“USES OF PLASTIC WASTES IN ROAD
CONSTRUCTION”

INTRODUCTION
 Plastic waste - hazard to the environment.
 Plastic waste - construction of flexible pavement.
WHAT IS PLASTIC
 A material that contains one or more organic
polymers of large molecular weight soild in this
finished state and at some state while
manufacturing or processing into finishing articles,
can be shaped by its flow.
OBJECTIVES
 Plastic waste helps increase the strength of the
road.
 Reducing road fatigue.
 Large amount of plastic waste is required for a
small stretch of road, the amount of waste plastic
strewn around will definitely reduce.

 Thermosets
 Elastomers
 Thermoplastics
BASIC PROCESSES
 Segregation
 Cleaning process
 Shredding process
 Collection process
BASIC PROCESSES
 Segregation :-
 Plastic waste collected from various sources must
be separated from other waste.
 Maximum thickness of 60 microns.
BASIC PROCESSES
 Cleaning process-
 Plastic waste get cleaned and dried.
BASIC PROCESSES
 Shredding process-
 Will be shredded or cut into small piece.
 The different of plastic wastes are mixed together
BASIC PROCESSES
 Collection process
 The plastic waste retaining in 2.36mm is collected.
ADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC ROAD
 Use higher percentage of plastic waste.
 Reduce the need of bitumen by around 10%
 Increase the strength and performance of the road.
 Reduce the cost to around Rs. 5000/km of single
lane road.
 Generate jobs for rag pickers.
 Develop a technology, which is eco-friendly.
 A lightweight prefabricated construction.
 Faster construction and less maintenance time.
 Higher quality and a longer lifespan.

 Plastic roads consist of
6-8 percent plastic
 The construction of
every kilometer of road
required one tonne of
plastic waste this
means for every
kilometer of road, one
tonne bitumen is saved,
which costs about Rs.
30,000
 Bitumen road consist
92-94 percent bitumen
 The construction of
every kilometer of road
required nine tonne of
plastic waste

MATERIALS:-
 Bitumen:-The binder utilized in this study is one
type of neat asphalt binder graded
60/70penetration.
 Aggregate :- The fine and course aggregate
utilized in this study was obtained from quarries in
south of Vietnam.
 Plastic :- The waste plastic polythene bags we are
going to use in this project which having thickness
less than 0.5 micron
NECESSITY:-
 Disposal of waste plastic is a major problem.
 It is non-biodegradable.
 Burning of these waste plastic bags causes
environment pollution.
 It mainly consists of low-density polyethylene.
 To find its utility in bituminous mixes for road
construction.
 Laboratory performance studies were conducted on
bituminous mixes.
 Laboratory studies proved that waste plastic
enhances the property of the mix.
 Improvement in properties of bituminous mix provides
the solution for disposal in an useful way.
CONCLUSION
 Plastic will increase the melting point of the bitumen
 Use of the innovative technology not only
strengthened the road construction but also
increased the road life
 Help to improve the environment
 Plastic road would be a boon for India’s hot and
extremely humid climate where durable and eco-
friendly roads which will relive the earth form all
type of plastic waste

NECESSITY:-  Disposal of waste plastic is a major problem.  It is non-biodegradable.  Burning of these waste plastic bags causes environment pollution.  It mainly consists of low-density polyethylene.  To find its utility in bituminous mixes for road construction.  Laboratory performance studies were conducted on bituminous mixes.  Laboratory studies proved that waste plastic enhances the property of the mix.  Improvement in properties of bituminous mix provides the solution for disposal in an useful way.
