4. Assessment
The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) undertook reassessment of
the hydropower resources of the country in 1980s.
In this survey, theoretical and the economic hydro potential of the
rivers was worked out. The potential was assessed by identifying
specific suitable sites and water availability corresponding to a 90%
dependable year.
CEA had identified 845 economically feasible schemes in various river
basin of the country. The firm energy was converted into hydroelectric
potential by applying a suitable system load factor.
5. Hydroelectric power in India
7th largest producer in the world.
As of 30 April 2017, India's installed capacity - 44,594 MW ( 13.5% of
total capacity).
Additional installed Smaller Hydroelectric Power Units with a total
capacity of 4,380 MW (1.3% of total capacity).
India's Hydroelectric Power Potential - 148,700 MW ( 60% load
factor).
Additional estimated Smaller Hydro schemes (< 25 MW) - 6,780 MW.
56 sites for Pumped Storage schemes - 94,000 MW.
Public sector - 92.5% .

northeast region.
Indian companies have constructed hydro projects:
Bhutan, Nepal, Afghanistan, and other countries.
Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), a state-owned enterprise
in north India,
Installed Capacity - 2.9 GW.
Generation Cost after four decades of operation -27 paise per
kWh.
Major source to the northern grid in India.
Large reservoirs provide wide operational flexibility.
Supply water for the irrigation of 12.5 million acres (51,000 km2) of
agricultural land in partner states, enabling the green revolution in
the northern India.

18. Importance / Benefits of these
Incentives
The overall project cost reduces.
Due to back hand capital subsidy, the financial burden on the
projects reduces.
In case of Social Development Fund(SDF) supported projects, the
requirement of promoter contribution reduces from normally 30% to
10% of total project cost.
Higher returns to project promoters as compared to other type of
industries.
