On behalf of John Olsan and Rochester Rehabilitation I’d like to thank the Sigl WalkAbout Committee and Kayleigh Nutting for lunch and for the opportunity to share our thoughts about WalkAbout. My name is Tricia Laufer, I’m a Communications and Administrative Support Specialist at Rochester Rehabilitation, and I have been involved with WalkAbout since 2001.
So why do we participate in WalkAbout? We desire that potential clients and donors see us in the community. We engage our vendors and other corporate friends, giving them the opportunity to be associated with our diverse array of services. We use it as an opportunity to educate potential clients and donors about the services we provide.
The mask project meshed beautifully with our Ventures art therapy workshop. Clients participated in this project and ultimately the Ventures program sent a team to the WalkAbout. These beautiful works of art invite a new constituency of people in the community to take a look at our agency and our services.
We’ve started a sincere effort to develop a partnership with high-school students. They can fulfill community service obligations while helping at WalkAbout. One of their musical bands performed and students helped at our giveaway table. Many of their parents also attended WalkAbout. We hope these will be lasting relationships as the students mature and someday come back to us as practitioners, clients, and donors.
WalkAbout gives our board members an opportunity to involve their families with our work. Bob has been bringing grandson Tommy for 5 years, and it is a special outing for the two of them each year.
My favorite team for 2012 was the PROS & CONS. Some of the members of this team from our Ventures PROS program were also involved in the creation of those beautiful masks. We are grateful that Medical Motor Service helped transport many of our team members to and from WalkAbout.
One of the big ways that WalkAbout engages people is the Halloween theme. The safe indoor route is wheelchair friendly, warm, and dry – even zombies appreciate it.
Building relationships and partnerships with our vendors and other corporate underwriters gives us a financial benefit as well as the opportunity to engage them in the health and welfare of Rochester Rehabilitation year after year. We build better relationships with these companies and encourage them to feel that they are a part of our success.
For the second year we were happy to bring one of our DriveOn program vehicles to the WalkAbout. Many people still presume that individuals living with disabilities can’t drive. This simply isn’t necessarily true, and it is a delight to observe people at WalkAbout – many using wheelchairs, light right up when Pam shows them some of the adaptive equipment in this vehicle and encourages them to call, come in, get an evaluation and get their independence.
Our power wheelchair soccer team, the Speed Demons, decided to bring a ball and show off a little bit this year. WalkAbout provides us with a great opportunity to show off our SportsNet teams. These participants and their families make themselves available to answer questions from families who don’t yet know about the athletic, health, and wellness possibilities offered at Rochester Rehabilitation.
The money raised by our program-based teams is reinvested back into those programs to help pay for competitions, travel, outings, events, and even philanthropic projects that participants may undertake to further their health and wellness goals.
Thank you for the opportunity to share our thoughts with you. I’d be happy to answer any questions you may have.
