Aside from routine business conflicts, Van and his wife have gotten along quite well in their marriage and have always been supportive of each other. This changed abruptly last year when his oldest son, age 9, accused him of physical and sexual abuse. Because he described ongoing abuse while at school, Van’s son’s claim was reported to the state by one of his teachers. Since then, Van has had to make several court appearances, and this matter has put tremendous strain on the entire family. Although he denies the claims, Van has started to abuse alcohol since the accusation was made, and he will not talk to his oldest son or his wife. He does not use alcohol daily but is a binge drinker, consuming a large amount of whiskey two to three times per week and becoming very intoxicated. Van has never seen a therapist but is now court-ordered to seek psychological evaluation and treatment. He feels wrongly accused of these acts, although he admits that he has used physical punishment on both boys in the past. He believes that physical punishment is accepted in his native culture but is not understood in the United States. At this point, his marriage has suffered, as has his relationship with both sons. Why does conflict exist? What if conflict and instability were life’s normal state of affairs, occasionally interrupted by periods of peace and stability? What if peace is contrary to the nature of man? According to conflict theory, society is in a state of perpetual conflict and competition for limited resources. In fact, this perspective might explain the existence of war, poverty, political strife, divorce, discrimination, and a host of other conflict-related social phenomena. If conflict theorists are right, are social workers fighting a war that cannot be won? The social worker’s mission is not to foster a utopia where all conflict ceases to exist. Working With Individuals: The Case of Roy
Roy is a 34-year-old, divorced, Caucasian male. He has been divorced for 1 year and has three children, Jordon (7), Jared (6), and Jane (3). Roy met his ex-wife, Melissa, when she was 17 and he was 25, and soon afterward she became pregnant with their first child. As part of the divorce agreement, they were given joint custody, and Melissa was granted physical custody.
Roy had been working at a hog confinement farm for the prior 2 months. Previously, he had been a highway patrolman for 10 years. Roy was terminated from the force, and charges were filed against him, after he drove his patrol car into Melissa’s home. He was ordered to pay for the damages to the house and the patrol car and enroll in a batterer’s intervention program (BIP). Melissa was granted a permanent order of protection against him, and the court ordered that Roy’s visits with his children be supervised.
I met Roy during our intake and assessment meeting prior to beginning the BIP. As one of the co-facilitators, I met individually with many of the group members prior to our first group meeting to learn more about why they were referred to the BIP and to orient them to the group’s goals and objectives. Presentation of the Problem
Ryan is a 61 year old Caucasian male who was arrested for violating a no-contact orderwith his ex-husband and two adopted sons. Police were called when he attempted to “break in” to the family home to obtain some personal belongings. While at the home, his ex-husband returned and a physical altercation ensued in which Ryan allegedly attacked his ex-husband with a kitchen knife. No injuries were noted by police; His ex-husband, however, expressed intent to press assault charges. The circumstances surrounding the no-contact order are related to a series of incidences involving allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior with his children. Six months before, a long history of marriage conflict “came to a head” and he informed Ryan that he wished to file for divorce. Ryan’s ex-husband left the home with their two sons and filed a no-contact order against Ryan. The basis of the no-contact order included allegations that Ryan had a “secret life of sex addiction,” including frequent activity on “sex apps” and that he viewed pornography in front of their two sons. The ex-husband also alleged Ryan’s inappropriate relationship with their oldest son, 16 year old, citing that he discovered sexually-provocative language in text messages. A Child Protective Services Investigation and report was completed. Ryan adamantly denies these allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior with and in front of the children; He did however, verify he had been active on “sex apps” throughout the relationships in order to “hook up” with other men.
Psychosocial History
Ryan was born and raised in rural Mississippi. He comes from an intact family and is the youngest of four children. He referenced a narrative within the family that characterized him as the “unplanned pregnancy.” Ryan described a “good childhood” and he denied a history of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. He graduated from college and has had a successful career as an insurance broker.
When Ryan was age 9, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.She passed away four years later. This event caused tremendous emotional pain. After his mother’s death, his father began using alcohol heavily and eventually received voluntary inpatient treatment. Ryan reported a strained relationship with his father and a sense of rejection after he told his father he was homosexual. He experienced significant inner emotional conflict as an adolescent related to his sexuality. He began to seek sexual contact with others and by age 17 was having sex with men for money. He does not believe he has a sexual addiction and denied any compulsive sexual .

Working With Individuals: The Case of Roy
Roy is a 34-year-old, divorced, Caucasian male. He has been divorced for 1 year and has three children, Jordon (7), Jared (6), and Jane (3). Roy met his ex-wife, Melissa, when she was 17 and he was 25, and soon afterward she became pregnant with their first child. As part of the divorce agreement, they were given joint custody, and Melissa was granted physical custody.
Roy had been working at a hog confinement farm for the prior 2 months. Previously, he had been a highway patrolman for 10 years. Roy was terminated from the force, and charges were filed against him, after he drove his patrol car into Melissa’s home. He was ordered to pay for the damages to the house and the patrol car and enroll in a batterer’s intervention program (BIP). Melissa was granted a permanent order of protection against him, and the court ordered that Roy’s visits with his children be supervised.
I met Roy during our intake and assessment meeting prior to beginning the BIP. As one of the co-facilitators, I met individually with many of the group members prior to our first group meeting to learn more about why they were referred to the BIP and to orient them to the group’s goals and objectives. Presentation of the Problem
Ryan is a 61 year old Caucasian male who was arrested for violating a no-contact orderwith his ex-husband and two adopted sons. Police were called when he attempted to “break in” to the family home to obtain some personal belongings. While at the home, his ex-husband returned and a physical altercation ensued in which Ryan allegedly attacked his ex-husband with a kitchen knife. No injuries were noted by police; His ex-husband, however, expressed intent to press assault charges. The circumstances surrounding the no-contact order are related to a series of incidences involving allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior with his children. Six months before, a long history of marriage conflict “came to a head” and he informed Ryan that he wished to file for divorce. Ryan’s ex-husband left the home with their two sons and filed a no-contact order against Ryan. The basis of the no-contact order included allegations that Ryan had a “secret life of sex addiction,” including frequent activity on “sex apps” and that he viewed pornography in front of their two sons. The ex-husband also alleged Ryan’s inappropriate relationship with their oldest son, 16 year old, citing that he discovered sexually-provocative language in text messages. A Child Protective Services Investigation and report was completed. Ryan adamantly denies these allegations of inappropriate sexual behavior with and in front of the children; He did however, verify he had been active on “sex apps” throughout the relationships in order to “hook up” with other men.
Psychosocial History
Ryan was born and raised in rural Mississippi. He comes from an intact family and is the youngest of four children. He referenced a narrative within the family that characterized him as the “unplanned pregnancy.” Ryan described a “good childhood” and he denied a history of emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. He graduated from college and has had a successful career as an insurance broker.
When Ryan was age 9, his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.She passed away four years later. This event caused tremendous emotional pain. After his mother’s death, his father began using alcohol heavily and eventually received voluntary inpatient treatment. Ryan reported a strained relationship with his father and a sense of rejection after he told his father he was homosexual. He experienced significant inner emotional conflict as an adolescent related to his sexuality. He began to seek sexual contact with others and by age 17 was having sex with men for money. He does not believe he has a sexual addiction and denied any compulsive sexual .

Working With Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Trauma: The Case of Rita
Rita is a 22-year-old, heterosexual, Latina female working in the hospitality industry at a resort. She is the youngest of five children and lives at home with her parents. Rita has dated in the past but never developed a serious relationship. She is close to her immediate and extended family as well as to her female friends in the Latino community. Although her parents and three of her siblings were born in the Dominican Republic, Rita was born in the United States.
A year ago, Rita was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance of a male coworker. Rita and a female coworker met Juan and Bob after work at a local bar for a light meal and a few drinks. Because Rita had to get up early to work her shift the next day, Bob offered to drive her home. Instead of taking Rita directly home, however, he drove to a desolate spot nearby and assaulted her. Afterward, Bob threatened to harm her family if she did not remain silent and proceeded to drive her home. Although Rita did not tell her family what happened, she did call our agency hotline the next day to discuss her options. Because Rita’s assault occurred within the 5-day window for forensic evidence collection of this kind, Rita consented to activation of the county’s sexual assault response team (SART). Although she agreed to have an advocate and the sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) meet her at the hospital, Rita tearfully stated that she did not want to file a police report at that time because she did not want to upset her family. The nurse examiner interviewed Rita, collected evidence, recorded any injuries, administered antibiotics for possible sexually transmitted infections, and gave Rita emergency contraception in case of pregnancy. The advocate stayed with Rita during the procedure, supporting her and validating her experience, and gave her a referral for individual crisis counseling at our agency.

The Case of Carol and Joseph
Carol is a 23-year-old, heterosexual, Caucasian female and the
mother of a 1-year-old baby girl. She is currently unemployed,
having previously worked for a house cleaning company. The
baby is healthy and developmentally on target, and she and the
parents appear to be well bonded with one another. Carol lives in
a rented house with her husband, Joseph. Joseph is a 27-year-old,
heterosexual, Hispanic male. He was recently arrested at their
home for a drug deal, which he asserts was a setup. Both parents
were charged with child endangerment because weapons were
found in the child’s crib and drugs were found in the home. The
parents assert that the child never sleeps in the crib but in their
bed. As a result of the parents’ arrest, social services was notified,
and the child was temporarily placed in a kinship care arrangement
with the maternal grandmother, who resides nearby. As a
result of Joseph’s arrest, he was fired from the cleaning company
where he worked, and the family is now experiencing financial
difficulties.
After initial contact was made with the parents, a number of
concerns were noted and the family was recommended for additional
case management. Carol’s mother indicated that she had
concerns about Carol’s drinking habits and stated that Carol’s
father and grandfather were alcoholics. She and the father separated
when Carol was a baby, and Carol has had only limited
contact with him. There appears to be significant tension between
the grandmother and Carol and Joseph. I addressed the alcohol
issue with both parents, who denied there was a problem, but
shortly after the discussion, Carol was involved in a serious car
accident with the baby in the car. She was determined to have been
under the influence of alcohol. I advised Carol that she could not
have any unsupervised contact with her child until she completed
intensive inpatient substance abuse treatment. I made arrangements
for her placement, but after a week, she was discharged
for noncompliance with the rules. She was then referred to an
intensive outpatient program and began therapy there. Initially
her attendance was erratic because she had lost her license as a
result of the DUI. Eventually, however, she became engaged in the
program and began to address her issues. She acknowledged that
she had started using drugs at a very young age but said that she
had only begun drinking in the previous year or so. We discussed
the genetics of her family, and she said that she realized that she
had deteriorated rapidly since beginning to drink and knew that
she simply could not drink alcohol.
Joseph’s mother is deceased, and his father travels extensively
in his job and is not available as a support. Joseph was
very devoted to his mother and was devastated by her premature
death. We discussed the strengths that he and Carol demonstrated

Abdel struggles between wanting to find his wife and wanting her to have a happy life uncomplicated by his survival. His housing is in the suburbs and a half-day journey from the resettlement agency that provides him the majority of his services.
One month after arriving in the United States, Abdel saw a pamphlet regarding special services available for refugee survivors of war trauma in his resettlement case manager’s office and asked for more information. After learning that the war trauma program provided medical, psychological, and legal assistance, he sent an email with details of his trauma history to the program coordinator asking to participate in the program. Abdel reported that during his 6 years of imprisonment, he had been repeatedly beaten, deprived of food and water, and denied treatment for injuries and illnesses resulting from the assaults and unhygienic living conditions. Abdel experiences chronic back pain and has significant dental damage as a result of his torture history. He expressed concerns about his difficulty finding employment and worries about how he will pay for rent and basic needs when his 8 months of refugee cash and medical welfare benefits end. He requested assistance finding employment training programs, accessing information regarding college scholarships to further his education, and securing social supports to help him feel more connected to his new community.
Abdel appeared very discouraged when he began the program. Informatics meshes technology and information into something useful. In nursing, informatics uses media such as health portals, mobile apps, social networking, and telehealth to aide nurses, patients and other stakeholders in decision making. When utilizing informatics our knowledge increases, we communicate better, we become more efficient with our job, and we provide better patient care.
As a hospice nurse, I often admit patients with very little to no medical history. My scenario would be to have a database that shares all health information for patients. If this would be available, decisions could be made that is in the best interest of the patient immediately and not have to wait for information to be sent. When having to wait, it impedes patient care and often has to backtrack and change the plan of care. Many times there is vital medical history missed because the patient/family member is a poor historian due to disease process or stress of the situation. If there is one database for all information potential medication errors could be avoided because you would know information such as allergies, current and previous medications prescribed.
This technology is already available to some extent in the prescription pain medicine world. The prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) is a database that keeps track of controlled substances being prescribed. This is used in the fight against the opioid epidemic occurring today.
This idea is not new but has not come to fruition yet. If this was to occur, HIPPA would have to be strictly maintained. This could happen by having the patient sign an agreement allowing their information to be in the database and every provider having access to it. Many people travel even state to state and if there was a national database, all health records would be available at the fingertips of the provider no matter where the patient was allowing efficient and knowledgeable patient care.

Harrison is a 39-year-old mechanical engineer, employed as a design manager for an automobile
corporation in Detroit, Michigan. He is married to his childhood sweetheart, Renee and is the father of
two young sons, living in an upper middle class suburb. Harrison has loved cars for as long as he can
remember. Throughout his childhood, he collected toy cars and built models. As he grew older, his
infatuation became a passion. About ten years ago, he bought a dilapidated 1956 Chevy two-door
hardtop. Over the next few years, he lovingly restored it to show-winning condition. He is a car fanatic
outside his garage as well, watching at least one car race every weekend, subscribing to several car
magazines, and serving as the vice-president of a major automobile association.
This past weekend, his club met at the Mid-Ohio Raceway, but he didn’t go. In the past two months, he
has missed three similar events and one planning meeting. His favorite part stores went unvisited, races
went unwatched, magazines piled up unread, and his beloved Chevy two-door went untouched. The
cars he had so fervently loved before now held nothing for him; he just didn’t care.
Work was pretty much the same story. He used to feel lucky; he designed cars and got paid for it. He
even got a promotion a few months ago, from design engineer to project manager. At first, things
seemed to go well, but soon he started having trouble getting his new staff organized, and they fell
behind on deadlines. The more he pushed to make his group productive, the more out of control things
got. One engineer transferred to another department and others have been looking to leave. He is
aware that his group has been doing badly but has no idea what to do about it. In the past year, he has
called in sick as much as he thought he could get away with.
At home, things have also taken a turn for the worse. His wife and he have not had sex for nearly four
months and he has no desire to. Most days, they rarely talk other than the necessary conversations. In
the past, dinner was always family time; after dinner; he always made time for his two young sons,
bathing them, reading them stories, or playing computer games with them. However, in the past month
or so, he has barely talked to his children. He can’t remember at what point their games started to annoy
him, or at which point he began to stare at the television at night. For the past week, he has even give up

Working With Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Trauma: The Case of Rita
Rita is a 22-year-old, heterosexual, Latina female working in the hospitality industry at a resort. She is the youngest of five children and lives at home with her parents. Rita has dated in the past but never developed a serious relationship. She is close to her immediate and extended family as well as to her female friends in the Latino community. Although her parents and three of her siblings were born in the Dominican Republic, Rita was born in the United States.
A year ago, Rita was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance of a male coworker. Rita and a female coworker met Juan and Bob after work at a local bar for a light meal and a few drinks. Because Rita had to get up early to work her shift the next day, Bob offered to drive her home. Instead of taking Rita directly home, however, he drove to a desolate spot nearby and assaulted her. Afterward, Bob threatened to harm her family if she did not remain silent and proceeded to drive her home. Although Rita did not tell her family what happened, she did call our agency hotline the next day to discuss her options. Because Rita’s assault occurred within the 5-day window for forensic evidence collection of this kind, Rita consented to activation of the county’s sexual assault response team (SART). Although she agreed to have an advocate and the sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) meet her at the hospital, Rita tearfully stated that she did not want to file a police report at that time because she did not want to upset her family. The nurse examiner interviewed Rita, collected evidence, recorded any injuries, administered antibiotics for possible sexually transmitted infections, and gave Rita emergency contraception in case of pregnancy. The advocate stayed with Rita during the procedure, supporting her and validating her experience, and gave her a referral for individual crisis counseling at our agency.

The Case of Carol and Joseph
Carol is a 23-year-old, heterosexual, Caucasian female and the
mother of a 1-year-old baby girl. She is currently unemployed,
having previously worked for a house cleaning company. The
baby is healthy and developmentally on target, and she and the
parents appear to be well bonded with one another. Carol lives in
a rented house with her husband, Joseph. Joseph is a 27-year-old,
heterosexual, Hispanic male. He was recently arrested at their
home for a drug deal, which he asserts was a setup. Both parents
were charged with child endangerment because weapons were
found in the child’s crib and drugs were found in the home. The
parents assert that the child never sleeps in the crib but in their
bed. As a result of the parents’ arrest, social services was notified,
and the child was temporarily placed in a kinship care arrangement
with the maternal grandmother, who resides nearby. As a
result of Joseph’s arrest, he was fired from the cleaning company
where he worked, and the family is now experiencing financial
difficulties.
After initial contact was made with the parents, a number of
concerns were noted and the family was recommended for additional
case management. Carol’s mother indicated that she had
concerns about Carol’s drinking habits and stated that Carol’s
father and grandfather were alcoholics. She and the father separated
when Carol was a baby, and Carol has had only limited
contact with him. There appears to be significant tension between
the grandmother and Carol and Joseph. I addressed the alcohol
issue with both parents, who denied there was a problem, but
shortly after the discussion, Carol was involved in a serious car
accident with the baby in the car. She was determined to have been
under the influence of alcohol. I advised Carol that she could not
have any unsupervised contact with her child until she completed
intensive inpatient substance abuse treatment. I made arrangements
for her placement, but after a week, she was discharged
for noncompliance with the rules. She was then referred to an
intensive outpatient program and began therapy there. Initially
her attendance was erratic because she had lost her license as a
result of the DUI. Eventually, however, she became engaged in the
program and began to address her issues. She acknowledged that
she had started using drugs at a very young age but said that she
had only begun drinking in the previous year or so. We discussed
the genetics of her family, and she said that she realized that she
had deteriorated rapidly since beginning to drink and knew that
she simply could not drink alcohol.
Joseph’s mother is deceased, and his father travels extensively
in his job and is not available as a support. Joseph was
very devoted to his mother and was devastated by her premature
death. We discussed the strengths that he and Carol demonstrated
in staying together and working out their p.

Abdel is a 40-year-old male, who was resettled as refugee in a major city on the East Coast. Abdel has a bachelor’s degree in theology from his home country and is fluent in English and four other languages. He fled his home country after being imprisoned and tortured for his political activism against an oppressive governmental regime. Prior to his resettlement, he spent 12 years living in a refugee camp in an African nation. Abdel was defined as a refugee by a United Nations affiliate within 6 months of arriving in the camp. He then waited 10 years before receiving word that he would be resettled to the United States and another 1½ years before arrangements were finalized.
Abdel was unable to contact his wife before escaping prison and fleeing his country; he has not been able to contact her in over 12 years, and her current whereabouts are unknown. He has heard that she remarried and had children after presuming him to be one of the missing dead. Abdel struggles between wanting to find his wife and wanting her to have a happy life uncomplicated by his survival. His mother and father passed away while he was in the camp, and he has no other family. Abdel made many friends while living in the refugee camp, and the relative of one friend now rents him a room in the United States. His housing is in the suburbs and a half-day journey from the resettlement agency that provides him the majority of his services.
One month after arriving in the United States, Abdel saw a pamphlet regarding special services available for refugee survivors of war trauma in his resettlement case manager’s office and asked for more information. After learning that the war trauma program provided medical, psychological, and legal assistance, he sent an email with details of his trauma history to the program coordinator asking to participate in the program. Abdel reported that during his 6 years of imprisonment, he had been repeatedly beaten, deprived of food and water, and denied treatment for injuries and illnesses resulting from the assaults and unhygienic living conditions. Abdel experiences chronic back pain and has significant dental damage as a result of his torture history. He expressed concerns about his difficulty finding employment and worries about how he will pay for rent and basic needs when his 8 months of refugee cash and medical welfare benefits end. He requested assistance finding employment training programs, accessing information regarding college scholarships to further his education, and securing social supports to help him feel more connected to his new community.

Rita is a 22-year-old, heterosexual, Latina female working in the hospitality industry at a resort. She is the youngest of five children and lives at home with her parents. Rita has dated in the past but never developed a serious relationship. She is close to her immediate and extended family as well as to her female friends in the Latino community. Although her parents and three of her siblings were born in the Dominican Republic, Rita was born in the United States.
A year ago, Rita was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance of a male coworker. Rita and a female coworker met Juan and Bob after work at a local bar for a light meal and a few drinks. Because Rita had to get up early to work her shift the next day, Bob offered to drive her home. Instead of taking Rita directly home, however, he drove to a desolate spot nearby and assaulted her. Afterward, Bob threatened to harm her family if she did not remain silent and proceeded to drive her home. Although Rita did not tell her family what happened, she did call our agency hotline the next day to discuss her options. Because Rita’s assault occurred within the 5-day window for forensic evidence collection of this kind, Rita consented to activation of the county’s sexual assault response team (SART). Working With Immigrants and Refugees: The Case of Abdel
Abdel is a 40-year-old male, who was resettled as refugee in a major city on the East Coast. Abdel has a bachelor’s degree in theology from his home country and is fluent in English and four other languages. He fled his home country after being imprisoned and tortured for his political activism against an oppressive governmental regime. Prior to his resettlement, he spent 12 years living in a refugee camp in an African nation. Abdel was defined as a refugee by a United Nations affiliate within 6 months of arriving in the camp. He then waited 10 years before receiving word that he would be resettled to the United States and another 1½ years before arrangements were finalized.
Abdel was unable to contact his wife before escaping prison and fleeing his country; he has not been able to contact her in over 12 years, and her current whereabouts are unknown. In nursing, informatics uses media such as health portals, mobile apps, social networking, and telehealth to aide nurses, patients and other stakeholders in decision making. When utilizing informatics our knowledge increases, we communicate better, we become more efficient with our job, and we provide better patient care.
As a hospice nurse, I often admit patients with very little to no medical history. My scenario would be to have a database that shares all health information for patients. If this would be available, decisions could be made that is in the best interest of the patient immediately and not have to wait for information to be sent. When having to wait, it impedes patient care and often has to backtrack and change the plan of care. Many times there is vital medical history missed because the patient/family member is a poor historian due to disease process or stress of the situation. If there is one database for all information potential medication errors could be avoided because you would know information such as allergies, current and previous medications prescribed.
This technology is already available to some extent in the prescription pain medicine world. The prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) is a database that keeps track of controlled substances being prescribed. This is used in the fight against the opioid epidemic occurring today.
This idea is not new but has not come to fruition yet. If this was to occur, HIPPA would have to be strictly maintained. This could happen by having the patient sign an agreement allowing their information to be in the database and every provider having access to it. Many people travel even state to state and if there was a national database, all health records would be available at the fingertips of the provider no matter where the patient was allowing efficient and knowledgeable patient care.

The GA program provides cash assistance, Medicaid coverage, and housing for homeless single adults. Joe is in need of Medicaid benefits in order to remain active in his treatment program. Joe is receiving treatment at the Mentally Ill Chemical Abuser (MICA) partial hospitalization program at the local community mental health center for clients who are dually diagnosed. Joe has a dependence on marijuana, although he has stopped using it for approximately six months, and has been diagnosed with major depressive disorder. He is being prescribed medication.
Joe reports that he is unable to work due to mental illness, and without an income or health insurance, he is unable to obtain his medication. Joe reports that while he was enrolled as a student at the state university, he would sell marijuana to other college students. Case Study 2: Harrison: Major Depressive Disorder
The Case
Harrison is a 39-year-old mechanical engineer, employed as a design manager for an automobile
corporation in Detroit, Michigan. He is married to his childhood sweetheart, Renee and is the father of
two young sons, living in an upper middle class suburb. Harrison has loved cars for as long as he can
remember. Throughout his childhood, he collected toy cars and built models. As he grew older, his
infatuation became a passion. About ten years ago, he bought a dilapidated 1956 Chevy two-door
hardtop. Over the next few years, he lovingly restored it to show-winning condition. He is a car fanatic
outside his garage as well, watching at least one car race every weekend, subscribing to several car
magazines, and serving as the vice-president of a major automobile association.
This past weekend, his club met at the Mid-Ohio Raceway, but he didn’t go. In the past two months, he
has missed three similar events and one planning meeting. His favorite part stores went unvisited, races
went unwatched, magazines piled up unread, and his beloved Chevy two-door went untouched. The
cars he had so fervently loved before now held nothing for him; he just didn’t care.
Work was pretty much the same story. He used to feel lucky; he designed cars and got paid for it. He
even got a promotion a few months ago, from design engineer to project manager. At first, things
seemed to go well, but soon he started having trouble getting his new staff organized, and they fell
behind on deadlines. The more he pushed to make his group productive, the more out of control things
got. One engineer transferred to another department and others have been looking to leave. He is
aware that his group has been doing badly but has no idea what to do about it. In the past year, he has
called in sick as much as he thought he could get away with.
At home, things have also taken a turn for the worse. His wife and he have not had sex for nearly four
months and he has no desire to. Most days, they rarely talk other than the necessary conversations. In
the past, dinner was always family time; after dinner; he always made time for his two young sons,
bathing them, reading them stories, or playing computer games with them. However, in the past month
or so, he has barely talked to his children. He can’t remember at what point their games started to annoy
him, or at which point he began to stare at the television at night. For the past week, he has even give up
on television shows and spends his evenings sitting in his garage in darkness and silence. When he looks
at his beloved car, he feels nothing. Nothing seems to matter anymore: his cars, his job, his family. His
