4. :: INTRODUCTION ::
Plastic use in road construction is not new.
Recent studies in this direction have shoun some hope in terms of using
Plastic waste in road construction i.e; plastic road pavements.
Plastic roads mainly use plastic carry bags, disposal cups and plastic bottles
from garbage dump as an important ingredient in road construction
materials.
When mixed with hot bitumen , plastic melt to form an only coat over the
aggregate and mimixture is laid on the road surface like a normal tar road
5. • WHAT IS PLASTIC ?
A material that contains one or more organic
polymers of large molecular weight , solid in its
finished state and at some state while
manufacturing or proccessing into finished
articles , can be shaped by its flow.
13. 1. DRY PROCESS
Plastic waste like bags, Bottles etc are cut into a size between
2.36mm and 4.75mm using shredding machine
The aggregate mix is heatad to 170 degree celcius and then it is
transferred to mixing chamber.
Simlarly the bitumen is to be heated upto to a maximum of 160
degree celcius.
At the maxing chamber, the shedded plastic waste is added over
the hot aggregate.
The plastic waste coated aggregate is mixed with hot bitumen.
14. 2.WETPROCESS
In this process waste plastic is directly mixing with hot
bitumen at 160 degree celcius.
Mechanical stirrer is needed.
Since the process requrire a lot of investment and bigger
plants so it is not commonly used.
15. 1. Use higher percentage of plastic waste.
2. Reduce the need of bitumen by 10 percent.
3. Increase the strength and perfamance of the road.
4. Reduce the cost to around RS- 5000/ KM of single lane road .
5. Generate jobs for rag pickers.
6. Develop a trchnology which is eco-friendly.
7. Improvement in fatigure life of road.
8. Better resistance towards rain water and colds weather.
ADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC ROAD
16. DISADVANTAGES OF PLASTIC ROAD
During the cleaning process ,
toxic present in the co-mingled
plastic waste would start leaching.
During the road laying process,
the presence of chlorine will definitely
release noxious HCL gas.
17. PLASTIC ROAD IN INDIA
Chennai was the first cities globally to adapt
the technology in a big way when the municipality
commissioned 1000km of plastic road in 2004.
Since then all major municipalities in india have experiented
with technology including pune, Mumbai, Surat , Delhi etc
. Plastic road.
18. CONCLUSION
Use of innovative technology not only strengthened the road
construction but also increase the road life.
Help to improve the environment
Plastic road would be a boon for India’s hot and extremely humid
climate where durable and ecofriendly roads which will relive the earth
from all type of plastic waste.
Road laid with plastic waste mix are founde to be better thane the
conventional ones.
Plastic will increase the metting point of the bitumen.
Rain water will not seep through because of the plastic in the tar. So
this technology will result in iesser road repair.
