  4. 4. Definition of heritage<br />What is or may be inherited; that which belongs to one by reason of birth; inheritance; something passed down to future generations (Australian Government 2010)<br />

What is heritage?<br />Heritage can be something you can touch and see but it can also be things you can’t, like music, stories, spoken histories and traditions.<br />It helps us remember where we came from and where we belong.<br />Heritage is all the things that make up our story, tangible and intangible, and as we value them we must protect them.<br />

  7. 7. Through conservation, recognition and promotion of the cultural identity of all Australians we can contribute to a greater understanding and acceptance of our diversity.<br />Ultimately this will contribute to strengthening our community and our place in the world.<br />
  8. 8. National Heritage List<br />Australia’s list of places with outstanding heritage value to our nation.<br />The List comprises natural, historic and Indigenous places.<br />To qualify, the place must meet one or more statutory criteria.<br />

National Heritage List criteria<br />the place has outstanding heritage value to the nation because of the place's importance in the course, or pattern, of Australia's natural or cultural history <br />the place has outstanding heritage value to the nation because of the place's possession of uncommon, rare or endangered aspects of Australia's natural or cultural history <br />the place has outstanding heritage value to the nation because of the place's potential to yield information that will contribute to an understanding of Australia's natural or cultural history <br />the place has outstanding heritage value to the nation because of the place's importance in demonstrating the principal characteristics of: <br />a class of Australia's natural or cultural places; or <br />a class of Australia's natural or cultural environments; <br />

National Heritage List criteria<br />the place has outstanding heritage value to the nation because of the place's importance in exhibiting particular aesthetic characteristics valued by a community or cultural group <br />the place has outstanding heritage value to the nation because of the place's importance in demonstrating a high degree of creative or technical achievement at a particular period <br />the place has outstanding heritage value to the nation because of the place's strong or special association with a particular community or cultural group for social, cultural or spiritual reasons <br />

National Heritage List criteria<br />the place has outstanding heritage value to the nation because of the place's special association with the life or works of a person, or group of persons, of importance in Australia's natural or cultural history <br />the place has outstanding heritage value to the nation because of the place's importance as part of Indigenous tradition. <br />Note: The cultural aspect of a criterion means the Indigenous cultural aspect, the non-Indigenous cultural aspect, or both.<br />
