which an abortion can be performed, depending on how far along into the process the mother is.
There tends to be debate on the subject as some object to the purpose of removing a fetus from a
woman. Different viewpoints are decided based on which ethical theory one decides to believe. For
some, it can be a utilitarian approach – while others can take a Kantian stance. These two viewpoints
have both pros and cons, and must all be analyzed in order to truly understand the debate over
abortion.
When pregnant, women have three options to choose from; the mother can either keep the baby and
support it through childhood, keep the baby but give it up for adoption, or abort the child. If the
mother decides abortion, there are two different ways she could go about the process. If in the first
trimester, the fetus can typically be removed with medications such as pills. The second trimester
has higher risk, in which the fetus would have to be removed surgically (WebMD).
A pill can be used in the first ten weeks of pregnancy. There are two pills that end up being taken:
mifepristone and misoprostol. The mifepristone stops the fetus from growing, as the hormone
progesterone is being blocked. Misoprostol is taken about 6–48 hours later. This process physically

The controversy of abortion has been going on for what seems like millions of years. It all began at
the start of the Roe v. Wade court decision. According to many, a woman is guaranteed her right to
an abortion by her constitutional right. The eighth amendment forbids cruel and unusual
