In the Middle Ages, travelers like merchants, ambassadors, priests, and pilgrims frequently passed through rural areas. Europe began recognizing early forms of rural tourism in the 16th-17th centuries through painters depicting rural life. After the 1960s, people began spending more time in nature and rural areas for holidays as part of a trend toward more nature-focused vacations with reduced comforts.
