The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning model on learning outcomes of ship electrical courses in the Sorong Polytechnic Engineering Department. The method used was quasi-experimental. The population of this research was the cadets in the Department of engine as many as 72 cadets in Sorong Polytechnic, The number of samples as many as 48 cadets were obtained by random sampling technique. Data collection used tests. Analysis of the data used was the t test. The results of data analysis obtained a significant difference in the average gain value in the class treated by the Problem Based Learning model and in the class treated with the conventional method, where the experimental class was higher than the control class. So it can be concluded the learning process by using the Problem Based Learning model affects the learning outcomes of cadets in the ship's electrical lectures

Abstract : The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Problem Based
Learning model on learning outcomes of ship electrical courses in the Sorong
Polytechnic Engineering Department. The method used was quasi-experimental. The
population of this research was the cadets in the Department of engine as many as 72
cadets in Sorong Polytechnic, The number of samples as many as 48 cadets were
obtained by random sampling technique. Data collection used tests. Analysis of the data
used was the t test. The results of data analysis obtained a significant difference in the
average gain value in the class treated by the Problem Based Learning model and in the
class treated with the conventional method, where the experimental class was higher
than the control class. So it can be concluded the learning process by using the Problem
Based Learning model affects the learning outcomes of cadets in the ship's electrical
lectures.
Key words : problem based learning, learning outcomes, application of the model
Education is a program that consists of several components that work in a system.
According to (Slameto , 2010, p.85) learning is a learning process carried out by a
person to obtain a new change in behavior as a whole, as his own experience in
interaction with his environment. The definition of learning is also conveyed by various
experts who like Cronbach define learning is shown by a change in behavior as a result
of experience. Harold spears provides limits of learning is to observe, to read, to imitate,
to try something yourself, to list, to follow directions. Geoch said that learning is a
change in performance as a result of practice.
Improving the quality of education is a very important task and comprehensive
handling is needed. The quality of education can be improved by several things that
need to be highlighted, namely the development of new models of curriculum and
school management, improvement of the quality of teachers and education personnel,
as well as raising the quality of learning and the effectiveness of learning models.
Improving the quality of learning is carried out to improve the quality of educational
outcomes.
With the implementation of strategies and integrated learning models that involve all
elements related to the learning process so that learning objectives are achieved. The
teacher is very instrumental in the learning process in the classroom, for that teacher
must be smart and active in educating students in the learning process. Therefore the
lecture's knowledge and attitude towards the curriculum must be able to practice it in
the classroom and the teacher's attitude also participates directly in the teaching and
learning process. A teacher must also be sensitive to the conditions and circumstances
of students because each student has different potential and interests
In the results of interviews conducted with ship electrical lecturers, it is known that the
process of implementing learning in the Sorong Polytechnic is still not getting maximum
2. results. The minimum completeness criteria is the study completeness criteria by
determining the learning outcomes with the Minimum Mastery Criteria at score 75.
Below is a table.1 of the low midterm results of a population of 3 classes totaling 72
cadets. In odd semester

From the data above it can be seen that there are still many cadets who do not graduate.
Each class has many cadets who do not pass. A lecturer in ship electricity said that
cadets consider ship electricity to be a difficult subject
The lack of active cadets in the learning process also caused lecturers to only use the
lecture method, so the cadets were lazy to learn especially the electricity of the ship. The
learning method that has been used by conventional lecture methods and is less able to
use learning media that can enable cadets to enthusiastically learn, especially in the
subject of ship electricity. To overcome these problems, a learning process can be
carried out that can increase motivation and enthusiasm for learning cadets. One
learning model that can be used is Problem Based Learning. Problem Based Learning is
a learning model that demands full student activity in order to solve every problem
faced by students independently by constructing their knowledge and understanding.
Problems given to students, before students learn concepts or materials relating to
problems that must be solved. To stimulate the ability to think at a high level. Learning
outcomes are the abilities obtained by students after going through the learning process.
Based on the background of the problems mentioned above, the authors identify the
problem as follows:
1. Low learning outcomes.
2. Less active students in the learning process.
3. The method used by the lecturer is still using the conventional lecture method
The formulation of the problem in this study is as follows:
Is there an influence on the application of the Problem Based Learning Model to the
learning outcomes of cadets in the electrifical ship subjectat Politeknik Pelayaran
Sorong. in the odd semester of 2019
Benefits of research
1. For researchers, this research is expected to provide concrete information about the
influence of the Problem Based Learning model in ship electrical learning.
2. For lecturers, it is easier for lecturers in the teaching and learning process to improve
the learning outcomes of cadets
3. For cadets, it will be easier to study the ship's electricity courses
