Discuss Athletics as a Pre-Industrial Popular Recreation...
Athletics had relative importance in pre–industrial Britain mostly taking place at traditional fairs and
festivals. For example a wake was seen as a great social occasion whereby mainly the lower class
men would compete in events such as stick fighting, running, climbing a greasy pole and wrestling.
These activities were seen as 'athletic' events and were an opportunity for the lower class men to
show off their power and strength to the women. In addition women had the opportunity to take part
in events such as smock races. Festivals and fairs such as these would take place on church holy
days such as Easter and were seen as a chance for celebration and enjoyment. Prime examples of

However, athletics developed dramatically as a postindustrial rational recreation. The industrial
revolution ended the traditional festivals and fairs as people moved to bigger cities in search of jobs.
Instead, professional athletes became more popular especially in the cities and the sport modernized
significantly. There were a number of purpose build specialist tracks by the end of the 1850s, which
lead to an increase in the number of competitions that took place. These competitions would often
have extremely large amounts of spectators of up to 20,000, helped by the improvements in
transport such as the railways. Wagering of pre–industrial Britain was replaced with a more
sophisticated type of gambling whereby people would bet on the winners of each race. Athletics as a
rational recreation involved both the upper and lower classes. The upper and new middle classes
were generally amateurs and would compete for the enjoyment and ability to 'show off' to friends
whereas the working class would become professionals and ran to make money. However the ex–
university gentleman did not want to compete against professionals and founded the Amateur
Athletics Club in 1866 in order to exclude the working class professionals from competing against
them. In 1880 the Amateur Athletics Association was formed which then recognized all areas of
society, and therefore the exclusion clause was

Scheduling Classes, Athletic Events, and Extra Circular Activities
We are all given 24 hours in a day and in an organized system each hour is given a category or
name. An Athletic Director has many responsibilities in managing a department that has many
activities occurring each day. These activities are physical education classes, practice schedules and
locations, meeting special needs students, coordinating game schedules for each sport, and finding
time to mentor those within the department. Each area presents its own challenge to synergistically
work with the available facilities that are available. Therefore, to be effective in creating a physical
education program and athletic department, it is imperative that the athletic ... Show more content

Adaptive Physical Education for Special Needs Students Meeting all of the needs of students today
is a challenging task, especially in physical education with students that have special needs and
physical limitations. All students today have a right to participate in physical education classes and
schools have a responsibility to ensure everyone is given the opportunity (Aiello, 2014). Adaptive
Physical Education class offers a great opportunity for those with limitations to be in a safe
environment and participate just like the rest of the students (C. Curtis, personal communication,

A Career in Sports Marketing Essay
A Career in Sports Marketing The business of sports is one of the fastest growing industries in the
country. All over the world, many people participate as players and spectators in a variety of
sporting activities, creating opportunities for the marketing of a company's goods and services. An
important part of the business of sports is sports marketing, which revolves around understanding
consumer behavior and motivating target markets to purchase goods and services. Sports marketing
at Clemson University has many different aspects ranging from sports and technology and sport law
to sponsorship and sports economics. "Sports marketing is simply any sales or publicity–related
activity associated with an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not only do the "major leagues" participate in the marketing process but so do the smaller, "minor
leagues" do as well. Every athletic organization, big or small, needs sports marketing for its
survival. Sports marketing is needed because it helps the athletic organizations obtain profit, which
is needed for survival. "For a promotion to be successful, it must be profitable. And to be profitable,
it must enhance some, if not all, of the following goals: 1. Paid attendance, 2. Corporate tie–ins, 3.
Sponsor value, and 4. Media coverage" (Helitzer 317). Promotions must increase the number of
people at the event, or paid attendance, it also must enhance corporate tie–ins, which are signs or
give–a–ways at the stadium. Sponsor value, or the value perceived by the sponsor must also be
enhanced along with media coverage. Media coverage is enhanced by sending the local or national
media sources bulletins about the events or by having press conferences. A strategy that a sports
marketer must use is to stagger the promotional gimmicks throughout the event. If one staggers the
promotion, then the audience is always aware of the event and looking out for the promotions.
Another objective of sports marketing is creating sales. "The modern sports marketer is charged
with one simple responsibility: to increase the sources of revenue" (Westerbeek 6). This includes
obtaining more sponsors

Collegiate Athletic Culture
The wisdom and precise role of collegiate athletic programs within a university has provided major
discussion topics for faculty and university administrators throughout the last century. Collegiate
athletics plays an essential part of a university and the community that are within the area of the
university. Collegiate athletics bring an enthusiastic sports culture that is seen as a way to bring the
university and community together as a family. However, not all universities find themselves in a
situation where their student bodies and communities are coming together to support the athletic
events. Southern Illinois University (SIU), located in Carbondale, Illinois, lack the sport culture that

An alarming trend has started to show over the last five years, where student attendance at college
athletics has been declining. Fewer students are starting to not show up to home games and even
more students are beginning to leave early. According to a study conducted by the Wall Street
Journal, the average student attendance at college football games has dropped by 7.1 percent since
2009. The drop of student attendance is extremely unsettling for universities and most importantly
college athletic departments for several reasons to name a few; less chances of developing new fans,
lower amounts of concession stand purchases, and fewer merchandise sales. Current students are
also relied upon as alumni to be future season ticket holders which is a key driver for collegiate
athletics business models. Along with the business aspect of students attending athletic events,
college administrators and coaches are alarmed in the decline of attendance because the noisy
students help gives their team that home–field advantage that is such aspect that helps football and

Who Had More Influence On Shaping The Athletics / Sports

Who had more influence on shaping the athletics / sports past and present in the western world: the
ANCIENT GREEKS or the ROMAN EMPIRE? Explain your choice in detail.
In the Western World, the people who had more of an influence on the shaping of athletics and
sports in the past and the present happened to be the Roman Empire.
Although most to all of the sporting activities and views on athletics did originate from the Ancient
Greeks, the Roman Empire had a monumental impact on not only the advancement of sport and
athletics in their time but also to the sport and athletics we know today.
The Roman Empire has some of the same qualities that the spectators, athletes, businessmen, and
military soldiers of today show to support the evolution of sport and athletics itself.
Some of these being that the Roman Empire showed identical mentality on everything sport,
athletic, spectator, and more that have been translated to modern day sports and athletics.
In addition to this, they did have the same outlook on women participating in sports and athletics
that were very popular when sports came back into society in the 1900's. They did take women's
involvement to the extreme but all in all very close.
Following alongside these events was also the creation of the coliseum, which the people in this
present day also find to be very important to sports and athletics, obviously with more of them

Research Paper On Track And Field
Track and Field is a True Athlete's Sport Track and field is an ancient Olympic game which began in
776 B.C. There are various events in this sport, track and field. There are also a number of track
events, as well as field events. All events require the use of energy and concentration, especially the
use of techniques and with these three elements, one shall succeed. In track and field, it's mandatory
to take note of the stadium due to the various markings. So therefore, track and field is a true
athlete's sport, due to its many components and elements. There are six different track events. Track
events vary from sprints, middle distance, long distance, relays, as well as walks. Sprints require the
usage of the starting blocks. The starting blocks are head starts to give each runner a fair start and
they've been used since 1937. Sprints are run as far as 800m, and only 500m are run in lanes.

Essay on Prayer At Public School Athletic Events
Prayer at Public School Athletic Events
–Can We Get a Moment of–
–Silence Here?–
If public schools are just that, public, then why is the issue of prayer in school such a prominent and
controversial debate especially when most of the public wants prayer in school?
The first amendment grants the right to free speech, yet everyday students are punished and
ridiculed for their beliefs. Is this a fair system? Every person has his or her own rituals and for many
students prayer is one of them.

Who wouldn't want any given soldier to make it back?
"My heart's for it, but I think a moment of silence is just as effective." Said Olins Hooks,
a high school football fan. That idea is totally possible. No one would feel as though a faith is being
"pushed" on them, and at the same time everyone could choose if they would like to say
a
prayer or a wish in their mind, if they wished. Something such as this could be a possible solution
for schools who choose to lead a "prayer" type situation. Creating a "universal–
type prayer," is a difficult task, considering you have to possibly incorporate hundreds of
religious sects.
"Do you think that is it fair and constitutional for a student to take the microphone at a public
high school football game and leave the crowd in a prayer or a moment of silence?" When
posed with this question, Juan Acosta, who happens to be the son of a Catholic priest in San Diego,
had this to say on the matter "I don't think it belongs there, maybe a moment of silence, but
not a prayer. I think it's constitutional but not very considerate."
So where do you draw the line for this? The use of a moment–of–silence or

Personal Statement : Athletic Director
When I was deciding what I wanted to choose for my major, I thought about things that I love doing.
One thing in life that I have passion for is sports, whether it be playing sports or helping others
develop their skills for their sport. My long term goal for a career, I want to be an Athletic Director
for a college. In order to become an Athletic Director there are certain step that someone needs to do
in college to try and have the best chance at getting their dream job. Athletic Director is not a career
that a person just graduated from college and gets hired by a school, they must work their way up
from an entry level job and slowly moves their way up. Job Duties Being an athletic director is a job
that has many duties because they have to oversee every sports team. Here is a list of responsibilities
for an Athletic Director from the School District of Auburndale in Wisconsin. 1. Prepare a master
budget and supervise equipment inventories. 2. Secure and file the paperwork for equipment lease
requests involving the athletic department. 3. Prepare a master sports calendar that includes
conference and non–conference games/events. 4. Coordinate gym, building and athletic field use
with the district office and maintain the district building use calendar. 5. Coordinate gym use for
practices and games and give final clearance for the use of either the gym or the athletic field. 6.

The Awful Possibility of Schools Cutting Athletic Programs...
Schools everywhere give students opportunities to participate in sports by participating in athletic
programs. With budget cuts, the administration is considering the possibility of eliminating all
athletic programs. Admittedly, eliminating all athletic programs would save Lexington some money,
but, on the other hand, it opens up opportunities for students who might not have a chance
elsewhere. In fact, it has been proven that students who were involved in sports as teenagers are
healthier as adults. Furthermore, school sports help kids bond and, moreover, show school spirit.
The fact remains, athletic programs continuously show improvement in students more than
weaknesses in the school. Athletic programs create opportunities for ... Show more content on

Nobody denies cutting athletic programs will help with budget problems, but if people, like the First
Lady, are saying our country's health is important, then the administration should create an
alternative solution. The children and students in the world today will define the country in the near
future; therefore, eliminating those athletic programs will cause a devastating blow for the future of
America. Moreover, if Lexington's administration believes in ruining the future of America, then
they should vote to remove school athletic programs. In conclusion, without school athletic
programs, Lexington could ruin students' health not only today, but also in the future. School athletic
events have always been a place students can show school spirit and bond together. First, school
athletic events are a place where students come together and cheer on their school not only to
support the team, but also to show other schools that Lexington Local School is bonded together. An
example of this was shown during a girls' soccer OCC tournament; many students came and cheered
on the girls throughout the whole game. Not only did they cheer in the stands, but after the winning
goal was scored during a shoot–out the entire student section ran down to the middle of the field to
help Lexington's girls soccer celebrate. In that moment the students bonded together and showed the
other school that Lexington, as a unit, won, displaying school spirit. Without athletic

Descriptive Essay About Running
Running is a sport that is both physically and mentally demanding. The thought of running for many
is dreadful, but when I think of running I think of how free it makes me feel. There are some people
who become distance runners just to stay in shape or because they're not good at other sports. While
I do enjoy the fact that running is a great way to stay in shape, I also see it as something I can put
my emotions into and a chance to prove to myself how strong I am. My love admiration for running
started when I was young, now every time I go for a run I am reminded of the little girl who
dreamed of running.
When I was in elementary school, my parents forced my brothers to join the Topeka High cross
country team as a way to keep them busy. Cross country is a sport in which individuals from teams
run a long distance race on natural terrain, the races are usually 3 miles. As soon as I went to their
first race I became fascinated with the sport and team. The team seemed so inviting and acted just
like a family who had been together forever, despite their being so many different types of people on
it. At every race I would get to see hundreds of young people, who compared to me looked like
giants, running their hearts out, with the common goal of crossing the finish line. To me there was
something so astonishing about it and I knew that when I became a high schooler I would run on the
Topeka High cross country team. My dreams of running went far beyond just high school

Essay On Athletic Director Duties
When comparing the list of athletic duties across the four schools, we found more similarities than
differences. In our group we have two public schools which consist of Scoggins Middle School in
McKinney, TX with 1,100 students and 7 sports teams, and Lakin High School in Lakin, Kansas
with 400 students and 15 sports teams. We also have two private schools; Loyola Academy located
in Wilmette, IL has 2,000 students with 24 sports teams, and Cary Academy (Middle and High
School) located in Cary, NC has 800 students and 49 sports teams.
A key similarity between the four schools is scheduling. One of the main athletic director duties is
the scheduling of both home and away games, scheduling referees, and scheduling transportation for
away games. This important duty for any athletic director can take up a large part of their time
depending on how many teams they have per season.
Another area where we saw similarities is in staff management. In our four schools, it is the role of
the athletic director to hire the coaching staff, provide the necessary training, provide feedback and
guidance, and to help mediate conflicts with parents and student athletes. The ... Show more content

One of the differences we observed was in budget management. Although every school's athletic
director is responsible for creating and managing a budget; where they get the funds to run the
program differs. Fundraising in the private schools does not always fall on the athletic director. For
instance, in one of the private schools listed, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is responsible for
raising money to help fund the athletic program. In this case, the athletic director does not need to
allocate any funds for fundraising events or marketing. In the public schools, athletic directors are
responsible for raising money through fundraising events, booster clubs, and parent fees to help pay

Equipment managers may seem corny or inadequate, but without them it would be difficult for your
team to compete. According to the Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA) (What Is

helmets; checks, clean, and inspect uniforms and equipment to reduce wear and risk of injury while
preserving the life of the equipment and garments as part of the budget management process; and
establish a comprehensive accountability system that includes inventory, reconditioning, and
storage. Equipment managers play a key role in intercollegiate athletics, but sports information
directors are important as well. According to Staurowsky and Abney, sports information directors
are responsible for both technical and management functions. Sports information directors basically
make sure to spread the word of an event coming up. They hand out flyers, game programs,
newsletters and a lot more stuff. Senior woman administrator is the highest ranking female

Should Athletic Directors Be Organised And Proactive
I agree with you that athletic directors must be organized and proactive. First, they must be
organized and communicate effectively so volunteers understand their job descriptions (Cramartie,
2013). They must also make security plans well in advance of major sporting events to ensure
proper coverage. One way athletic directors can proactively enhance security and safety is
promoting sportsmanship within their program. According to Hoch, athletic directors must "set the
expectations and then communicate these parameters to everyone involved in your program –
athletes, coaches, parents and fans" ("National", n.d., p. 2). Athletic directors must develop
expectations and then enforce the policy ("National", n.d., p. 2). Athletic directors and coaches

Athletic Training What are athletic trainers (ATs)? What type of work do athletic trainers do? Those
are two common question that a lot of people ask to themselves. Most people believe that athletic
trainers are just people who help trained the team in which they have to basically tell them how to

who care for the improvement of the athlete by preventing any sport related injuries and helping the

In college athletics, especially in a marketing department, the end goal can easily be convoluted.
While the primary goal of an athletic department is to serve student–athletes, at times it seems like
revenue generation and serving fans are just as important. It can be challenging at times to

and game presentation plans, our goals always include generating more revenue and created the best
experience possible for fans. While these achievements are necessary, at times the need to make
more money for the department overshadows other purposes for marketing athletic events. All
decisions college athletic departments make should be in an effort to uplift each student–athlete. I
(and other sports marketers) do not get much direct contact with student–athletes, and the best way
we are able to serve them is to get as many fans as possible to their athletic events to cheer them on

and women have made an effort to come together to bring attention to the downgrading of women in
sports to earn acknowledgement and respect. With this, history has described men and women's
sports as not equal but as history continues, women defeat the odds yet again. Women participating
in athletic activities and sports date back millennia. Stories of women playing ball dates back to 800
BC in Homer's works of The Iliad. Until the 1870's, women never had the luxury of sports classified
for women specifically. Multitasking was a high concern. People thought that each person had a set
amount of energy and multitasking would deplete this energy rapidly that could cause harm to that
individual. Women were highly encouraged to limit their activity so they would not fatigue their
selves so quickly to avoid harm to their body. Doctors of this time believed this over–exertion could
damage reproductive organs, decrease fertility rate, excessive stimulate emotions to the extent of a
nervous breakdown, and even bizarre as decrease in a woman's sexual inhibition if she excessively
indulged in sports (Cahn par. 4). There were fashionable activities such as horseback riding for
women in the early 1800's

Prevention Of Concussions And Athletic Events Safer Essay
The skull of human body holds the most valuable organ, the brain. This is the control center of the
body. It is evident that injury to the brain is life threatening in many ways. One specific injury that is
becoming more prevalent in the United States is concussions. Particularly concussions are becoming
very prevalent in young children, teens, and professional athletes. A study in July of 2016 shared
that roughly 1.1 to 1.9 million concussions occur annually in the U.S. to children who are 18 and
younger (Bryan, Rowhani–Rahbar, Comstock, & Rivar, 2016, p.1). Concussions can lead to
traumatic brain injuries (TBI), which can lead to mortality (HEADS UP, 2016). Center for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) shared that over 138 people die from TBI on a daily basis in the U.S.
(HEADS UP, 2016). Public health is bringing awareness all over the U.S. to advocate prevention of
concussions and make athletic events safer. Programs are being implemented to educate parents,
coaches, and young athletes in hopes of concussion reduction. Concussions affect over 1.1 million
American people yearly; this subject should not be taken lightly.
What is a concussion? According to the CDC, "A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury–or
TBI–caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and
brain to move rapidly back and forth" (HEADS UP, 2016). Due the movement of the brain, many
concussions result in the brain cells becoming damaged resulting in

The Sports Of An Athletic Games
The hosting of an athletic games is a mammoth task that requires in–depth planning and huge
amounts of labor. In modern times, and arguably more so in Ancient Greece, sports must be viewed
as the intersection of many eclectic parts of society. While running an athletic event on this scale, we
can break the planning chronologically into three main categories that will determine success:
attracting an audience, the actual logistics of the game, and judging and the distribution of prizes.
Each of these topics has many facets which must all be taken into consideration for our games to
successfully attract people and sustain the popularity of the sanctuary and its God.
Attracting large audiences is the crux of putting on a successful games. To do this, we must
acknowledge one very crucial fact about sports in Ancient Greece – it is a result of, maybe even an
extension of, religion. Therefore, if we are to host a successful event, we must first create a strong
religious element to our sanctuary. For this I would suggest the creation of an oracle at our
sanctuary. Oracles, such as the Pythia at Delphi, provide a steady influx of people while also
increasing the popularity of the God with each prophecy (Jones). This will feed directly into the
popularity of our event. Religious fervor could be further augmented by the creation of a large
monument of some kind. Just like the gold and ivory statue of Zeus at Olympia which drew in large
crowds, our idol would serve as an

If you or anyone close to you plays sports, you know that injuries happen very often. In high school
athletics, there are approximately 2,000,000 injuries, 500,000 doctor visits, and 30,000
hospitalizations each year. I have chosen to pursue a career as an athletic trainer because I have
played baseball for the past 14 years and I have seen many of the common injuries that athletes
sustain. There are many pros and cons of working in this field. In this speech I will bring some of
them to your attention. Athletic trainers are medical experts who care for athletic injuries using
physical therapy equipment, techniques, and medication. They also evaluate an athlete's readiness to
play and give participation clearance when necessary. Some responsibilities of an athletic trainer

To work in this field, you must have a tolerance for some injuries that can sometimes get pretty
nasty, such as blood or a broken bone. Some athletic trainers are exposed to temperatures as high as
100 degrees or as low as 20 degrees for long periods of time. This job also requires that you stand
about ‚Öì of the time. You are a better fit for this job if you like the outdoors because athletic
trainers are outside during most sporting events or practices. At times, it is necessary for athletic
trainers to have to run during an emergency. Hours for an athletic trainer are usually about 3–8.
Sometimes these hours may vary according to what sporting event they are working and if it is a

foot race was six hundred feet long. That event was the only athletic game for the first thirteen

Stereotypes Of Women In Sports Essay
Every week, a new issue of Sports Illustrated magazine is distributed throughout the world, showing
a provocative image of a woman athlete, on the front cover or inside, barely clothed, belittling a
women's athletic ability in their professional sport. In different aspects of the world today women
are underrepresented such as political positions, STEM and most importantly sports. Even though
Title IX has increased females participation in sports there is still a lack of support of women's
athletic events. The main focus of this review is to examine how women athletes are portrayed in the
media compared to men athletes.

Many athletes are stereotyped by gender because the commentators are the ones speaking to the
public while the public get familiarized to these stereotypes. Many commentators comment very
stereotypical comments but to the public it is not very shocking due to the multitude of times it has
occurred which they have grown familiar to. One of such was by a commentator , Colin Murray said
during the Olympics that "the ultimate athlete would have 'the stamina of Mo [Farah], the speed of
[Usain] Bolt, the leap of [Greg] Rutherford and the bottom of Jess Ennis'" (Stanistreet). To a
professional female athlete this was a very gender stereotyped comment due to the fact that only one
of the four athletes mentioned was a woman and that the provocative part of the athlete, the butt,
was given to a female athlete as the ultimate athlete. Through a study on the NCAA National
Championship Games for men and women basketball, they have discovered that the commentators
constantly mark the women's game repeating phrases like, " '...some of the best women's college
basketball teams..', '...is a legend in women's basketball...', and '...this NCAA women's semifinal is
brought to you by ... '" (Messner and Duncan). The word women was periodically brought up during

Prayer at Public School Athletic Events

If public schools are just that, public, then why is the issue of prayer in school such a prominent and

The first amendment grants the right to free speech, yet everyday students are punished and
ridiculed for their beliefs. Is this a fair system? Every person has his or her own rituals and for many
students prayer is one of them.
Agreeing with this matter is Andy Johnson, a current high school football player who says, that

state." An ABC News poll said that two–thirds of Americans think that students should be allowed
to lead such prayers (In school–sponsored sporting events.) Doesn't that say something?
One surprising fact that is that presidential candidates are both FOR prayer in school.
Republican George W. Bush is said to "support student–led prayer." The 94 percent of voters in
Texas' Republican primary approved a "non binding resolution backing student–initiated prayer at
school sporting events." That's sure to keep Bush's opinion going in one direction. And in a written
statement, Democrat Al Gore said that "allowing students to engage in voluntary individual or group
prayer is not only permissible but worthy of protection." All in all the final votes are in the hands of
Justices Anthony M. Kennedy and Sandra Day O'Connor. There's also another issue of pray at
football games questioning if football games are extracurricular or part of the school system.
It appears that prayer in public schools is heading in one direction – to the top. More and more
people are participating and it feeds the decisions of the Supreme Court. Someday soon it's hoped to

On the Island at present the MSR have provided all primary schools with only two of these

Each coach must assist in performing regularly scheduled facility inspections to insure safety.
When using outdoor and indoor facilities, it is important to performed scheduled inspections to
insure safety for the student athletes, coaches and spectators. Although every sport have a different
safety need as it pertains to facilities. That's why it is important for facilities to have an inspection
before the spectators are allowed in the venue. Coaches must also be aware of the athletics health
when it pertains to heat exhaustion. Coaches also have a duty to protect the students from injury

something new for me. Since I was 5'7" and could jump fairly high my main event was jumping
hurdles. I also did the long jump and triple jump as well. Let's just say one day after jumping one of
my hurdles it did not end well at all. My first week at practice was very difficult for me, let's not
forget it was my freshman year. The conditioning week is mandatory to go to in the first week.
Running up and down hills, running endless laps around the track, ... Show more content on

It was so many different teams there and so many new people that I have never seen before. I sat up
in the stands nervous, butterflies in my stomach, feeling like I would vomit at any minute. I watched
people warm up on the sidelines and on the track. Some girls in the upper class were already
running their practice jumps, so I joined them also. I lowered the hurdles and completed my leg
warm ups. I heard the girl on the speaker say "first call for 100–meter hurdles", I went and sat down
so I would not waste all of my energy and be worn out before my race. After the second and third
call for 100m hurdles, I went to the starting line. Since I was in the first heat I went first. The
starting line was my enemy at that moment. I got in a starting position and waited for the sound of
the gunshot. The coach from the other school got on the sideline and said, "Ready, Set, *pow*."
That was the moment when I knew I had to take off as fast as I could to beat everyone in the race.
My first few steps were powerful. I got right in front of my first hurdle and jumped over it perfectly.
I glanced to the left and right of me quickly and saw that there were no one by my side. I felt good at
this time. I kept running through all ten hurdles just fine, thinking that I had just won the race.
Everything changed when I got to the last hurdle, my leg had hit it. All I could hear was the loud
sound of the metal bar hitting the

Discuss Athletics As A Pre-Industrial Popular Recreation...

  • 1. Discuss Athletics as a Pre-Industrial Popular Recreation... Athletics had relative importance in pre–industrial Britain mostly taking place at traditional fairs and festivals. For example a wake was seen as a great social occasion whereby mainly the lower class men would compete in events such as stick fighting, running, climbing a greasy pole and wrestling. These activities were seen as 'athletic' events and were an opportunity for the lower class men to show off their power and strength to the women. In addition women had the opportunity to take part in events such as smock races. Festivals and fairs such as these would take place on church holy days such as Easter and were seen as a chance for celebration and enjoyment. Prime examples of Festivals such as these include the Much Wenlock and Dover ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, athletics developed dramatically as a postindustrial rational recreation. The industrial revolution ended the traditional festivals and fairs as people moved to bigger cities in search of jobs. Instead, professional athletes became more popular especially in the cities and the sport modernized significantly. There were a number of purpose build specialist tracks by the end of the 1850s, which lead to an increase in the number of competitions that took place. These competitions would often have extremely large amounts of spectators of up to 20,000, helped by the improvements in transport such as the railways. Wagering of pre–industrial Britain was replaced with a more sophisticated type of gambling whereby people would bet on the winners of each race. Athletics as a rational recreation involved both the upper and lower classes. The upper and new middle classes were generally amateurs and would compete for the enjoyment and ability to 'show off' to friends whereas the working class would become professionals and ran to make money. However the ex– university gentleman did not want to compete against professionals and founded the Amateur Athletics Club in 1866 in order to exclude the working class professionals from competing against them. In 1880 the Amateur Athletics Association was formed which then recognized all areas of society, and therefore the exclusion clause was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Scheduling Classes, Athletic Events, and Extra Circular Activities We are all given 24 hours in a day and in an organized system each hour is given a category or name. An Athletic Director has many responsibilities in managing a department that has many activities occurring each day. These activities are physical education classes, practice schedules and locations, meeting special needs students, coordinating game schedules for each sport, and finding time to mentor those within the department. Each area presents its own challenge to synergistically work with the available facilities that are available. Furthermore, posting it on the web and being public, other administrators, teachers, parents, students, and athletic directors can view the schedule in real time (Hoch, 2005). The following link will take you to a two week example of a hypothetical school combining physical education classes and fall athletic sporting events with practices. Adaptive Physical Education for Special Needs Students Meeting all of the needs of students today is a challenging task, especially in physical education with students that have special needs and physical limitations. All students today have a right to participate in physical education classes and schools have a responsibility to ensure everyone is given the opportunity (Aiello, 2014). Adaptive Physical Education class offers a great opportunity for those with limitations to be in a safe environment and participate just like the rest of the students (C. Curtis, personal communication, May 6, 2014). Schools must be compliant with a certified adaptive physical education teacher leading a class as they are trained in conducting a class. All over the world, many people participate as players and spectators in a variety of sporting activities, creating opportunities for the marketing of a company's goods and services. An important part of the business of sports is sports marketing, which revolves around understanding consumer behavior and motivating target markets to purchase goods and services. Sports marketing at Clemson University has many different aspects ranging from sports and technology and sport law to sponsorship and sports economics. Not only do the "major leagues" participate in the marketing process but so do the smaller, "minor leagues" do as well. Every athletic organization, big or small, needs sports marketing for its survival. Sports marketing is needed because it helps the athletic organizations obtain profit, which is needed for survival. "For a promotion to be successful, it must be profitable. And to be profitable, it must enhance some, if not all, of the following goals: 1. Paid attendance, 2. Corporate tie–ins, 3. Sponsor value, and 4. Media coverage" (Helitzer 317). Promotions must increase the number of people at the event, or paid attendance, it also must enhance corporate tie–ins, which are signs or give–a–ways at the stadium. Sponsor value, or the value perceived by the sponsor must also be enhanced along with media coverage. Media coverage is enhanced by sending the local or national media sources bulletins about the events or by having press conferences. A strategy that a sports marketer must use is to stagger the promotional gimmicks throughout the event. If one staggers the promotion, then the audience is always aware of the event and looking out for the promotions. Another objective of sports marketing is creating sales. "The modern sports marketer is charged with one simple responsibility: to increase the sources of revenue" (Westerbeek 6). This includes obtaining more sponsors ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Collegiate athletics plays an essential part of a university and the community that are within the area of the university. Collegiate athletics bring an enthusiastic sports culture that is seen as a way to bring the university and community together as a family. An alarming trend has started to show over the last five years, where student attendance at college athletics has been declining. Fewer students are starting to not show up to home games and even more students are beginning to leave early. According to a study conducted by the Wall Street Journal, the average student attendance at college football games has dropped by 7.1 percent since 2009. The drop of student attendance is extremely unsettling for universities and most importantly college athletic departments for several reasons to name a few; less chances of developing new fans, lower amounts of concession stand purchases, and fewer merchandise sales. Current students are also relied upon as alumni to be future season ticket holders which is a key driver for collegiate athletics business models. Along with the business aspect of students attending athletic events, college administrators and coaches are alarmed in the decline of attendance because the noisy students help gives their team that home–field advantage that is such aspect that helps football and basketball teams ... Who Had More Influence On Shaping The Athletics / Sports Take Home Exam Essay Question Caitlynne Lucier 104278934 Who had more influence on shaping the athletics / sports past and present in the western world: the ANCIENT GREEKS or the ROMAN EMPIRE? Explain your choice in detail. In the Western World, the people who had more of an influence on the shaping of athletics and sports in the past and the present happened to be the Roman Empire. Although most to all of the sporting activities and views on athletics did originate from the Ancient Greeks, the Roman Empire had a monumental impact on not only the advancement of sport and athletics in their time but also to the sport and athletics we know today. The Roman Empire has some of the same qualities that the spectators, athletes, businessmen, and military soldiers of today show to support the evolution of sport and athletics itself. Some of these being that the Roman Empire showed identical mentality on everything sport, athletic, spectator, and more that have been translated to modern day sports and athletics. In addition to this, they did have the same outlook on women participating in sports and athletics that were very popular when sports came back into society in the 1900's. They did take women's involvement to the extreme but all in all very close. Following alongside these events was also the creation of the coliseum, which the people in this present day also find to be very important to sports and athletics, obviously with more of them ... Essay on Prayer At Public School Athletic Events Prayer at Public School Athletic Events –Can We Get a Moment of– –Silence Here?– If public schools are just that, public, then why is the issue of prayer in school such a prominent and controversial debate especially when most of the public wants prayer in school? The first amendment grants the right to free speech, yet everyday students are punished and ridiculed for their beliefs. Is this a fair system? Who wouldn't want any given soldier to make it back? "My heart's for it, but I think a moment of silence is just as effective." Said Olins Hooks, a high school football fan. That idea is totally possible. No one would feel as though a faith is being "pushed" on them, and at the same time everyone could choose if they would like to say a prayer or a wish in their mind, if they wished. Something such as this could be a possible solution for schools who choose to lead a "prayer" type situation. Creating a "universal– type prayer," is a difficult task, considering you have to possibly incorporate hundreds of religious sects. "Do you think that is it fair and constitutional for a student to take the microphone at a public high school football game and leave the crowd in a prayer or a moment of silence?" When posed with this question, Juan Acosta, who happens to be the son of a Catholic priest in San Diego, had this to say on the matter "I don't think it belongs there, maybe a moment of silence, but not a prayer. I think it's constitutional but not very considerate." So where do you draw the line for this? The use of a moment–of–silence or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Awful Possibility of Schools Cutting Athletic Programs... Schools everywhere give students opportunities to participate in sports by participating in athletic programs. With budget cuts, the administration is considering the possibility of eliminating all athletic programs. Admittedly, eliminating all athletic programs would save Lexington some money, but, on the other hand, it opens up opportunities for students who might not have a chance elsewhere. In fact, it has been proven that students who were involved in sports as teenagers are healthier as adults. Furthermore, school sports help kids bond and, moreover, show school spirit. The fact remains, athletic programs continuously show improvement in students more than weaknesses in the school. Athletic programs create opportunities for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nobody denies cutting athletic programs will help with budget problems, but if people, like the First Lady, are saying our country's health is important, then the administration should create an alternative solution. The children and students in the world today will define the country in the near future; therefore, eliminating those athletic programs will cause a devastating blow for the future of America. Moreover, if Lexington's administration believes in ruining the future of America, then they should vote to remove school athletic programs. In conclusion, without school athletic programs, Lexington could ruin students' health not only today, but also in the future. School athletic events have always been a place students can show school spirit and bond together. First, school athletic events are a place where students come together and cheer on their school not only to support the team, but also to show other schools that Lexington Local School is bonded together. An example of this was shown during a girls' soccer OCC tournament; many students came and cheered on the girls throughout the whole game. Not only did they cheer in the stands, but after the winning goal was scored during a shoot–out the entire student section ran down to the middle of the field to help Lexington's girls soccer celebrate. In that moment the students bonded together and showed the other school that Lexington, as a unit, won, displaying school spirit. Without athletic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Descriptive Essay About Running Running is a sport that is both physically and mentally demanding. The thought of running for many is dreadful, but when I think of running I think of how free it makes me feel. There are some people who become distance runners just to stay in shape or because they're not good at other sports. While I do enjoy the fact that running is a great way to stay in shape, I also see it as something I can put my emotions into and a chance to prove to myself how strong I am. My love admiration for running started when I was young, now every time I go for a run I am reminded of the little girl who dreamed of running. When I was in elementary school, my parents forced my brothers to join the Topeka High cross country team as a way to keep them busy. Cross country is a sport in which individuals from teams run a long distance race on natural terrain, the races are usually 3 miles. As soon as I went to their first race I became fascinated with the sport and team. The team seemed so inviting and acted just like a family who had been together forever, despite their being so many different types of people on it. At every race I would get to see hundreds of young people, who compared to me looked like giants, running their hearts out, with the common goal of crossing the finish line. To me there was something so astonishing about it and I knew that when I became a high schooler I would run on the Topeka High cross country team. • 41. Essay On Athletic Director Duties When comparing the list of athletic duties across the four schools, we found more similarities than differences. In our group we have two public schools which consist of Scoggins Middle School in McKinney, TX with 1,100 students and 7 sports teams, and Lakin High School in Lakin, Kansas with 400 students and 15 sports teams. We also have two private schools; Loyola Academy located in Wilmette, IL has 2,000 students with 24 sports teams, and Cary Academy (Middle and High School) located in Cary, NC has 800 students and 49 sports teams. A key similarity between the four schools is scheduling. One of the main athletic director duties is the scheduling of both home and away games, scheduling referees, and scheduling transportation for away games. This important duty for any athletic director can take up a large part of their time depending on how many teams they have per season. Another area where we saw similarities is in staff management. In our four schools, it is the role of the athletic director to hire the coaching staff, provide the necessary training, provide feedback and guidance, and to help mediate conflicts with parents and student athletes. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the differences we observed was in budget management. Although every school's athletic director is responsible for creating and managing a budget; where they get the funds to run the program differs. Fundraising in the private schools does not always fall on the athletic director. For instance, in one of the private schools listed, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is responsible for raising money to help fund the athletic program. In this case, the athletic director does not need to allocate any funds for fundraising events or marketing. First, they must be organized and communicate effectively so volunteers understand their job descriptions (Cramartie, 2013). They must also make security plans well in advance of major sporting events to ensure proper coverage. One way athletic directors can proactively enhance security and safety is promoting sportsmanship within their program. According to Hoch, athletic directors must "set the expectations and then communicate these parameters to everyone involved in your program – athletes, coaches, parents and fans" ("National", n.d., p. 2). Those are two common question that a lot of people ask to themselves. Most people believe that athletic trainers are just people who help trained the team in which they have to basically tell them how to work out and how to eat, but that's all wrong about athletic trainers. When creating marketing and game presentation plans, our goals always include generating more revenue and created the best experience possible for fans. While these achievements are necessary, at times the need to make more money for the department overshadows other purposes for marketing athletic events. All decisions college athletic departments make should be in an effort to uplift each student–athlete. I (and other sports marketers) do not get much direct contact with student–athletes, and the best way we are able to serve them is to get as many fans as possible to their athletic events to cheer them on during competition. Women have been defeating the odds of athleticism and masculinity that men realized, but wanted to hide and not appreciate their work. Through time men and women have made an effort to come together to bring attention to the downgrading of women in sports to earn acknowledgement and respect. With this, history has described men and women's sports as not equal but as history continues, women defeat the odds yet again. Women participating in athletic activities and sports date back millennia. Stories of women playing ball dates back to 800 BC in Homer's works of The Iliad. Until the 1870's, women never had the luxury of sports classified for women specifically. Multitasking was a high concern. People thought that each person had a set amount of energy and multitasking would deplete this energy rapidly that could cause harm to that individual. Women were highly encouraged to limit their activity so they would not fatigue their selves so quickly to avoid harm to their body. Doctors of this time believed this over–exertion could damage reproductive organs, decrease fertility rate, excessive stimulate emotions to the extent of a nervous breakdown, and even bizarre as decrease in a woman's sexual inhibition if she excessively indulged in sports (Cahn par. 4). It is evident that injury to the brain is life threatening in many ways. One specific injury that is becoming more prevalent in the United States is concussions. Particularly concussions are becoming very prevalent in young children, teens, and professional athletes. A study in July of 2016 shared that roughly 1.1 to 1.9 million concussions occur annually in the U.S. to children who are 18 and younger (Bryan, Rowhani–Rahbar, Comstock, & Rivar, 2016, p.1). Concussions can lead to traumatic brain injuries (TBI), which can lead to mortality (HEADS UP, 2016). Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shared that over 138 people die from TBI on a daily basis in the U.S. (HEADS UP, 2016). Public health is bringing awareness all over the U.S. to advocate prevention of concussions and make athletic events safer. Programs are being implemented to educate parents, coaches, and young athletes in hopes of concussion reduction. Concussions affect over 1.1 million American people yearly; this subject should not be taken lightly. What is a concussion? According to the CDC, "A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury–or TBI–caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth" (HEADS UP, 2016). • 87. The Sports Of An Athletic Games The hosting of an athletic games is a mammoth task that requires in–depth planning and huge amounts of labor. In modern times, and arguably more so in Ancient Greece, sports must be viewed as the intersection of many eclectic parts of society. While running an athletic event on this scale, we can break the planning chronologically into three main categories that will determine success: attracting an audience, the actual logistics of the game, and judging and the distribution of prizes. Each of these topics has many facets which must all be taken into consideration for our games to successfully attract people and sustain the popularity of the sanctuary and its God. Attracting large audiences is the crux of putting on a successful games. To do this, we must acknowledge one very crucial fact about sports in Ancient Greece – it is a result of, maybe even an extension of, religion. Therefore, if we are to host a successful event, we must first create a strong religious element to our sanctuary. For this I would suggest the creation of an oracle at our sanctuary. Oracles, such as the Pythia at Delphi, provide a steady influx of people while also increasing the popularity of the God with each prophecy (Jones). This will feed directly into the popularity of our event. Religious fervor could be further augmented by the creation of a large monument of some kind. Just like the gold and ivory statue of Zeus at Olympia which drew in large crowds, our idol would serve as an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 112. Stereotypes Of Women In Sports Essay Every week, a new issue of Sports Illustrated magazine is distributed throughout the world, showing a provocative image of a woman athlete, on the front cover or inside, barely clothed, belittling a women's athletic ability in their professional sport. In different aspects of the world today women are underrepresented such as political positions, STEM and most importantly sports. Even though Title IX has increased females participation in sports there is still a lack of support of women's athletic events. The main focus of this review is to examine how women athletes are portrayed in the media compared to men athletes. People might not realize that the most important type of sports media is the coverage of athletic events on television. Athletic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many athletes are stereotyped by gender because the commentators are the ones speaking to the public while the public get familiarized to these stereotypes. Many commentators comment very stereotypical comments but to the public it is not very shocking due to the multitude of times it has occurred which they have grown familiar to. One of such was by a commentator , Colin Murray said during the Olympics that "the ultimate athlete would have 'the stamina of Mo [Farah], the speed of [Usain] Bolt, the leap of [Greg] Rutherford and the bottom of Jess Ennis'" (Stanistreet). To a professional female athlete this was a very gender stereotyped comment due to the fact that only one of the four athletes mentioned was a woman and that the provocative part of the athlete, the butt, was given to a female athlete as the ultimate athlete. Through a study on the NCAA National Championship Games for men and women basketball, they have discovered that the commentators constantly mark the women's game repeating phrases like, " '...some of the best women's college basketball teams..', '...is a legend in women's basketball...', and '...this NCAA women's semifinal is brought to you by ... '" (Messner and Duncan). The word women was periodically brought up during the female championships, marking the gender stereotype, but while the male championships ... Prayer at Public School Athletic Events Prayer at Public School Athletic Events –Can We Get a Moment of– –Silence Here?– If public schools are just that, public, then why is the issue of prayer in school such a prominent and controversial debate especially when most of the public wants prayer in school? The first amendment grants the right to free speech, yet everyday students are punished and ridiculed for their beliefs. Is this a fair system? Every person has his or her own rituals and for many students prayer is one of them. Agreeing with this matter is Andy Johnson, a current high school football player who says, that "They [the students] should be able to say what they want. Freedom of speech. Rehnquist and Justice Antonin Scalia seem to be "for" the students free–speech rights while Justices David H. Souter and Ruth Bader Ginshurg "repeatedly portrayed the policy as a breach in the constitutionally required separation of church and state." An ABC News poll said that two–thirds of Americans think that students should be allowed to lead such prayers (In school–sponsored sporting events.) Doesn't that say something? One surprising fact that is that presidential candidates are both FOR prayer in school. Republican George W. Bush is said to "support student–led prayer." The 94 percent of voters in Texas' Republican primary approved a "non binding resolution backing student–initiated prayer at school sporting events." That's sure to keep Bush's opinion going in one direction. And in a written statement, Democrat Al Gore said that "allowing students to engage in voluntary individual or group prayer is not only permissible but worthy of protection." All in all the final votes are in the hands of Justices Anthony M. Kennedy and Sandra Day O'Connor. There's also another issue of pray at football games questioning if football games are extracurricular or part of the school system. It appears that prayer in public schools is heading in one direction – to the top. More and more people are participating and it feeds the decisions of the Supreme Court. I learned this lesson early in my experience working as a graduate assistant with the softball team at Lindenwood University – Belleville. While athletic trainers are vital components to an athletic program's success and safety, athletic trainers must frequently meet the demands of the teams and coaching staffs they work with. I was often one of the first to find out if plans for an event changed; therefore I had adequate time to adjust my schedule for the day and prepare for the event.
