Questions 1 to 8 are based on the given stimuli. Study the information carefully and choose
the best answer.
1 From the extract, we know that Mr Wong is ___________ his driver, Ariff.
A dissatisfied with
B suspicious of
C curious about
D angry with
2 From the article above we know that
A cold and flu are spread in different ways.
B adults are more susceptible to be contracted.
C school-age children could easily catch colds.
D the virus spreads after the symptoms of the illness start.
Airborn - Different viruses cause the common cold and flu, but
both are spread through the air in tiny droplets produced when an
infected person coughs, sneezes or breathes. When you sneeze
your body is getting rid of infected cells and an average sneeze will
spread over 100,000 virus cells up to 30 feet. And, in case you were
wondering, people suffering from a cold can spread the virus from
two days before the symptoms of the illness start and up to four
days afterwards. On average, adults catch two to three colds each
year. School-age children can have twelve or more colds in a year.
Aha! That’s it! It must have happened then. He had left his briefcase
in the car with Ariff.
Old Ariff was his new driver. Wong was concerned when he heard Ariff
had a big family. With so many mouths to feed, Ariff was just the type to be
always short of cash. In fact, only yesterday he tried to ask for an advance.
Ariff must have gone through his briefcase and taken the money!

3 From the article we can conclude that
A the fire was caused by accidents.
B almost 300 people died because of the fire.
C the country was banned from daytime cooking.
D one can go to prison if one cooks during the day.
4 Imports of prawns may be detained as the prawns are
A contaminated with prohibited antibiotics
B banned by the Consumer Association of Penang
C not certified by the authorities to be sold in the country
D not registered under the US Food and Drug Administration
„Check if prawns are safe‟
GEORGE TOWN: The authorities should check if prawns sold in local markets
are safe for consumption.
“The use of banned antibiotics is a concern to consumers,” said Consumer
Association of Penang (CAP) president S. M. Mohamed Idris.
He said the authorities should also certify prawns sold in the country as
safe for consumption besides issuing certification to the ones exported to the
United States.
Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration said in a statement that it
may detain imports of prawns from Malaysia after finding traces of nitrofurans and
chloramphenicol in shipments.
The agency said that it was placing companies processing or shipping
prawns from the peninsular Malaysia on Import Alert, which means their
shipments could be detained at the port of entry without physical examination.
DAYTIME COOKING BANNED IN INDIA
PATNA (India): With sizzling temperatures claiming more than 300 lives this
month in India, officials said they were banning daytime cooking in some parts
of the drought-stricken country in a bid to prevent accidental fires that have
killed nearly 80 more people. Anyone defying the ban, risks up to a year in jail.

5 From the article above we know that forgiveness
A can kill a person.
B can change someone.
C helps to get rid of toxic.
D is also good for ourselves.
6 How did Brendon Garman know what to do in the situation?
A He saw his teacher reaching for the purse.
B He watched a movie that has a similar scene.
C He experienced such emergencies before.
D He was a quick thinker.
We often think of forgiveness as something we do for the sake of
someone else, but new research shows that is not the whole story.
“When people engage in forgiveness, it changes their physiology,”
says Dr Robert Enright. As the founder of the International
Forgiveness Institute and the author of The Forgiving Life and 8
Keys to Forgiveness, Enright has been pioneering the study of the
power of forgiveness for three decades.
“Forgiveness helps you get rid of what we call toxic anger,” he says.
“The type that can literally kill a person.”
An average school day at Oak Grove Elementary in Poplar Bluff,
Missouri, took a deadly spin last April when fourth-grade teacher Madonna
Kenser suffered a near-fatal allergic reaction to a dry-erase marker. Kenser
inhaled the fumes while teaching the class using an overhead projector,
when suddenly her throat began to close.
The class was stunned. Thankfully, one youngster, Brendon
Garman, knew what to do. He jumped from his desk and darted toward the
purse his teacher had been reaching for. Finding her inhaler, he then gave
a woozy Kenser her first life-saving gasps.
It was a fearful moment, but Brendon credits his quick thinking to a
scene he remembered from the movie Are We There Yet. In the scene, one
of the main characters has an asthma attack and collapses. Another
character rushes to his aid with an inhaler and is able to revive him.

Parkour History
The earliest form of Parkour in history was defined by Georges Hebert, a naval officer in
the French army who served both during World War I and World War II. Because he was a
soldier, he often travelled to Africa, where he was impressed by the efficient, flowing
athletic movements of most of the African tribes he visited. After he had returned to
France, he began to develop a method of natural movement for officers serving in the
military, in which both men and women were trained to move efficiently and fluently
around a wide variety of obstacles in their path. The most well-known founding figure of
Parkour is David Belle, who learned about the discipline from his father back in the 1980s.
The group he trained in came up with the term “parkour,” which came from “parcours du
combattant“, an obstacle course used to train soldiers of the French military.

As soon as I disembarked from the bus, I saw a flat cloud, iron-grey and blue across
the Straits of Malacca. The closer I got to the shoreline, the more 9 it was defined. I
walked 10 and saw it was a series of undulating sand dunes. It was the reclaimed beach
front. Ahead on the sandy beach was a person, down a dune four hundred feet away 11
whether it was a man or a woman I could not tell. Some minutes later I saw her scarf and
her sarong, and for some more minutes on those undulating dunes, 12 walked toward
each other under the grey sky. We were the only people visible in the landscape - there was
no one behind 13 of us. She was a real walker - arms swinging, flat shoes, no cap, no
map. It was lovely, too, grey sky above, the sun in the southwest, and a cloudburst 14 like
a broken bag in the east. I watched this woman, this fairly old woman, in her warm scarf and
long sarong, a bunch of flowers in her hand. I watched her come on. She did not look at
me. She drew level and did not 15 me. There was no other human being in sight on the
beach, deserted for once, only for a lone fishing boat. She walked past me and still with
stony-faced.
“Evening!” I said.
“Oh,” she turned her head to me. “Good evening.”
She gave me a good smile because I had spoken first. But if I hadn't, we would have

Questions 16 to 25
Read the following text and answer the questions that follow.
Public Transport System
The importance of a good public transport system
Good public transport systems are an essential part of safe, clean and affordable
transport for development. From a social perspective, public transport is often the
only means of transport for the poor. Without it, they would be able to look at work
opportunities only within walking distance of their homes, so public transport
improves their livelihood opportunities. It also gives them greater access to
education, health care and recreation. For senior citizens, people with disabilities
and children, public transport is also their main means of mobility.
From an urban mobility perspective, public transport is far more efficient than
personal motor vehicles in terms of the road space it uses up and the energy it
consumes. For example, a bus carrying 40 passengers uses only 2.5 times more
road space than a car carrying only 1 or 2 people. And the same bus consumes only
about 3 times as much fuel as a car. Public transport is thus important for improving
sustainable mobility in urban areas, and we consider it the right approach to
encourage low-carbon growth in cities.
The key elements of a sustainable public transport system
A good public transport system must be easy and convenient to use, fast, safe, clean
and affordable. Seoul, Singapore and Hong Kong are known for their excellent
transport systems.
A key feature is that they integrate multiple technologies, such as metro rail, light rail,
Bus Rapid Transit and basic bus services. A common ticket or fare card serves all
the systems, making it easy for passengers to transfer from one mode to the other.
Passenger information systems enable users to know when the next service is due
and to understand the routes easily, and high frequency of service reduces the
hassle of a long wait for the next bus or train.
The challenges of providing public transport
The challenges in providing transportation to the cities are to be able to do it at an
affordable price besides the competing modes, like personal vehicles, which are
unsustainable. In getting people to choose public transport over personal vehicles, it
is advisable to think of the convenience and the reliability of the transport.

November 18, 1994. I washed my face, brushed my teeth and slipped on my
pyjamas. Ordinary things on an ordinary night, but I was still anxious, eyeing the
full moon. My husband was asleep. Agitated, I walked around the house, checking
for … for what? I wandered into my children‟s room. Ben was sleeping. I pulled
the covers around him and kissed his forehead.
I walked downstairs to check the hearth. The fire was almost out. I climbed upstairs
and fell into bed, but an hour later, panic woke me. I wandered the halls. It was still
in the house. A thin veil of smoke lingered in the air. I forced myself to go back to
bed. Within an hour, I was awake again. I stood in the children‟s room. The house
seemed smokier than it did before, but how could that be when the fire burned out
hours ago? I opened a window, returned to bed, and fell into a dead sleep.
I heard screams. It was my husband. “Sarah! Get out of the house!”
Hearing the panic in his voice,
I bolted upright. I ran to the bedroom door and
swung it open, and I was blown back, knocked to the floor. Searing heat and black
smoke overtook me, burning my skin. Through the deafening roar of fire, a smoke
alarm whined like a mosquito. I gasped for breath and crawled across the floor,
gagging. The smell of that fire was something I will never forget. It was not the cosy
smell of a campfire but the putrid stench of synthetic carpeting, drywall plaster, and
household appliances melting, the toxic cloud of our life disintegrating.
Without knowing how, I had Ben in my arms and was at his bedroom window.
When I opened it, ashes and smoke blew through as the heat was pulled toward
us. There was fire behind me, a 30-foot drop to concrete below.
My husband shouted from another window, “Hold on! I‟m coming – I‟m going to
jump!” Then the sickening sound of bones against cement. I screamed his name,
but he did not respond. I started to cry, but there was no time for panic.
I lowered Ben out his window as far as my arms would stretch so he could breathe.
I held only his tiny hands, his body dangling. I was in the centre of the firestorm. I
choked, spitting out black grease. Blisters rose on the backs of my legs; the pain
became unbearable. I had to do something. But there was no grass below, no
trees or bushes.
My brain searched for options. If I held Ben while I jumped, I could crush him. I had
to let go of his hands. I knew that if I did it, he might break bones or suffer a bad
injury. But if I did nothing, I would burn to death, and he would fall. Stretching my
body to make his drop as short as possible, I lowered him as far as I could, until I
was holding just the ends of his chubby fingers. The smoke was so thick, I could
not see him. I begged God to protect him. I let go. At that very moment, My
husband shouted, “Drop him! I‟m here!”
I scrambled out the window. I took a deep breath, then fell. I heard the thump of a
hip against concrete, but it was as though it happened to someone else. I felt
nothing. My husband yanked me to my feet. Ben was clutched to his chest. “I

caught him,” my husband said. We looked at each other in disbelief. We were
alive. All three levels were consumed, flames shooting out the windows. We ran.
Days after the fire, cars pulled up to my mom‟s house with donations. Calls came
from friends, and they suggested a benefit concert. By night, my husband and I
were plagued with nightmares. By day, we were surrounded with love. We had
been given the chance to feel something most people would never know – to be
held by hundreds of unseen hands – a comforting yet overwhelming sensation.
Grateful, yes, and we were also tired of being grateful and needy.

The Living Photograph
My small grandmother is tall there,
straight-back, white broderie anglaise shirt,
pleated skirt, flat shoes, grey bun,
a kind, old smile round her eyes.
Her big hand holds mine,
White hand in black hand.
Her sharp blue eyes look her own death in the eye.
It was true after all; that look.
My tall grandmother became small.
Her back round and hunched.
Her soup forgot to boil.
She went to the awful place grandmothers go.
Somewhere unknown, unthinkable.
But there she is still,
in the photo with me at three,
the crinkled smile is still living, breathing.
