John Grisham Accomplishments
I chose John Grisham because, even though he was born in Arkansas, he grew up in North
Mississippi about two hours North of where we currently are. Writing was never interesting to him
until his job as a lawyer brought on interesting topics. His life, how he got in to writing, and his
accomplishments are interesting to say the least. John Ray Grisham, Jr., the second of five children,
was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and raised in the South (Harris). He lived in Arkansas, Louisiana
and Mississippi while he was growing up; and, whenever they moved to a new town his mother,
Wanda Grisham, made sure to get the children library cards to encourage reading instead of
watching television (Harris). He wanted to play professional baseball, so instead of focusing on
studies, in his early college years, he concentrated on sports and later decided to become an
accounting major because a baseball career was unlikely (Harris). In 1977, he graduated from
Mississippi State University with a bachelor's degree in accounting and then transferred to the
University of Mississippi, also known as Ole Miss, for law school and graduated in 1981 (Harris).

In his book, A Time to Kill, he depicts his characters as the assailants being Caucasian and the
victim is African American when, in reality, there was two Caucasian victims and one African
American assailant. There would not have been as much buzz if it had been a story about an African
American rapist. I believe because there of the acts of racism going on back then, he decided to

A law student named Darby Shaw writes a brief about who she suspects is the killer and in the long
run, she turns out to be correct in her accusations. The government official happens to be the
President of the United States, and he is actually friends with the person behind the murders and
tries to ignore and cover up the brief because of this. Even more importantly the person behind the
murders had contributed money to the President's platform and was part of the reason why he was
elected. The President knew that if the media got a hold of this information the public might not
elect him or even worse he could be impeached. In the long run, the suspect is finally caught and
indicted.
The connotation of a socioeconomic status is a demographic term which considers the combination
of social and economic factors. (Webster's Dictionary) The broken down basis for these can include
race, level of education, gender, area a person lives in, and etcetera. On the news there is often a
story about an unfair court decision, in which the jury or judge is racist or sexist, or biased. Basing a
court decision on these factors is actually illegal. The 14th Amendment of the Bill of rights says

Saltwater Effects on the Wetlands In John Grisham's The Pelican Brief, He brings up oil and gas
companies drilling in the wetlands, which is destroying them, and I decided to investigate further
about how these companies have been damaging the environment. The main way that the wetlands
are being killed is from the salt water that is intruding into the marshes from the canals, that gas and
oil companies use, are the way that most salt water gets so deep inside the wetlands (Barnowski).
Oil and gas companies are always trying to build more canals to invade different areas of the
wetlands when they find different reserves of oil and gas just like Victor Mattiece was in the Pelican

"The state's many salt water lakes were once extensions of the sea that become cut off by ridges of
sand or deposits of silt" (Colten). This basically means that there are salt marshes that were already
in the wetlands and that weren't hurting anything. They are just there because the Mississippi pulled
silt or sand down to the ocean and it built up to create salt water marshes and then plants that could
handle the salt water grew and salt water creatures also started to inhabit the area. The marshes that
were just extensions of the ocean are harmless to the wetlands but when canals bring in salt water
they damage the other marshes that aren't supposed to have salt in them. When salt water invades
the freshwater marshes, the plants start dying off because the plants can't live in the salty conditions.
"The fewer plants that are in the wetlands the more unstable the soil is because the plants' root
systems hold much of the land together" (Barnowski). "The loose soil is then more easily eroded,
which connects the vicious circle of erosion and plant loss" (Barnowski). The higher amount of

The Pelican Brief is about a law student named Darby Shaw who writes a legal brief called the
Pelican Brief. This brief was just a theory on why she believes two Supreme Court justices were
killed. This theory ends up being true and now she is a target. Politics played a huge role in the
storyline of the Pelican Brief. The importance of politics in this storyline is that the reason for Darby
to be a target on an assassin list is because of how she wrote against, a man trying to have politics

from this disease. Malaria is transmitted through the bite of a female Anopheles mosquito infected
with malaria parasites. When the parasites enter the human body, it slowly destroys the body's red
blood cells, eventually killing the patient if left without undergoing immediate treatment (Stanmeyer
2007). One of the means employed to counter the spread of malaria is through the use of DDT as an
insecticide to kill the mosquitoes before they are able to infect more people.
DDT is an organochlorine insecticide that is absorbed through surface contact and kills by poisoning

insecticides. As this chemical repels mosquitoes from areas where it has been applied, is a moderate
irritant and has toxic properties, its use has reduced the risk of disease transmission by nearly three–
quarters. Other toxic chemicals kill almost all of the mosquitoes that land on it, but also increase the

Dignity is often defined as an individual's deservedness to be respected and treated humanely, as an
individual possessing worthiness at the most general level. From my perspective, dignity is the
nourishment and affirmation of one's self–worth; in other words, fuel that every human possesses
and should have preserved to remain fully human. However, prominent 19th century social
reformers like Jeremy Bentham were critical of the notion that prisoners ought to possess declared
rights. Bentham thought it was naïve to reason that declared rights could exist outside the law, and
his criticism derives from a theoretical commitment to a system where law, punishment and proper
government are erected through legislation. Conversely, today our corrections system is aiming at
focusing more so on human dignity than in past years. In Brown V. Plata, Anthony Kennedy
reasoned that dignity should be the foundation of our American Criminal Justice system. As I will
discuss in the following paragraphs, Brown V. Plata has allowed for a number of substantial
improvements in the moral and ethical treatment of incarcerated individuals. Additionally, I will
interpret the view of human dignity throughout early and modern America by offering a critical
analysis on felon disenfranchisement, solitary confinement, and the supermax in Modern America.
To begin, I'll provide a brief account of dignity, incorporating the ideologies of Anthony Kennedy
and Michel Foucault to supplement my own account.

Every morning I am awakened by the crow of a rooster and it's not very long before my hard work
begins. Spring has come and gone, replaced by summer, and a new season means that I must till my
fields for a new set of crops. I head out with my scythe to clear the now lifeless remains of my last

and Thomas Callahan face a conflict by trying to keep their relationship feasible and completely
private. It is illegal for Callahan to be in a relationship with his student even though she is legally an
adult. He has abused his position of power as a professor by being involved in this relationship.
Callahan is known for his negligent attitude and as a result, he becomes involved in corruption. His

The Wetlands In Grisham's novel, The Pelican Brief, he presents a case where an organization
attempts to protect the coastal marshes of Louisiana against the selfish oil companies and citizens
that wish to destroy it for money. This is a tremendous concern that people deal with in America.
John Grisham wrote The Pelican Brief, in 1992 and it was one of his best selling books. Louisiana's
marshes are being destroyed and are suffering greatly because of humans. Grisham shows extensive
knowledge of the wetlands as well as the wildlife through discussing the endangered Brown Pelican
and how humans have brought it to the brink of extinction. Numberless amounts of waterfowl, birds,
and countless species that call Louisiana home are now being terrorized thanks to non–native
species, humans and a numerous amount of different causes. The Brown Pelican, Louisiana's state
bird, has been endangered until 1995, and about half of all the geese in North America spend the
winter in the coastal marshes (Elliott, Charles). Additionally, Louisiana is the leading state for the

any human contact or communication. While solitary confinement is expensive to taxpayers, it is

support this premise. The author strays from personal opinion, and rather implements external
evidence to uphold her premise. Despite this substantiated premise, the rest of Reiter's premises are
not as strongly supported. For example, Reiter explains, "The guards who staff isolation must be
enlisted. They decide which prisoners go into isolation, for how long, and under what conditions.
They see the effects of solitary confinement, and they are in a position to know how a bad situation

which the reader can compare to other assassinations in history. With former president John F.
Kennedy's assassination, the reader can connect the political aspects of the book to a real life
situation, and with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, the reader can see how sometimes

"The Pelican Brief" Novel vs. Movie
The differences and the similarities between the novel "The Pelican Brief" by John Grisham and the
movie "The Pelican Brief" by Alan J. Pakula film. There were maybe similarities between the novel
and the movie. The story line and plot were basically the same in both the novel and the movie.
Then there were also many differences when the novel was made in to a movie. As in most cases

The scene in the novel where all the porno cinemas were bombed and burned to the ground was
somewhat important in the fact that it showed to state of anarchy our country is in, in this novel. The
movie neglected to use that scene in to the movie version of "The Pelican Brief." The burning down

the notion that prisons were overcrowded and lacked medical materials to help prisoners who
struggled with mental illness was critically analyzed and eventually declared a form of cruel and

From my perspective, denying a human being medical treatment (even incarcerated peoples)
reduces their self–worth to subhuman standards. In turn, the standard by which the prison system
shapes their practices yields effects well beyond the actual prison walls. Though not always publicly
announced, prison practices often come to be known by the bulk of the general public. Subjecting
prisoners to sub–human standards of living has an indirect and perhaps subconscious effect on not
only prisoners and those working within prisoners, but to all who become aware of such standards

Southerners felt that to face the terms that congress had demanded for reentry into the Union were
tantamount to submission, degrading, and invited further demands and to bow before them was to
lose the honor of the South. In face of this mentality the North preceded to vote in the
Reconstruction acts, import political supporters from the North, and enforce military control in the
Southern states. These outsiders were known as scalawags and the enforced Republican rule lead to
the now freed slaves being vilified and equivocated with leading the Republican Party. The
occurrences of violence against the newly freed slaves was more endemic than ever before. A
reactionary faction arose in Louisiana that eventually resulted in its government being liquidated
and the state placed into a military district with Texas and under the direction of Union General
Sheridan. This resulted in a new state constitution which was ratified in 1868. The constitution that
emerged provided for equal citizenship, the black franchise, equal public accommodations, and
public education. However, this new government under military control was heavily supported by
the African American Republican vote and faced extreme opposition by the Redeemers and
paramilitary groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. By 1874 the support of Reconstruction was
crumbling in the face of the opposition of the South and the weariness of the North. While New

  • 1. John Grisham Accomplishments I chose John Grisham because, even though he was born in Arkansas, he grew up in North Mississippi about two hours North of where we currently are. Writing was never interesting to him until his job as a lawyer brought on interesting topics. His life, how he got in to writing, and his accomplishments are interesting to say the least. John Ray Grisham, Jr., the second of five children, was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and raised in the South (Harris). He lived in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi while he was growing up; and, whenever they moved to a new town his mother, Wanda Grisham, made sure to get the children library cards to encourage reading instead of watching television (Harris). He wanted to play professional baseball, so instead of focusing on studies, in his early college years, he concentrated on sports and later decided to become an accounting major because a baseball career was unlikely (Harris). In 1977, he graduated from Mississippi State University with a bachelor's degree in accounting and then transferred to the University of Mississippi, also known as Ole Miss, for law school and graduated in 1981 (Harris). The main way that the wetlands are being killed is from the salt water that is intruding into the marshes from the canals, that gas and oil companies use, are the way that most salt water gets so deep inside the wetlands (Barnowski). Nonverbal Workplace Communication Nonverbal Workplace Communication Introduction Most often, nonverbal communication reflects gestures, posture, body language level of eye contact and facial expressions. Voice quality such as rhythm, timbre, pitch, intonation and the level of stress articulated in the verbal tone are also regarded as nonverbal forms of communication. Nonverbal communication has the ability to reinforce and reiterate what is stated verbally with sequential instead of simultaneous repeating.
