This presentation explains different web tools/ platforms and their implication in Research and Scholarly Communication Cycle. The steps of scholarly communication cycle is like below.
1.Literature Search to find existing Research
2. Evaluation of Literature sources to select quality research literature
3. Managing/Organising documents using citation Management tools.
4. Selection of Appropriate Sources to publish the Research work.
5. Managing Research Profiles of researcher and promoting the use of altmetrics
6. Showcasing and maximizing discovery of institutional research output by self archiving.

2. ACRL scholarly communication as "the system
through which research and other scholarly writings
are created, evaluated for quality, disseminated to
the scholarly community, and preserved for future
use.
The system includes both formal means of
communication, such as publication in peer-
reviewed journals, and informal channels, such as
social networking sites, research networks etc.
Scholarly communication is frequently defined or
depicted as a lifecycle documenting the steps
involved in the creation, publication,
dissemination and discovery of a piece of
scholarly research.

23. Predatory Journals
Alumni Knowledge Sharing Series, Department
of Library & Information Science, Sambalpur
University
A predatory publisher is an opportunistic publishing venue
that exploits the academic need to publish.
Their primary goal is to make money (i.e. there will be
fees). There is no or fake peer review process
They do not care about the quality of the work published
(i.e. no or little editing or peer-review).
They make false claims or promises (i.e. claims of impact
factors and indexing).

24. Open access publications
Alumni Knowledge Sharing Series, Department
of Library & Information Science, Sambalpur
University
A paper published via an open access (OA) route
means that research literature is free-to-view by
anyone in the world via the internet, and hence will
get more visibility
Gold and Green Route of Open access Publishing
The green way to Open Access publishing is to publish an article in a
traditional subscription journal (not Open Access). After publication a
version of the article is also allowed to upload in an Open Access
institutional repository (open publication database).
In a gold open access journal all publications are freely accessible to
readers via open access journals. In this open access model APC or
‘article processing charges’ (APCs) are demanded from
authors/Authors institution. This variant of open access is generally
referred to as full gold open access or pure gold open access

30. Calculating H-index and i10-Index
Alumni Knowledge Sharing Series, Department
of Library & Information Science, Sambalpur
University
h-index measures both the productivity and citation impact
of the publications of a scientist or scholar.
The h-index is defined as the maximum value of h such that
the given author/journal has published h papers that have
each been cited at least h times.
i10-Index = the number of publications with at least 10
citations.

Managing Research Profiles of
researcher and promoting the use of
altmetrics
Altmetrics is the study and use of non-traditional
scholarly impact measures that are based on
activity in web-based environments.
38. Bibliometrics Vrs Altmetrics
Bibliometrics Altmetrics
Alumni Knowledge Sharing Series, Department
of Library & Information Science, Sambalpur
University
Citation metrics’ and
‘impact factor are solely
based on ‘citation’
Data sources are
limited: Web of Science
(ISI-Thomson Reuters),
Scopus (Elsevier) and
Google Scholar.
Do not count research
impact of posters, data
sets and working
papers, Policy
Documents etc
Citations may took
longer time/years to
occur.
Altmetrics is the study of
new metrics for analyzing
and informing scholarship
based on the social web.
Real-time, immediate
feedback on attention to
scholarly content, provides a
more coherent
understanding of research
attention.
Give credit for research
outputs other than articles,
track attention to a broad
range of research outputs,
including articles, posters,
data sets and working
papers, code, Policy
Documents etc
39. Altmetrics
Alumni Knowledge Sharing Series, Department
of Library & Information Science, Sambalpur
University
To complement, not replace the traditional
metrics;
Help people understand how research is being
received and used, and by whom;
Funding Agencies may want to see broader”
picture of engagement;
Altmetrics data on articles includes views,
citations, save, discussions and
recommendation etc.
40. Service Providers of Altmetrics
Alumni Knowledge Sharing Series, Department
of Library & Information Science, Sambalpur
University
Public Library of Science (PLOS): The open
access publisher Public Library of Science (PLOS) was
the first organization to routinely provide Altmetrics on a
large number of scholarly articles published on its own
publishing platform.
PLOS currently provides usage data, citations and
social web activity from 13 different data sources.
Impactstory is an open-source website that helps
researchers explore and share the the online impact of
their research.
We’re funded by the National Science Foundation
Altmetrics.com is a UK based commercial
service providers of Altmetrics
41. Connecting with Researchers…
Library play an important role to an institution’s
reputation.
The quality, nature and extent of the library’s
collections, of its staff and the services they provide,
and of its buildings are all important.
Successful and high-quality libraries can be a
significant factor in promoting quality research.
The digital revolution has changed the relationship
between libraries and researchers
Libraries must adopt strong service culture, so that
can help researchers in scholarly communication
cycle, as well as winning recognition and respect for
the library across the institution
