I chose John Grisham because, even though he was born in Arkansas, he grew up in North
Mississippi about two hours North of where we currently are. Writing was never interesting to him
until his job as a lawyer brought on interesting topics. His life, how he got in to writing, and his
accomplishments are interesting to say the least. John Ray Grisham, Jr., the second of five children,
was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and raised in the South (Harris). He lived in Arkansas, Louisiana
and Mississippi while he was growing up; and, whenever they moved to a new town his mother,
Wanda Grisham, made sure to get the children library cards to encourage reading instead of
watching television (Harris). He wanted to play professional baseball, so instead of focusing on
studies, in his early college years, he concentrated on sports and later decided to become an

victim is African American when, in reality, there was two Caucasian victims and one African

A law student named Darby Shaw writes a brief about who she suspects is the killer and in the long
run, she turns out to be correct in her accusations. The government official happens to be the
President of the United States, and he is actually friends with the person behind the murders and
tries to ignore and cover up the brief because of this. Even more importantly the person behind the
murders had contributed money to the President's platform and was part of the reason why he was
elected. The President knew that if the media got a hold of this information the public might not

Saltwater Effects on the Wetlands In John Grisham's The Pelican Brief, He brings up oil and gas
companies drilling in the wetlands, which is destroying them, and I decided to investigate further
about how these companies have been damaging the environment. The main way that the wetlands
are being killed is from the salt water that is intruding into the marshes from the canals, that gas and
oil companies use, are the way that most salt water gets so deep inside the wetlands (Barnowski).

"The state's many salt water lakes were once extensions of the sea that become cut off by ridges of
sand or deposits of silt" (Colten). This basically means that there are salt marshes that were already
in the wetlands and that weren't hurting anything. They are just there because the Mississippi pulled
silt or sand down to the ocean and it built up to create salt water marshes and then plants that could
handle the salt water grew and salt water creatures also started to inhabit the area. The marshes that
were just extensions of the ocean are harmless to the wetlands but when canals bring in salt water
they damage the other marshes that aren't supposed to have salt in them. When salt water invades
the freshwater marshes, the plants start dying off because the plants can't live in the salty conditions.

The Pelican Brief is about a law student named Darby Shaw who writes a legal brief called the
Pelican Brief. This brief was just a theory on why she believes two Supreme Court justices were
killed. This theory ends up being true and now she is a target. Politics played a huge role in the
storyline of the Pelican Brief. The importance of politics in this storyline is that the reason for Darby
to be a target on an assassin list is because of how she wrote against, a man trying to have politics

Dignity is often defined as an individual's deservedness to be respected and treated humanely, as an
individual possessing worthiness at the most general level. From my perspective, dignity is the
nourishment and affirmation of one's self–worth; in other words, fuel that every human possesses
and should have preserved to remain fully human. However, prominent 19th century social
reformers like Jeremy Bentham were critical of the notion that prisoners ought to possess declared
rights. Bentham thought it was naïve to reason that declared rights could exist outside the law, and
his criticism derives from a theoretical commitment to a system where law, punishment and proper
government are erected through legislation. Conversely, today our corrections system is aiming at
focusing more so on human dignity than in past years. In Brown V. Plata, Anthony Kennedy
reasoned that dignity should be the foundation of our American Criminal Justice system. As I will
discuss in the following paragraphs, Brown V. Plata has allowed for a number of substantial
improvements in the moral and ethical treatment of incarcerated individuals. Additionally, I will
interpret the view of human dignity throughout early and modern America by offering a critical
analysis on felon disenfranchisement, solitary confinement, and the supermax in Modern America.
To begin, I'll provide a brief account of dignity, incorporating the ideologies of Anthony Kennedy

The Wetlands In Grisham's novel, The Pelican Brief, he presents a case where an organization
attempts to protect the coastal marshes of Louisiana against the selfish oil companies and citizens
that wish to destroy it for money. This is a tremendous concern that people deal with in America.

The differences and the similarities between the novel "The Pelican Brief" by John Grisham and the
movie "The Pelican Brief" by Alan J. Pakula film. There were maybe similarities between the novel
and the movie. The story line and plot were basically the same in both the novel and the movie.
Then there were also many differences when the novel was made in to a movie. As in most cases
when a novel is made in to a movie there are certain things that are left out in the movie version.

The scene in the novel where all the porno cinemas were bombed and burned to the ground was
somewhat important in the fact that it showed to state of anarchy our country is in, in this novel. The
movie neglected to use that scene in to the movie version of "The Pelican Brief." The burning down
of the porno cinemas gave an example and showed how the "Underground Military" worked. This in
a sense excluded them from the list of suspects do to there expert use of explosives. If they had
indeed were the killers of the two Chief Justices they most likely would of stuck to there area of

are introduced to more characters and there involvement in the story is explained. The movie doesn't
really introduce u as well as the novel does and this makes it harder to follow what is going on in the
movie version. It is harder in a movie to introduce a character but it seemed that it was poorly don in
"The Pelican Brief" movie version. I can understand why its easer for a novel to describe how and
what they what you to know about a particular character. Now in a movie it's your own perception
that you make of a character.
The perception that the novel is usually better than the movie version in this case is true; I preferred

It is hard to believe that once upon a time people vehemently fought against interracial unions in
some misguided endeavor to protect the sanctity of marriage. Not only were interracial marriages
frowned upon, but until Loving versus Virginia in 1967, they were actually considered illegal in
many states and were punishable with jail time (Justia). Despite all the initial opposition, in the last
decade interracial marriages have been steadily increasing. According to the United States 2010
Census, interracial marriages have increased 28% since the year 2000. Now, one in twelve married
couples is an interracial couple. Considering that race is socially constructed and that there is no
biological evidence to prove that it otherwise is not, it is inspiring to see more and more couples
disregard racial barriers and merely see the person rather than the color of their skin. It is
disheartening, however, to see that Hollywood films have not taken a similar approach to adequately

corrections. Every state utilizes different types of classification method to classify their inmates.
Penal institutions in the U.S. have evolved tremendously in terms of sentencing procedures,
decisions and classifications. Studies from Clear et al. (2013) indicate that offenders in the United
States, which consists of men, women, and juveniles, were all confined together in the same prison
in the early 1800's (p. 296). Modern correctional facilities do not mix the entire population of men,
women, and juvenile offenders in the same jail or prison, but rather, in separate correctional
facilities with different levels of security and monitoring. In our current era, correctional facilities
for men, women, and juveniles have rehabilitative programs and modern identification systems that
have the capability to measure "static risk factors such as criminal history or severity of current
crime" (Christensen, 2008, p. 18). This case study will examine Pelican Bay State prison's racial

antipathy toward the occupying power." This lingering distrust and backlash against Northern
control and the recently freed slaves is one of, it not the most, pivotal factor in the formation of the
South as distinct political arena with its own views, rules, voting habits, and culture. Many
Southerners felt that to face the terms that congress had demanded for reentry into the Union were
tantamount to submission, degrading, and invited further demands and to bow before them was to
lose the honor of the South. In face of this mentality the North preceded to vote in the
Reconstruction acts, import political supporters from the North, and enforce military control in the
Southern states. These outsiders were known as scalawags and the enforced Republican rule lead to
the now freed slaves being vilified and equivocated with leading the Republican Party. The
occurrences of violence against the newly freed slaves was more endemic than ever before. A
reactionary faction arose in Louisiana that eventually resulted in its government being liquidated
and the state placed into a military district with Texas and under the direction of Union General
Sheridan. This resulted in a new state constitution which was ratified in 1868. The constitution that
emerged provided for equal citizenship, the black franchise, equal public accommodations, and
public education. However, this new government under military control was heavily supported by
the African American Republican vote and faced extreme opposition by the Redeemers and
paramilitary groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. By 1874 the support of Reconstruction was
crumbling in the face of the opposition of the South and the weariness of the North. While New
Orleans was a Republican stronghold, the rest of the state was slowly, if violently returning to

assassination, the reader can connect the political aspects of the book to a real life situation, and
with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, the reader can see how sometimes your very own
opinions can get you killed (Grisham). The reader can also compare John Grisham himself to both
Kennedy and King because both Kennedy and Grisham were politicians and both King and Grisham
were activists ("John Grisham"). Through these connections, the reader can better understand the
book and Grisham himself. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963,
after almost three years as president (Wilentz, Sean). He was shot and killed by Lee Harvey Oswald

regarded as nonverbal forms of communication. Nonverbal communication has the ability to
reinforce and reiterate what is stated verbally with sequential instead of simultaneous repeating.
