2. 1200 kilometers, 1200 years
Walking the Shikoku 88 temples pilgrimage
It’s not a secret, but it gets under most people’s radar. The
‘hachiju hakkasho’ – 八十八ケ所 – the Shingon Buddhist
pilgrimage around the island of Shikoku – is a great way to
see the ‘real’ Japan. The landscape of most of Shikoku is
hardly different from what it was 1200 years ago.
Walking the full 1200 km takes about six weeks, but it’s
not necessary to walk the whole thing. This workshop will
give the historical background of the pilgrimage, and will
give guidelines of how to dress and behave as an ‘o-
henro.’ Suggested sections of the route will be suggested.

8 as a symbol of eternity
Critical ages for men, women and children:

Chinese character for rice: 米 = 八 + 十 = 八
