4. Surrealism – displacement of objects.
Shoe hat etc.
Literary, art and fashion movement.
Imaginative, innovative.
Schiaparelli gained lots of inspiration from this art movement for her designs in the
1930‟s.
5. Cinema technology, created a fashion craze base upon Hollywood glamour.
British Vogue fashion magazine, usually featured Hollywood actresses. These
actresses inspired middle class women in the fashion they wanted to wear.

6. Style: London‟s fashion excelled in making suits for both men and women.
They developed through the decade t become more extravagant in style.
They were made to measure predominantly in Saville Row.
Silhouette: the silhouette of the decade used simplistic lines.
The silhouette create a matured look.
The figure became longer and leaner by the clothing becoming more
figure hugging.
Within the 1930‟s society it was quite common to dress for an occasion
such as sports and leisure, evening wear, day wear etc.
7. Mens fashion didn‟t develop much throughout the decade.
Men still traditionally wore tailored suits day and night.
„London cut‟ suit was a popular shape and cut within the 1930‟s.
Formal leisure wear was a popular trend for day time wear.
8. Beauty:
The skin was usually pale in colour and eyebrows were plucked to a thin
dramatic line.
Eye shadow wasn‟t really worn, but a thin line of eyeliner
Lips were lined with lip liner and red lipstick was a popular colour along with
wine and brown shades.
Hair:
Hairstyles became added more volume throughout the decade- with curls
and waves to create an unkempt look.
Budget friendly hair style were the preferred style.
9. Silk, fine wools and linen- exclusive and luxurious fabrics.
Fur was popular to make and trim garments.
Wools and tweeds were commonly used for suits.
Printed textiles were popular- the designs tended to be simple and neat.
10. Accessories were used to add detail to a simple outfit.
Hats were popular for outdoor wear including fez, berets, tricornes.
Elbow length gloves were usually worn with evening dresses and shorter gloves
were worn during the day.

Used the surrealist art movement for a lot of inspiration.
Used the theme displacement of objects for example shoe hats.
Created sophisticated but witty clothes.

Uses his architecture background for inspiration.
He created the romantic style within the 1930‟s era.
He believed accessories made the overall look of an outfit.
Norman Hartnell;
Was a royal designer, who gained international recognition for his designs
Specified in designing evening wear.
