Charo is a 34-year-old, heterosexual, Hispanic female. She is unemployed and currently lives in an apartment with her ve chil- dren, ages 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8. She came to this country 8 years ago from Mexico with her husband, Paulo. During intake, Charo reported that she suffered severe abuse and neglect in the home as a child and rape as a young adult. Charo does not speak English and currently does not have a visa to work.
Charo initially came for services at our domestic violence agency because Child Protective Services (CPS) and the court ordered her to attend a domestic violence support group after allegations of domestic violence were made by one of her chil- dren to a teacher at their school. Her husband was ordered to attend a batterer’s intervention program (BIP). Charo attended the domestic violence support group but seldom said a word. Although she rarely shared during group, she also rarely missed a session. While she attended the group, she also met with me weekly for individual sessions. During these sessions I informed her of the dynamics of domestic violence and helped her create a safety plan. She often said that she was only attending the group because it was mandated and that she just wanted CPS to close her case. One week, Charo suddenly stopped attending group. When I called her, she said that she had been busy and unable to attend. That same day her husband called me to verify that I was who his wife said I was, as he often accused Charo of having affairs.
Charo showed up to group again one day.

and the child was temporarily placed in a kinship care arrangement
with the maternal grandmother, who resides nearby. As a
result of Joseph’s arrest, he was fired from the cleaning company
where he worked, and the family is now experiencing financial
difficulties.
After initial contact was made with the parents, a number of
concerns were noted and the family was recommended for additional
case management. Carol’s mother indicated that she had
concerns about Carol’s drinking habits and stated that Carol’s
father and grandfather were alcoholics. She and the father separated
when Carol was a baby, and Carol has had only limited
contact with him. There appears to be significant tension between
the grandmother and Carol and Joseph. I addressed the alcohol
issue with both parents, who denied there was a problem, but
shortly after the discussion, Carol was involved in a serious car
accident with the baby in the car. She was determined to have been
under the influence of alcohol. I advised Carol that she could not
have any unsupervised contact with her child until she completed
intensive inpatient substance abuse treatment. I made arrangements

her attendance was erratic because she had lost her license as a

You have decided to speak with the prosecutor, Mary, on behalf of Maureen, the college student who was a victim of date rape. You want to convince Mary to support a change in the prosecutor's policy of not prosecuting date rape cases when drugs or alcohol are involved. Maureen has a strict policy: when someone wants to speak with her about changing an established policy, she wants the person to submit a paper of 3

Barbara is a 25-year-old, heterosexual, Caucasian female and is the mother of a 6-month-old baby boy. She is currently unemployed and has neither specific skills nor a college education. At the time we first met, she was living her with her son, Jonah, and her boyfriend, Scott (also Jonah’s father), in a home that her grandparents purchased for her. Scott, a 29-year-old, heterosexual, Caucasian male, is employed by a flooring company, although his work is not regular. Both Barbara and Scott have a long history of severe polysubstance abuse, including heroin addiction. They are both currently prescribed methadone.
Jonah was born with severe birth defects due in part to Barbara’s and Scott’s drug use. Jonah remained in the hospital for several weeks after his birth, and during that time he underwent multiple surgeries. Among other abnormalities, he was born with two stomachs, one of which formed on the exterior of his body. He will need additional surgeries in the future and his stomach will never be fully functioning. The full extent of his disabilities is not certain at this time.

Barbara is a 25-year-old, heterosexual, Caucasian female and is the mother of a 6-month-old baby boy. She is currently unemployed and has neither specific skills nor a college education. At the time we first met, she was living her with her son, Jonah, and her boyfriend, Scott (also Jonah’s father), in a home that her grandparents purchased for her. Scott, a 29-year-old, heterosexual, Caucasian male, is employed by a flooring company, although his work is not regular. Both Barbara and Scott have a long history of severe polysubstance abuse, including heroin addiction. They are both currently prescribed methadone.
Jonah was born with severe birth defects due in part to Barbara’s and Scott’s drug use. Jonah remained in the hospital for several weeks after his birth, and during that time he underwent multiple surgeries. Among other abnormalities, he was born with two stomachs, one of which formed on the exterior of his body. He will need additional surgeries in the future and his stomach will never be fully functioning. The full extent of his disabilities is not certain at this time.
When our sessions began, Barbara was experiencing financial problems and was trying to obtain Social Security Disability for Jonah. Because Jonah is unable to attend day care due to his fragile health, Barbara has had to stay home and has reported feelings of isolation.

Client is a 17 year old African American male that presented for a Comprehensive Assessment to determine eligibility for services. Though biologically male, she has socially transitioned and prefers to be addressed as Charmaine. The client identifies as a female. Her outward appearance was that of a teenage female. Present at the assessment was foster parent. During the assessment, client was argumentative with foster parent and disrespectful; indicating she did not want to come for services. Client reports she has no issues. She is resistant to available resources.
Information gathered was obtained from other records and the foster mom. The client engages in disruptive behaviors and these behaviors have been evident for an extended period of time. Client recently moved to this foster placement. Client’s history is significant for multiple placement changes. She was adopted at approximately the age of four (4) and was placed in DSS custody at age 16. Prior to a request to have the client moved from the former placement, the client cut her genitals (scrotum) with a razor, requiring fifteen (15) stitches to close the wound. The client reports that it was a “shaving accident” and her hand slipped when she was trying to shave her legs. When asked about consideration for a gender reassignment, client responded she was unsure. Documents indicate she has discussed previously.
It has been reported that the client is overtly defiant with adult authority figures, and often responds with attempts to engage others in verbal arguments. She has shown a pattern of poor emotional regulation. The client has been involved with mental health services for an extended period of time and she has struggled with behaviors and interpersonal interactions. Her problematic interpersonal interactions are often triggered by being unable to obtain her immediate wants, and this poor impulse control often leads to emotional displays of anger and frustration, and they often interfere with her ability to maintain a positive interaction with others.
Client’s history is significant for multiple traumas-abuses and neglects in the biological home, struggles to acclimate and the adoptive home and subsequent discharge to DSS custody. It is reported that client’s biological parents have history for alcohol and drugs, mental illness and general instability.
The client has been provided extensive mental health services ranging from outpatient services to those requiring a secure residential facility. Documents indicate client has made threats of suicidal ideation and threats of homicidal intent (threatened to poison her adopted mother) but she denies.
The client resides currently with a foster parent. Her biological mother was killed by her aunt. Her father was recently released from prison and resides in a halfway house in Ohio.

Maria is a 25 year old African American female, with four children under the age of six
years old. To ensure her protection of her identity, I will refer to her as Maria. Maria states that
she is a christian and does not attend church often. Maria reports that she would like to become
more active in church again. Maria says that she is currently in an abusive relationship with her
spouse of seven years. While she is not physically disabled, she mentioned that she is facing var-
ious psychological challenges that have made her live in an inpatient psychological hospital.
Maria says that she identifies as a female who is attracted to the opposite sex. She is currently
working two jobs to sustain her life and the lives of her four children aged six, three, one, and
two months (1boy and 3 girls). Therefore, she is financially and economically challenged; but
she has been doing the best she could to make ends meet despite her circumstances.
Maria has managed to secure a 2-bedroom apartment that she shares with her four chil-
dren. Besides her two jobs, she also seeks welfare support to help her with daycare, medical and
food assistance. Maria also mentioned that her older brother sends her checks from time to time
to help her with the children. Additionally, she makes use of food stamps that have been availed
to her to cut the cost of food. Some non-governmental organization has also volunteered to take
care of educational needs of her two older children. While her emotional and psychological state
seems a bit unstable, Maria is physically healthy, and reports that she takes care of her physical
wellbeing, by walking 3 miles per day, to catch a bus to work.
Maria presenting issues is PTSD, she has been sexually assaulted numerous of times
throughout her childhood. She seems to be trying to forget some issues of her past that bring
back bad memories regarding her sexual abuse. She seems traumatized by her sexual past, which

is apparent in how she disregards any questions about her sexual abusive past. The relevant his-
tory behind her traumatic response to sexual-related questions stems from her experiences as a
young girl. At the time of the abuse, she was living with her grandmother, cousins, uncles, broth-
ers, and aunts. From the ages of four to nine, she was sexually abused by her family members.
The trauma from those incidents has seemingly remained with her in her adult life. It is affecting
her relationship with males.
Theoretical Approach
The theoretical approach I used for Maria was Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy (TF-CBT). This is an evidence-based theoretical approach to treatment of traumatized .

Rita has dated in the past but never developed a serious relationship. She is close to her immediate and extended family as well as to her female friends in the Latino community. Although her parents and three of her siblings were born in the Dominican Republic, Rita was born in the United States.
A year ago, Rita was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance of a male coworker. Rita and a female coworker met Juan and Bob after work at a local bar for a light meal and a few drinks. Because Rita had to get up early to work her shift the next day, Bob offered to drive her home. Instead of taking Rita directly home, however, he drove to a desolate spot nearby and assaulted her. Afterward, Bob threatened to harm her family if she did not remain silent and proceeded to drive her home. Although Rita did not tell her family what happened, she did call our agency hotline the next day to discuss her options. Van is a 43-year old Asian American male who is married with two young sons. He lives with his spouse and sons in the San Francisco area. He and his wife left Vietnam for the United States 7 years ago, and they own and operate a small nail salon and spa. Van was raised in a poor family and has little formal education. Aside from routine business conflicts, Van and his wife have gotten along quite well in their marriage and have always been supportive of each other. This changed abruptly last year when his oldest son, age 9, accused him of physical and sexual abuse. Because he described ongoing abuse while at school, Van’s son’s claim was reported to the state by one of his teachers. Since then, Van has had to make several court appearances, and this matter has put tremendous strain on the entire family. Although he denies the claims, Van has started to abuse alcohol since the accusation was made, and he will not talk to his oldest son or his wife. He does not use alcohol daily but is a binge drinker, consuming a large amount of whiskey two to three times per week and becoming very intoxicated. Van has never seen a therapist but is now court-ordered to seek psychological evaluation and treatment. He feels wrongly accused of these acts, although he admits that he has used physical punishment on both boys in the past. He believes that physical punishment is accepted in his native culture but is not understood in the United States. At this point, his marriage has suffered, as has his relationship with both sons. He has been unable to function at work since being accused of sexual abuse. While both of Van’s sons used to be excellent students, their grades have fallen, and the oldest son has behavior problems. Roy is a single 37-year old African American male who is a part-time factory worker and lives with a roommate in an urban apartment in California. He has never been married, but he currently has a girlfriend. He has a high school education. He has chronic low back pain, blaming this on his job duties, which require some heavy lifting. He is involved in physical therapy and medical management for his condition. At work, Roy has had several incidents in which he became extremely angry with a coworker. In one incident, his supervisor observed his behavior, which he noted was physically threatening to the coworker. His behavior has been documented by his supervisor twice already, which has led to some job insecurity for Roy. Roy has been using high doses of Vicodin prescribed by his doctor for chronic pain. He is a smoker and uses alcoh.

Nora is a 41-year-old African American single mother of two young boys, ages 8 and 10. She and her
sons recently evacuated from their home ahead of a major hurricane. They stayed with relatives for two
weeks until they were able to return to their home safely. When they arrived home, they found their
house uninhabitable—a tree had fallen on the house, which led to significant flooding and structural
damage. They will need to live elsewhere until the home can be repaired. While they have made short-
term arrangements to go back to her family’s house, Nora is unsure how long they will be displaced and
is particularly concerned about the commute to her sons’ school and her work. To make matters worse,
she has been formally reprimanded at work for taking time off to meet with the insurance adjuster and
construction team.
Nora is presenting with symptoms of hopelessness, tearfulness, and despair. She feels overwhelmed at
the loss she and her sons have faced and her perceived powerlessness to fix the situation. She notes
feeling disengaged at work and unable to focus in many areas of her life.
History
Nora has been a single mother for the past four years. She and her ex-husband divorced after her
husband’s infidelity, and she and her sons remained in the home. Her ex-husband moved out of town
two years ago and maintains somewhat regular communication with his sons—engaging with them on
social media, speaking to them by phone roughly once a month, and seeing them every six months. Nora
reports that although she has “no hard feelings” toward her ex-husband and strives to have a good co-
parenting relationship, they do not maintain contact outside of his communication with the boys, and he
is not a source of financial or emotional support to her.
Nora has been employed as the general manager of a small chain of local restaurants for the past two-
years. Prior to that she held the manager position for one of the restaurants for nearly ten years. Nora is
hardworking and prides herself on doing a good job, providing strong support and mentorship to her
team, and supporting the local community and its patrons. The recent hurricane has had a dramatic
impact on her work life as well, destroying one of the restaurants and leaving many of her employees
without a job. She has been charged by the restaurant owners to help in the effort to rebuild, which has
only created more strain on her emotionally, mentally, and physically.
Developmental Considerations
Nora was raised as the middle child of three siblings. She reports being close to her siblings and parents
throughout her childhood and being a highly sociable child. She indicates no physical traumas or
developmental delays, but does report that she lost her mother to breast cancer when she was 18 years
old. Nora reports that this was a significant loss for her and her family, and that she has taken on the

Presentation of the Problem
Ryan is a 61 year old Caucasian male who was arrested for violating a no-contact orderwith his ex-husband and two adopted sons. Police were called when he attempted to “break in” to the family home to obtain some personal belongings. While at the home, his ex-husband returned and a physical altercation ensued in which Ryan allegedly attacked his ex-husband with a kitchen knife. No injuries were noted by police; His ex-husband, however, expressed intent to press assault charges. The circumstances surrounding the no-contact order are related to a series of incidences involving allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior with his children. Six months before, a long history of marriage conflict “came to a head” and he informed Ryan that he wished to file for divorce. Ryan’s ex-husband left the home with their two sons and filed a no-contact order against Ryan. The basis of the no-contact order included allegations that Ryan had a “secret life of sex addiction,” including frequent activity on “sex apps” and that he viewed pornography in front of their two sons. The ex-husband also alleged Ryan’s inappropriate relationship with their oldest son, 16 year old, citing that he discovered sexually-provocative language in text messages. A Child Protective Services Investigation and report was completed. Ryan adamantly denies these allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior with and in front of the children; He did however, verify he had been active on “sex apps” throughout the relationships in order to “hook up” with other men.
Psychosocial History
Ryan was born and raised in rural Mississippi. He comes from an intact family and is the youngest of four children. He referenced a narrative within the family that characterized him as the “unplanned pregnancy.” Ryan described a “good childhood” and he denied a history of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. He graduated from college and has had a successful career as an insurance broker.
When Ryan was age 9, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.She passed away four years later. This event caused tremendous emotional pain. After his mother’s death, his father began using alcohol heavily and eventually received voluntary inpatient treatment. Ryan reported a strained relationship with his father and a sense of rejection after he told his father he was homosexual. He experienced significant inner emotional conflict as an adolescent related to his sexuality. He began to seek sexual contact with others and by age 17 was having sex with men for money. He does not believe he has a sexual addiction and denied any compulsive sexual .

(This information was collected by a family therapist, who overheard the following argument between these partners in a coffee shop. All names and identifying information have been changed to protect the privacy of the individuals involved.)
Lori and Mark are a middle-aged couple, and have been living together for 17 years. Lori has a grown daughter from a previous relationship, and they have an adolescent son together.
Lori and Mark first met at a work-related medical conference, where they realized that in spite of their different backgrounds, they had a lot in common. Mark, an only child, immigrated to Canada from Scotland with his parents when he was a child. Lori has three sisters, and is the daughter of two family physicians. They were attracted to each other’s intelligence, sense of humour, and high energy. Mark and Lori both enjoy the challenges of their careers, gourmet cooking, theatre, and travelling.
Lori and Mark’s son was unexpectedly conceived early in their relationship. Lori’s previous relationship was difficult, and Mark was not interested in getting married. However, her parents repeatedly reminded her that they were getting too old to help her raise another baby. Lori’s sisters are all married. Although her family didn’t really care for Mark and thought he was too controlling, Lori wanted her children to have a father, and so she and Mark moved in together. After their son was born, Mark agreed to support their family and encouraged her to stay home with their son and her daughter. Lori was relieved to reduce her stress load and quit her job. Mark’s father passed away during this time, and his mother moved in with them to help Lori with the baby.
Lori was a homemaker for ten years, and then returned to work part-time. She is currently juggling the housework and her son’s busy schedule. As well, Lori has been caring for Mark’s mother who has recently been diagnosed with cancer. Mark and Lori are disappointed that their dream of taking their son and his grandmother on a trip to Scotland is now not possible. Lori’s daughter has decided that she would like to move back home and attend university. Tuition fees are an expense that Mark and Lori can’t afford. Lori is feeling suffocated, and would like to accept the full-time job offer she recently received.
Mark is not in favour of the promotion, even though it would mean additional income. He feels that Lori should continue working part-time, and maintain her responsibilities at home. Mark values his own traditional childhood, and wants their son to have a parent who is available for him. Mark’s own job requires extensive travel, and he doesn’t see how he could possibly take over some of Lori’s work at home. He appreciates how Lori has cared for their son and his mother, but reminds Lori that his salary supported them all for many years when she didn’t work.

Client is a 17 year old African American male that presented for a Comprehensive Assessment to determine eligibility for services. Though biologically male, she has socially transitioned and prefers to be addressed as Charmaine. The client identifies as a female. Her outward appearance was that of a teenage female. Present at the assessment was foster parent. During the assessment, client was argumentative with foster parent and disrespectful; indicating she did not want to come for services. Client reports she has no issues. She is resistant to available resources.
Information gathered was obtained from other records and the foster mom. The client engages in disruptive behaviors and these behaviors have been evident for an extended period of time. Client recently moved to this foster placement. Client’s history is significant for multiple placement changes. She was adopted at approximately the age of four (4) and was placed in DSS custody at age 16. Prior to a request to have the client moved from the former placement, the client cut her genitals (scrotum) with a razor, requiring fifteen (15) stitches to close the wound. The client reports that it was a “shaving accident” and her hand slipped when she was trying to shave her legs. When asked about consideration for a gender reassignment, client responded she was unsure. Documents indicate she has discussed previously.
It has been reported that the client is overtly defiant with adult authority figures, and often responds with attempts to engage others in verbal arguments. She has shown a pattern of poor emotional regulation. The client has been involved with mental health services for an extended period of time and she has struggled with behaviors and interpersonal interactions. Her problematic interpersonal interactions are often triggered by being unable to obtain her immediate wants, and this poor impulse control often leads to emotional displays of anger and frustration, and they often interfere with her ability to maintain a positive interaction with others.
Client’s history is significant for multiple traumas-abuses and neglects in the biological home, struggles to acclimate and the adoptive home and subsequent discharge to DSS custody. It is reported that client’s biological parents have history for alcohol and drugs, mental illness and general instability.
The client has been provided extensive mental health services ranging from outpatient services to those requiring a secure residential facility. Documents indicate client has made threats of suicidal ideation and threats of homicidal intent (threatened to poison her adopted mother) but she denies.
The client resides currently with a foster parent. Her biological mother was killed by her aunt. Her father was recently released from prison and resides in a halfway house in Ohio.
What was the client’s diagnosis? Gender Dysphoria in Adolescents and Adults, Borderline Personality Disorder, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Maria is a 25 year old African American female, with four children under the age of six
years old. To ensure her protection of her identity, I will refer to her as Maria. Maria states that
she is a christian and does not attend church often. Maria reports that she would like to become
more active in church again. Maria says that she is currently in an abusive relationship with her
spouse of seven years. While she is not physically disabled, she mentioned that she is facing var-
ious psychological challenges that have made her live in an inpatient psychological hospital.
Maria says that she identifies as a female who is attracted to the opposite sex. She is currently
working two jobs to sustain her life and the lives of her four children aged six, three, one, and
two months (1boy and 3 girls). Therefore, she is financially and economically challenged; but
she has been doing the best she could to make ends meet despite her circumstances.
Maria has managed to secure a 2-bedroom apartment that she shares with her four chil-
dren. Besides her two jobs, she also seeks welfare support to help her with daycare, medical and
food assistance. Maria also mentioned that her older brother sends her checks from time to time
to help her with the children. Additionally, she makes use of food stamps that have been availed
to her to cut the cost of food. Some non-governmental organization has also volunteered to take
care of educational needs of her two older children. While her emotional and psychological state
seems a bit unstable, Maria is physically healthy, and reports that she takes care of her physical
wellbeing, by walking 3 miles per day, to catch a bus to work.
Maria presenting issues is PTSD, she has been sexually assaulted numerous of times
throughout her childhood. She seems to be trying to forget some issues of her past that bring
back bad memories regarding her sexual abuse. She seems traumatized by her sexual past, which

is apparent in how she disregards any questions about her sexual abusive past. The relevant his-
tory behind her traumatic response to sexual-related questions stems from her experiences as a
young girl. At the time of the abuse, she was living with her grandmother, cousins, uncles, broth-
ers, and aunts. From the ages of four to nine, she was sexually abused by her family members.
The trauma from those incidents has seemingly remained with her in her adult life. It is affecting
her relationship with males.
Theoretical Approach
The theoretical approach I used for Maria was Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy (TF-CBT). This is an evidence-based theoretical approach to treatment of traumatized .

Although her parents and three of her siblings were born in the Dominican Republic, Rita was born in the United States.
A year ago, Rita was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance of a male coworker. Rita and a female coworker met Juan and Bob after work at a local bar for a light meal and a few drinks. Because Rita had to get up early to work her shift the next day, Bob offered to drive her home. Instead of taking Rita directly home, however, he drove to a desolate spot nearby and assaulted her. He and his wife left Vietnam for the United States 7 years ago, and they own and operate a small nail salon and spa. Van was raised in a poor family and has little formal education. Aside from routine business conflicts, Van and his wife have gotten along quite well in their marriage and have always been supportive of each other. This changed abruptly last year when his oldest son, age 9, accused him of physical and sexual abuse. Because he described ongoing abuse while at school, Van’s son’s claim was reported to the state by one of his teachers. Since then, Van has had to make several court appearances, and this matter has put tremendous strain on the entire family. Although he denies the claims, Van has started to abuse alcohol since the accusation was made, and he will not talk to his oldest son or his wife. He does not use alcohol daily but is a binge drinker, consuming a large amount of whiskey two to three times per week and becoming very intoxicated. Van has never seen a therapist but is now court-ordered to seek psychological evaluation and treatment. He feels wrongly accused of these acts, although he admits that he has used physical punishment on both boys in the past. He believes that physical punishment is accepted in his native culture but is not understood in the United States. At this point, his marriage has suffered, as has his relationship with both sons. Nora is a 41-year-old African American single mother of two young boys, ages 8 and 10. She and her
sons recently evacuated from their home ahead of a major hurricane. They stayed with relatives for two
weeks until they were able to return to their home safely. When they arrived home, they found their
house uninhabitable—a tree had fallen on the house, which led to significant flooding and structural
damage. They will need to live elsewhere until the home can be repaired. While they have made short-
term arrangements to go back to her family’s house, Nora is unsure how long they will be displaced and
is particularly concerned about the commute to her sons’ school and her work. To make matters worse,
she has been formally reprimanded at work for taking time off to meet with the insurance adjuster and
construction team.
Nora is presenting with symptoms of hopelessness, tearfulness, and despair. She feels overwhelmed at
the loss she and her sons have faced and her perceived powerlessness to fix the situation. She notes
feeling disengaged at work and unable to focus in many areas of her life.
History
Nora has been a single mother for the past four years. She and her ex-husband divorced after her
husband’s infidelity, and she and her sons remained in the home. Her ex-husband moved out of town
two years ago and maintains somewhat regular communication with his sons—engaging with them on
social media, speaking to them by phone roughly once a month, and seeing them every six months. Nora
reports that although she has “no hard feelings” toward her ex-husband and strives to have a good co-
parenting relationship, they do not maintain contact outside of his communication with the boys, and he
is not a source of financial or emotional support to her.
Nora has been employed as the general manager of a small chain of local restaurants for the past two-
years. Prior to that she held the manager position for one of the restaurants for nearly ten years. Nora is
hardworking and prides herself on doing a good job, providing strong support and mentorship to her
team, and supporting the local community and its patrons. The recent hurricane has had a dramatic
impact on her work life as well, destroying one of the restaurants and leaving many of her employees
without a job. She has been charged by the restaurant owners to help in the effort to rebuild, which has

Presentation of the Problem
Ryan is a 61 year old Caucasian male who was arrested for violating a no-contact orderwith his ex-husband and two adopted sons. Police were called when he attempted to “break in” to the family home to obtain some personal belongings. While at the home, his ex-husband returned and a physical altercation ensued in which Ryan allegedly attacked his ex-husband with a kitchen knife. No injuries were noted by police; His ex-husband, however, expressed intent to press assault charges. The circumstances surrounding the no-contact order are related to a series of incidences involving allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior with his children. Six months before, a long history of marriage conflict “came to a head” and he informed Ryan that he wished to file for divorce. Ryan’s ex-husband left the home with their two sons and filed a no-contact order against Ryan. The basis of the no-contact order included allegations that Ryan had a “secret life of sex addiction,” including frequent activity on “sex apps” and that he viewed pornography in front of their two sons. The ex-husband also alleged Ryan’s inappropriate relationship with their oldest son, 16 year old, citing that he discovered sexually-provocative language in text messages. A Child Protective Services Investigation and report was completed. Ryan adamantly denies these allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior with and in front of the children; He did however, verify he had been active on “sex apps” throughout the relationships in order to “hook up” with other men.
Psychosocial History
Ryan was born and raised in rural Mississippi. He comes from an intact family and is the youngest of four children. He referenced a narrative within the family that characterized him as the “unplanned pregnancy.” Ryan described a “good childhood” and he denied a history of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. He graduated from college and has had a successful career as an insurance broker.
When Ryan was age 9, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.She passed away four years later. This event caused tremendous emotional pain. After his mother’s death, his father began using alcohol heavily and eventually received voluntary inpatient treatment. Ryan reported a strained relationship with his father and a sense of rejection after he told his father he was homosexual. He experienced significant inner emotional conflict as an adolescent related to his sexuality. He began to seek sexual contact with others and by age 17 was having sex with men for money. He does not believe he has a sexual addiction and denied any compulsive sexual .

They were attracted to each other’s intelligence, sense of humour, and high energy. Mark and Lori both enjoy the challenges of their careers, gourmet cooking, theatre, and travelling.
Lori and Mark’s son was unexpectedly conceived early in their relationship. Lori’s previous relationship was difficult, and Mark was not interested in getting married. However, her parents repeatedly reminded her that they were getting too old to help her raise another baby. Lori’s sisters are all married. Although her family didn’t really care for Mark and thought he was too controlling, Lori wanted her children to have a father, and so she and Mark moved in together. After their son was born, Mark agreed to support their family and encouraged her to stay home with their son and her daughter. Lori was relieved to reduce her stress load and quit her job. Mark’s father passed away during this time, and his mother moved in with them to help Lori with the baby.
Lori was a homemaker for ten years, and then returned to work part-time. She is currently juggling the housework and her son’s busy schedule. As well, Lori has been caring for Mark’s mother who has recently been diagnosed with cancer. Mark and Lori are disappointed that their dream of taking their son and his grandmother on a trip to Scotland is now not possible. Lori’s daughter has decided that she would like to move back home and attend university. Tuition fees are an expense that Mark and Lori can’t afford. Lori is feeling suffocated, and would like to accept the full-time job offer she recently received.
Mark is not in favour of the promotion, even though it would mean additional income. He feels that Lori should continue working part-time, and maintain her responsibilities at home. Mark values his own traditional childhood, and wants their son to have a parent who is available for him. Mark’s own job requires extensive travel, and he doesn’t see how he could possibly take over some of Lori’s work at home. He appreciates how Lori has cared for their son and his mother, but reminds Lori that his salary supported them all for many years when she didn’t work.

For each interview, use the
double-entry or dialogic notebook
technique*. As the term implies, you are engaging in
a dialogue with a text; in a sense, you will be “talking back” to the work.
What I want you to do is take a piece of notebook paper and fold it in half length-wise, so you have two columns. Now, draw a line where the fold is, and you have two sides of the paper to make notes on, or have a conversation.
On the left side, you can take notes, including facts, interesting or important quotes (don't forget the page number if pertinent), unfamiliar terms, connections to other works, and so on.
Essentially, you make a note of anything that strikes you as important or interesting about the piece.
Once you've finished reading the work, go back and look at your notes. Use the right side of the paper to comment on them. What
do your notes mean? What do they reveal about the text’s meaning or significance? Why do you think this particular line caught your attention? How can you use this information in your own writing and in class discussions? This is where you should develop your critical questions.
Dialogic notebooks can be used in any number of ways:
You can write down a quote on the left (with the page number and title, so you don't forget!) and your thoughts/analysis of the quote on the right
You can compare and contrast two sources or stories; you can write sources that support your thesis on one side, and sources that act as counter-arguments on the other
You can ask questions one one side, and then explore the answers in your notes on the other side-- or words you need to look up and then their definitions.
Really, you can benefit from using a dialogic notebook in any class where reading is important. It can help increase your understanding and appreciation of texts, and can be
invaluable in helping you write papers, improve your vocabulary and prepare for tests.
It is a very useful way to organize notes. So...now you get to try it out!

Many reputable people have seen UFOs and had personal encounters with aliens. The government has documented these in secret files, which include the UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. Government attempts at concealment and cover-up have been transparent.
Thinking Critically About Authorities
Although many individuals have testified about alien encounters over the years, almost all scientific authorities have been extremely skeptical. They emphasize that all of the “evidence” is unsubstantiated, controversial, indirect, and murky—the markings of pseudoscientific fantasies. If aliens and UFOs exist, why haven't they announced their presence in an incontrovertible fashion? Some of the most intriguing evidence comes in the form of the government's belated and somewhat bizarre explanations for UFO sightings and the alleged Roswell incident. On June 25, 1997, the Air Force announced that the mysterious happenings in the New Mexico desert in the late 1940s and 1950s were in fact experiments involving crash dummies and weather balloons. Six weeks later, on August 3, 1997, the CIA “admitted” that the U.S. government had lied about alleged UFO sightings in the 1950s and 1960s to protect classified information regarding top-secret spy planes, the U-2 and SR-71. Why did the government suddenly attempt to explain these mysteries after all these years? And why does there appear to be contradictory testimony from different parts of the government? Why do the government explanations seem almost as fanciful and farfetched as the UFO stories?

Working With Domestic Violence in the Military: The Case of Mark and Sofia Mark is a 28-year-old Caucasian male married 2 years to Sofia, a 26-year-old Brazilian-born female. Mark is a United States Air Force Finance Officer and has been in the military for 5 years. The couple has no children. Both Sofia and Mark are generally in good health with no prior domestic violence or substance abuse history. Neither Sofia nor Mark has a criminal history. Mark and Sofia were initially referred to the Family Advocacy Program at a military base in the southern United States due to an incident of reported domestic violence. Sofia presented to the local emergency room with bruising to her left eye and scratches around her face and neck. Sofia told the emergency room doctor that her husband had been out all night drinking with friends the evening before, and when he returned home the couple argued and her husband became physically abusive to her. Sofia explained that he had not been physically
- 3. abusive to her before; however, he would not give her any money, and she felt very isolated being away from family and friends in her native country of Brazil. Sofia speaks primarily Portuguese and only a little English. The emergency room followed reporting procedures for domestic violence, and the police and the base were notified. The base, upon legal review, decided to take jurisdiction of this case, and the charges in Mark and Sofia's local jurisdiction were dismissed. Mark’s squadron commander made the referral to the base Family Advocacy Clinic and immediately put in place a Commander’s Restraining Order. Mark was removed from the home and told not to contact Sofia in any manner, and she was allowed to stay in her house on base. Social Work Case Studies for SOCW 6061M / Page 2 Mark was active-duty military and earned a good living. Sofia had been employed in Brazil until her marriage to Mark 2 years prior and was currently not working, largely in part due to acculturation and language barriers. Sofia had only been living in the United States for the last year and a half. Mark’s command was fully engaged in the safety of the couple and the treatment planning. Mark and Sofia presented separately and individually to the Family Advocacy Clinic for evaluation. The case was referred to the military board for review and was substantiated. After evaluation using a learned- behavior theoretical approach, Mark was referred for a secondary substance abuse evaluation and the Men’s Power and Control Group. Following Mark’s substance abuse evaluation, it was recommended he complete three classes of alcohol behavior counseling for education. Mark did not meet criteria for a substance abuse diagnosis at that time. Sofia was referred to individual therapy and a women’s support group. The use of an interpreter was employed to reduce language barriers in both the evaluation and treatment of Sofia. The goals of treatment for Sofia included having her examine in therapy the pros and cons of her staying in the marriage and to increase autonomy and self-esteem that had been damaged by the trauma of the domestic violence. The therapist and her group worked toward
- 4. aiding her in developing a healthy support system and to reduce the isolation she had been experiencing. Mark’s goals for treatment included having him take full responsibility for his own abusive behavior and to eliminate any further physical aggression in the relationship. Additionally, goals were set to have Mark examine his own coercive or emotionally abusive behaviors and develop new skills to address anger and frustration in intimate relationships. The group therapy aided Mark in developing increased empathy for his estranged spouse as well as providing a supportive social network. Social Work Case Studies for SOCW 6061M / Page 3 Sofia completed three individual therapy sessions and two women’s group meetings before she decided to return home to Brazil and file for divorce from Mark. Mark’s squadron provided financial assistance to have Sofia fly home. Mark successfully completed his required 12-week Men's Power and Control Group and his substance abuse classes, and all his goals were completed. At this time there have been no further reports of domestic violence or substance abuse with Mark, and it is assumed that Sofia has moved on and is doing well.
