This evidence showed police were handling LGBT's issue with more force than necessary and they did not treat them fairly. This was mistreatment because when police found that out they started violence without talking people in that hotel. Police should not beat people to dead in first chance. They faced horrible violence from police. This source has some weaknesses This author only talk about bad things about LAPD, the author didn't put more attention on the fact that it was a hotel where gay people had sex and all the witness were from that hotel. Domestic violence is prominent in a homosexual relationship, if not more so than in a heterosexual relationship (White & Goldberg, 2006). Domestic violence is also associated with intimate partner violence (IPV) (Dunne, 2014). Statistically, domestic violence rates are higher than heterosexual domestic violence with IPV (Fox, 2010). • 11. Importance Of The LGBT Community Why the LGBT community should be treated equally The LGBT community has been around for centuries, although there was never an official name for the community before the 1980s, outside of slurs, people have always identified outside of the "norm." From about 1988, activists began to use the initialism 'LGBT' in the United States. Despite the fact that LGBT does not nominally encompass all individuals in smaller communities (pansexual, nonbinary, agender, etc.) the term is generally accepted to include those not specifically identified in the four–letter initialism (Shankle). According to LGBT, the first documented gay rights organization was founded by Henry Gerber. Gerber founded the "The Society for Human Rights" in Chicago, Illinois in 1924. The fight for LGBT rights has been a long and hard road and it will never end as long as the community is seen as inferior by straight and cisgendered people. Marriage equality was a huge step in progress for same sex couples but that doesn't mean queer people are still equally respected in today's society. The three main discriminatory actions taken against LGBT Americans have been violence, employment discrimination, and inaccessible health care. Violence towards members of the community has always been a huge issue. Lesbian, gay and transgender people, especially those of color, experience violence at disproportionately high rates compared to straight cisgender people. • 13. The Importance Of Equality In The Same Sex Community On June 2015, same sex marriage was declared legal across the nation. The reason that #lovewins became a movement was because for years same – sex couples in many states were denied Marriage. ( Adam Liptak,2015) The purpose of this online social movement was to shed light on the need of equality in the the same sex community because the same sex community are still being treated unfair. The same sex community is also known as the LGBT community stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and along with heterosexual(lgbt.ie). There were many Past issues on homosexuals being treated unfair, for example, police harassment, History.com stated that on June 28 1969 in New York the Stonewall riots were taking place. Later in the night a little after three a.m., police raided Stonewall Inn, a gay nightclub, which then turned into a riot protested by homosexuals. Even though the police had a reason to raid their nightclubs , for serving liquor without a liquor license. New york's gay community had gotten tired of the law enforcement targeting gay clubs, many of which that have been closed. The rioters then began to throw bottles at the police and made their way into the neighborhood streets of new York, the riot didn't end until the police called in their riot police. The riot was then followed by continuous days of demonstrations in New York and also was the reason for the start of a formation of the Gay Liberation Front as well as other same sex and bisexual civil rights ... With these numbers on the rise, homicide rates regarding LGBT people in the last five–seven years appear to be climbing and staying that way. Because of these statistics that are increasing every day, it is crucial that protection laws be put in place for the benefit of LGBT people. The United States is no stranger to hate crimes. With years worth of civil rights movements, is it any surprise that the LGBT community is now looking for their own validation? Homicides have been on the rise with LGBT people the main targets. • 19. Hate Crimes: A Qualitative Study Victimization of LGBT community members is elevating as time passes. Researchers attempt to determine the prevalence of the violence committed against members of the LGBT community (Rothman, Exner, & Baughman, 2011). Many people that identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender that are victims of hate crimes have participated in studies where they insist that the crimes committed against them are based on their sexuality; not class, color, gender, or any other factor. In a qualitative study, Meyer (2009) conducted open–ended interviews with people who were victims of hate crimes. The participants were recruited at LGBT advocacy organizations. Schott, Holland, and Mathews (2009), reveals that students who go directly from high school to college experience multiple cycles of (re)socialization. Many hate crimes are committed against college students because this is usually when college students begin their "coming out" process. Most research is done based on the attitudes of students toward their peers with an alternative choice of sexuality. Their research was based on classification in a relatively diverse college setting. Younger students, freshman and sophomores are less likely to be open to the idea of homosexuality. Students of this age group are more likely still in the process of being (re)socialized and are still dependent on what is instilled in them by their guardians prior to going to college. This attitude is one that leads to hate crimes. Older students, juniors and seniors, have a higher tolerance for the alternative lifestyle for they have become adapted to the idea of people being different (Schott, Holland, & Mathews ... • 23. Persuasive Essay On LGBT Rights The LGBT community has made progress towards gaining more rights in recent years, although it has been an uphill battle. In the past year alone LGBT marriage has been legalized in Australia, Malta, and Germany, with the legalization of LGBT marriage in the U.S. in 2015 also being a resounding success. In addition, LGBT rights have also become a greater discussion topic in households, radio shows, and broadcasts around the world. However, while a lot of progress has been made, LGBT individuals and their allies are still struggling for the basic human rights they deserve. Discrimination feels like a relic of the past––something Americans struggled against and that was outlawed in the 1960s. But this was not the case for LGBT individuals. Today, in America, land of the free and the home of the brave, a lesbian can be fired simply for being gay. A gay couple can be refused a wedding cake for the most important day in their life. A gay couple could be refused their right to adopt a child. Much of this discrimination is chalked up to a concept called "religious freedom." Religious freedom is the right to deny service based on the idea that it conflicts with the business owner's religious beliefs, and has been used most recently to defend discrimination against LGBT people. The world has heard this argument many times before. According to the LA Times, "1960s...a small chain of barbecue restaurants in South Carolina, said that its owner's freedom of religion would be violated if ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Violence Against Racialized Groups, Women, And The Lgbt... The social problem that I will be discussing in this paper will be violence. Specifically the violence against racialized groups, women, and the LGBT community. Violence is directly linked with poverty, as the poorest neighborhoods tend to have the highest crime rate. The groups most likely to be at risk for victimization tend to be poor people, for instance countless indigenous women are victimized. "In Saskatchewan, Indigenous women equal to 6 percent of the population, yet account for 60 percent of its missing women"(PowerPoint presentation, Violence). Indigenous women are extremely poor and that's relevant, as the majorities are sex workers– these sex workers face horrific tragedies as violence against them is at an alarmingly high level. Canada has criminalized sex workers and that has led to increased violence by cause of law enforcement giving extra attention to the illegal sexual transaction. Furthermore with higher police surveillance, the state further perpetuates this social problem due to the fact that police officers are responsible for a large portion of the violence against sex workers, which tends to be intentional. Women tend to be victimized greater than men (do not know if it is because men never report sexual abuse) and a large number of their troubles are overlapped which is called intersectionality. Specifically, poor indigenous women are more likely to be a victim of violence than a rich white woman. The state further perpetuates violence against ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It takes no survey to remove repression" (Milk). The regulation of LGBT* discrimination in various environments varies by jurisdiction. Many states have established rules that prohibit bias in hiring, promotion, job assignment, termination, compensation and general harassment based on sexual orientation. However, very few of these protections extend to cover sexual identity. The repercussions of these limited protections surfaced from the very beginning in the form of discrimination, attacks and abuse of LGBT* citizens. In fact, over half of US workers in today's labor force work in a state where it is perfectly legal to fire someone or refuse them employment based on their gender or sexual orientation. Society likes to pretend as though these violent attacks have lessened through the years, though the truth of the matter is that, over the last ten years, though hate crimes in general have gone down, the percentage of hate crime victims targeted based on sexual orientation or gender is on the rise. Many incredible activists have made monumental attempts at understanding the nature of these hate crimes and this discrimination in modern America. There will never be an understanding of why does some people choose to be homophobic. There is history of LGBT violence. It all had started back as far as the 1930's during the Holocaust. But one of the foulest murders of LGBT people in the U.S. was in the arson fire at the Upstairs Lounge, a New Orleans gay bar, June 24, 1973. Within many of these predominantly Islamic African nations, political law and Islamic law intertwine. With this being said, all homosexual conduct is criminalized in Northern countries such as Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. "Morality laws," which are religion–based laws, tremendously limit the freedom of expression of LGBT individuals ("Sexual Orientation Laws In The World – Overview"). People are detained for infraction of Islamic values. They are often harassed, arrested, and tortured (e.g. whipped, beaten, burned) whether for a confession or simply as punishment. There is no regulatory order of conduct for these police operations, as it is simply stated that they are to defend their countries ' cultural values (In a Time of Torture). With the unjust enforcement of brutal social control upon civilians, one can begin to understand the obstacles of participation in the African LGBT Rights Movement. Especially in countries where the law not only excludes the protection of LGBT individuals, but outrightly condemns it, little to no public participation in the movement is observed. This is usually done because they still fear their life or they are terrified to get help because of being discriminated against anymore. On another related note transgender people are twice as likely to be un–employed as those who aren't; (Keuroghlian, 2015) as this discrimination continues a lot of transgender women decide to participate in sex work which goes along with substance use and abuse. (Keuroghlian, 2015) Transgender women and men both have reported that they use prescription drugs illegally, binge drinking, and do illicit drugs other than marijuana. This substance abuse that these people experience, is because our society has let them down. They go down these dark paths of substance abuse, and depression because society has decided not to help these people and continues to allow the discrimination and hatred of these people continue without repercussions. However they aren't alone, regardless of the fact the transgender community faces discrimination more harshly than perhaps some others of the LGBT community. This discrimination still exists for lesbians, gays and bisexuals as well, society as a whole needs to come together to realize that regardless of their gender identity or their sexual orientation these individuals are people just like the rest of us. If you wouldn't want it to happen to you, why subject someone else to this torture they face every day for just being who they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Social Injustice : The Interplay Of The Lgbt Community,... Social Injustice: the interplay of the LGBT community, hate crimes and the US On June 4, 2011, Cece Mcdonald lost the freedom to securely be herself. Cece Mcdonald was a young trans–woman who was walking with her friends past a tavern in Minneapolis when suddenly, a group of people started to barrage them with insults. One man insulted Cece directly by saying, ""look at that boy dressed like a girl tucking her dick in." The group of friends attempted to walk away, but before they got away, CeCe was physically assaulted with a glass of alcohol and a fight quickly began. Cece attempted to run away, but was quickly followed by the man who had insulted her earlier, Dean Schmitz. Cece turned around and in what she claimed was self–defense, stabbed Dean with a pair of scissors. Following that, the police arrived and Cece was arrested and later, since Dean had died, charged with second–degree murder. After the situation was investigated, there was a subsequent trial and Cece was forced to accept a plea deal that would give her 41 months in prison to avoid a longer sentence, given that she recanted her claim of self–defense. When the trial had concluded, Cece was put into a men's prison, a dangerous place for trans–women to be committed, for 19 months before being released. Cece's assault was one of thousands of hate crimes (violence towards a person based on race, sex, sexual orientation, sexual identity, etc.) that were committed in 2011 – of which about ... • 61. Stonewall Uprisings During the mid 1900's, New York City's queer citizens were discriminated against and faced an anti–gay system. The Stonewall Uprisings were a set of raids and riots in the 1960's that took place for six days involving thousands of people in Greenwich Village. They were the result of hundreds of years of discrimination and violence against gay and transgender people in America as well as the influence of new thinkers like the writers of the "Beat Generation" who were trying to express their individuality and unconventional thinking. Because of this movement, gay liberation and the fight for modern LGBT rights in the United States changed. Activist groups formed and were inspired to find safe places for them to express their sexual orientation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though there was a change and an awareness on the LGBT community, many people still didn't accept homosexuals. Gay individuals still faced discrimination, verbal abuse and physical violence. In 2011, the Marriage Equality Act which legalized same–sex marriage for New York residents, was signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, making New York the 6th state to legalize same–sex marriage. • 63. Civil Rights : A Controversial Topic Across All Walks Of... Civil Rights Assignment Since the turn of the twentieth century, civil rights has been a controversial topic across all walks of humanity. During the nineteen hundred's, women's suffrage movement had taken place; later, from the nineteen thirties until the nineteen sixties, African Americans pushed the United States government to produce and enact their civil rights laws; today, rights for people of a sexual or gender orientation other than cisgender straight are being fought for. Two organizations that are still dedicated to current civil rights would be GLAAD and NOW – National Organization for Women. If one were to compare both GLAAD and NOW in terms of the causes they are fighting for and their history, both fight for the fairness the LGBT community, equality, and against violence; however, GLAAD is pushing for faith and acceptance, immigration, and marriage and family protection, while NOW is pressing the United States government for reproductive rights and justice, economic justice, and racial justice for women. Primarily, today's civil rights movement is the right for marriage in the LGBT community, and the largest advocate for this movement would be GLAAD, who is taking initiative behind numerous legal battles, as well as other portrayals of activism, for the LGBT community. According to GLAAD's website, they are a taskforce that mainly works with the media to confront inflexible issues, in order to mold and incite conversations that modify society ("About ... Lgbt Rights In America Pros And Cons People may know a person who's lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender or may have at least heard of LGBT community, but many don't know about the bad side of the things that happens to these people. Many LGBTs experience limitation in their rights as Americans for being true to themselves. In the article, "LGBT Equality & Civil Rights", it states, "Throughout its history, America has symbolized equality of opportunity for people of all races, origins, religions and creeds, serving as a beacon of hope for anyone seeking a better life. However, despite its founding principles of equality and acceptance, the United States also has a long history of denying basic rights to certain people." For example is, in the article, "Violence Against the Transgender Community 2017" by the Human Rights Campaign, it states, "In 2016, advocates tracked at least 23 deaths of transgender people in the United States due to fatal violence, the most ever recorded for that year". This shows that in the year of 2016, transgender encounter the most deaths. This presents that transgenders out of the LGBT community have a higher chance of experiencing cruelty and having to live a life where at any given time they could be killed that no one should ever face. In addition, another example is from the Los Angeles Times "Transgender issues: 7 things to know about LGBT movement's next frontier", it says, "According to the 2011 survey, 41% people who are transgender or gender nonconforming said they had attempted suicide some time in their lives, compared with 1.6% of the general population". This shows that the reasons for the rise of deaths of transgenders are not caused merely on violence by people who disapprove of them, but also suicide. This displays the hardship and challenges that transgenders overcome, that they think of other ways to live peacefully other than having to deal with all the stress by negative opinions of ... • 67. Essay The Matthew Shepard Event The Matthew Shepard Event The human body is an object in which one lives and the medium through which one experiences oneself and the world. The human body vests claims on ideology and space; and thus participates as the site on which conflicts about belief systems and territory contest violently. Gay bodies become entangled in violence when they enter into arenas that combat certain ideas. Gay bashing illustrates incidences all in which bodies experience physical injury. In modern U.S. communities various militant conservatives individually target homosexuals in "gay bashing." Though few conservative political groups explicitly avow targeting gays for physical violence, their members individually carry out anti–gay brutality. Mathew ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ironically, the word panic originates from the Greek god Pan, who was noted for causing terror. Gay panic implies that causing terror in violence is due to forgivable bouts of misjudgment. The defense's language suggests a lack of both premeditation and cognitive participation brought about by the unexpected fright. Sociologists use panic to refer to irrational group behaviors, such as those arising from riot mentality. This statute barrows language from social science for the purpose of linking gay– bashing to an academically accepted explanation for seemingly illogical group behavior. Defense attornies often argue that the victim's sexual advancement on the defendants who are already extrememly insecure about their own heterosexual orientation gave their precarious sanity just enough of a nudge to tip over and hence produce irrational violent behavior. The defense also assumes that homosexuality is such a terror as to uproot even something so supposedly stable as heterosexuality. If gay– bashing is a symptom of a mental "disease" then the defendents must be suffering patients instead of knowing criminals. By pathologizing gay–bashing, the medical and social jargon legitimizes it through institutional recognition. To facilitate exploring a specific anti–gay defense, I locate this statute within its homophobic political ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Domestic Violence And Sexual Abuse Every year, people tune into the Super Bowl not only for the game and intermission show, but also the commercials. We look forward to the often creative, memorable, and incredibly expensive ads that make us laugh and remember each brand and product. This Super Bowl XLIX, however, featured many heavier, more serious commercials than usual. A story from an ex 911 operator, first posted in a thread on the popular site Reddit, was transformed into a commercial sponsored by the NFL in response to numerous allegations of domestic abuse against current players. In it, a woman phones the police, forced to pretend to be ordering a pizza in order to not raise suspicion from her abuser, who is in the room with her. The creator of the commercial, No More, is an advocacy group that is working to end domestic violence and sexual abuse. On their website, they cite the 2013 Avon Foundation for Women's NO MORE study, which found that while nearly two thirds of Americans know a victim of domestic or sexual abuse, those two out of three Americans are still unaware of the fact, and most likely have never even had a conversation with friends or family about it. No More's Super Bowl commercial is a big step forward – there have not been many, if any, advertisements about domestic and sexual violence broadcast to such a large audience. It helps to illustrate one of the hardest struggles those being abused suffer. Those who have no personal experience are able to see exactly how hard it is for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. The Importance Of The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) focuses on human rights. One human right that is important and should be justified with the UDHR is discrimination based on sexual orientation and hate crimes towards those that identify themselves differently from others. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community is a growing community. Underneath the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), it mentions the right to protect the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Members of this community are often discriminated against based on their sexual orientation and transgender identities. This is often due to their beliefs, sexual orientation, and gender identities like identifying themselves as gay or transgendered. Discrimination of these individuals result in hate crimes and criminal justice system getting involved. The human rights of individuals that are categorized as apart of the LGBT community should be protected and not be penalized. The legal obligations of the United States and Algeria should respect human rights regarding the community, and those rights should be safeguarded. Human rights are an essential aspect for all human beings no matter what their sexual orientation or gender identities are. Just because you identify yourself differently, doesn't mean an individual human rights are different that everyone else's. The LGBT rights are human rights just like others that should equally entitle our human rights without ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is also mentioned that the government is using the uproar about LGBT+ rights to distract the public from social and economic problems. Therefore, benefiting from the suffering of hundreds, if not thousands, of people. Human Rights Violations The issue discussed in the article violates many Human Rights. Specifically, Articles 2, 3, 5, 7, 9 16, and 19 were some of the many rights or freedoms violated from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Articles 2, freedom from discrimination, 3, right to life, liberty, personal security, and 5, freedom from torture and degrading treatment, are violated because the issue involves the discrimination of a certain group of people because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Therefore, people are being arrested and given forced anal examinations which are considered degrading treatment and do not allow the people any liberty or personal security. Articles 7, right to equality before the law, and 9, freedom from arbitrary arrest and exile, are infringed because people in the LGBT+ community are being arrested unjustly since being a homosexual is legal in Egypt and the police are arresting any queer person they see. Thus, by being arrested unfairly, the queer people in Egypt are not being treated equally compared to cisgender or straight people. Article 16, the right ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

All around the world human rights violation occur on a daily basis and many people aren't aware of the struggles other people in other countries go through or people disregard these violations. In the Central African Republic, women and girls are used as sexual slaves, are being raped and beaten as a weapon of war between the Seleka and anti–balaka. Another instance of, human rights violation is that in Egypt many people are being imprisoned for supporting and or being part of the Lgbt campaign. The LGBT Community: The Need for an Anti-Discrimination Bill The need for an anti–discrimination bill for members of the LGBT community is large and the discrimination against LGBT identifying individuals extends far past the workplace and into the homes and communities. Only 11 states currently provide transgender victims with protection under hate crimes. In all other states, violent crimes against transgender individuals are prosecuted without a hate crime enhancement. Transgender individuals often find it hard to find employment and feel safe. According to the National Taskforce for Transgender Equality, 40% of transgender individuals are unemployed. There are many varying explanations for this number and often, people cite a hatred for the transgender community as reason for the high rates of unemployment. This number is startling, and it might be even more startling to find that only 16 states protect the employment of transgender individuals, meaning that the vast majority of states do not have measures already in place to protect transgender individuals from being fired for being themselves. Studies have shown that most people believe that there are already many laws in place concerning the treatment of LGBT persons in the workforce, but the truth is that there are no such laws in most states and, according to how ENDA has been voted upon in the past, there are those who believe that no such laws are necessary. While there is a growing need for ENDA, there is also a growing need for the bill to be more inclusive. Two separate times, ENDA has been revised to remove the gender identity clause from the original document. Both times the bill was more widely accepted in congress, but garnered more opposition from the LGBT community. Along with the LGBT community's opposition were groups of people that stood in opposition of the bill for different reasons. Many oppose anti–discrimination legislation on the grounds that it is not protecting freedom of speech ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
