2. Welcome!
The course description, course objectives, and required
texts/technology can be found on the syllabus.
This course does adhere to the academic honesty policy as
laid out in the Student Handbook .
If you require certain accommodations to participate in this
class AND are registered with Services for Students with
Disabilities (SSD), please email me. If you are not
registered with SSD, I cannot comply with
accommodations until you register with SSD.
This is an introductory presentation concerning policies
and due dates for the course.
It would be in your best interest to follow this
presentation along with your syllabus and course
schedule. This may require you to print out the two.
3. Contact Policies
The best way to contact me with any questions or
concerns for this class is through messages on
Blackboard or through email.
Please note: I do NOT check my messages/email after
7pm Eastern Standard Time (EST).
Please allow the following amount of time for
responding to your email:
Emails sent with course questions—24 hours.
Emails sent during the weekend—48 hours.
If you have an emergency, please contact me as soon as
possible (ASAP).
4. Course Policies
This course meets 5 days a week (Monday-Friday). You will
need to check the course page on a daily basis. As you
complete your assignments, you will have course discussions
with your classmates. You can find more information on
post discussions under “Discussion Posts” on Blackboard.
You will be responsible for all reading assignments, note
taking, as well as discussions. Make sure to log onto
Blackboard for course materials and subject matter.
This course is set to Eastern Standard Time and the due
dates correspond with Binghamton, New York.
I mention this fact for those of you who are in other
countries, states, etc. Please plan accordingly.
5. Course Schedule
The schedule is divided into weekly assignments. All
assignments are due on the week they are given.
For example, for this week (May 27-May 30), you need
to do the readings listed under Week One.
Please keep in mind that the assignments are ongoing.
This means, you will use constantly reuse the readings
throughout the course. Just because you have finished
reading the assignment does not mean you can forget
about it.
Also, if you feel overwhelmed about the readings,
please make sure you read the first work listed, then
the assigned readings.
6. Discussions and Participation
Please look to the syllabus to see how discussion and
participation are factored into your grade.
The syllabus also contains a discussion post rubric
concerning your primary discussion post AND your two
responses to two different classmates.
Spelling, punctuation, and grammar will all contribute to
your grade in discussion posts. Please proofread and type
and spell check your response. One trick is to type your
response into a word processor BEFORE typing the
response onto Blackboard.
Due to the classroom-like nature of the discussion boards,
discussions cannot be made up. This means I do not accept
any late posts.
7. Discussion Posts
By Monday, at 11:59pm (Eastern Standard Time,
EST), I will post a question concerning the class (either
the readings or viewings). You are then required to post
a 100 to 175 word response in 48 hours (i.e.,
Wednesday at 11:59pm, EST).
By Friday, at 11:59pm (EST), you will need to respond
to two (2) of your classmates’ initial posts. Responses
must be 75-125 words.
Breakdown:
Initial post (1): 100 to 175 words, due on Wednesday,
11:59pm, EST.
Response posts (2): 75 to 125 words, respond to two (2)
of your classmates’ initial post, due on Friday, at
11:59pm (EST).
8. Discussion Posts: Week One
There is confusion on week one discussion posts. Here, I
will clarify.
The “Welcome” discussion: make sure to respond to one
classmate by Friday, May 30th, at 11:59pm, EST.
“Week One” discussion: Initial Post due by Monday, June
2nd, at 11:59pm, EST; Response posts (remember: 2 posts)
due by Friday, June 6th, at 11:59pm, EST.
“Week Two” discussion: Initial Post due by Wednesday,
June 4th, at 11:59pm, EST; Response posts (remember: 2
posts) due by Friday, June 6th, at 11:59pm, EST).
I only require this of you since “Week One” and “Week Two”
are very closely related to each other.
The rest of the weekly discussion posts should be done as
according to the syllabus policies.
9. Midterm and Final Exam
The midterm and final exam will be given during class. They will
both comprise of multiple choice, identification, and short answer.
Your study review sheet for the midterm and final exam is already
prepared and labeled as “Course Schedule.” In other words, treat
the “Course Schedule” as your study sheet for both the midterm
and final exam.
Late midterm and final exams are not accepted.
Any use of materials other than those listed on the “Course Schedule”
will result in FAILURE of the exam.
Midterm exam will be released to Blackboard on Monday, June
9th. The midterm is due Wednesday, June 11th, at 11:59pm (EST).
Final exam will be released on Friday, June 27th. The final exam
is due Sunday, June 29th, at 11:59pm (EST).
