Telecommunications Industry Newsletter
November 18, 2019
The Microsoft Worldwide Telecommunications Industry team is pleased to share
with you the November 2019 Telecommunications Industry Newsletter, available to
both internal and external audiences. We encourage you to share it with your
colleagues and distribute it to your customers and partners as appropriate. As
always, we welcome your input, feedback, and suggestions!
Transforming to a digital business is a key theme across global communications
service providers and many industry leaders are pursuing a new paradigm by
leveraging agile new technologies, systems, and services to enable this
transformation. This newsletter showcases how the telecommunications industry
leverages Microsoft and partner technologies like cloud, artificial intelligence, big
data, virtual network functions, and blockchain to accelerate the transformation to
digital services.
November has been a busy month with not one but
two big events which provided many telecom industry
activities and announcements. This month includes
coverage of Microsoft Ignite and the TM Forum
Digital Transformation Asia. At Ignite, attendees
learn innovative ways to build solutions and migrate and manage their
infrastructure. Over 25,000 individuals focused on software development, security,
architecture, and IT explore new hands-on experiences that innovate in areas such
as security, cloud, and hybrid infrastructure and development.
Microsoft also participated in TM Forum Digital
Transformation Asia, an event focused on how industry
leaders are transforming their operating environment to be
ready for an agile, fast-paced future. As TM Forum’s flagship
conference for Asia, the event brings industry thought leaders
and practitioners together to collaborate and share for three intensive days.

Enabling and securing ubiquitous compute from intelligent cloud to
intelligent edge
Enterprises are embracing the cloud to run their
mission-critical workloads. The number of connected
devices on and off-premises, and the data they
generate continue to increase requiring new
enterprise network edge architectures. We call this
the intelligent edge – compute closer to the data
sources and users to reduce latency. The intelligent
cloud, with its massive compute power, storage and
variety of services works in concert with the intelligent edge using similar programming
models to enable innovative scenarios and ubiquitous compute. Networking is the crucial
enabler integrating the intelligent cloud with the intelligent edge.
The Azure Networking mission is to provide the most secure, reliable, and performant
network for your workloads, delivered and managed from the intelligent cloud to the
intelligent edge. We continue to innovate to help your services connect and extend to the
cloud and the edge, be protected, delivered with optimal performance and provide
insightful monitoring.
The most exciting announcement for the telecom industry was related to Multi-access
Edge Computing (MEC), which offers application developers cloud-computing capabilities
at the customer premises. This environment is characterized by very low latency and high
bandwidth as well as real-time access to radio networks such as Private LTE and 5G. By
integrating MEC capabilities with Azure, we will be offering a continuum of compute and
network capabilities from the intelligent cloud to the edge. New critical and immersive
scenarios such as smart factory and mixed reality require reliable low-latency and high
bandwidth connectivity combined with local compute.

Microsoft Teams integrates multiple communication tools, strengthens
relationships
The Systems Division of leading ICT company NTT Communications worked with user
organizations to migrate the company's communication platform, comprising several
tools, to Microsoft Teams. Unifying multiple means of communication into a single user
interface improved usability and dramatically increased the speed, volume, and detail of
communication. As a result, personal connections grew stronger, and it became easier to
create an autonomous organization. Although these advancements were expected to
significantly contribute to work-style reforms, an email-focused communication culture
was an obstacle to Teams, penetrating the entire company. Therefore, NTT’s Third Sales
Division—which manages sales to the domestic financial industry and public entities—and
Systems Division worked with Microsoft from the early phases of the introduction to set
an example for other user organizations. As a result, Teams became a company-wide
communication platform and helped reform culture and work styles.

  • 1. Telecommunications Industry Newsletter November 18, 2019 The Microsoft Worldwide Telecommunications Industry team is pleased to share with you the November 2019 Telecommunications Industry Newsletter, available to both internal and external audiences. We encourage you to share it with your colleagues and distribute it to your customers and partners as appropriate. As always, we welcome your input, feedback, and suggestions! Transforming to a digital business is a key theme across global communications service providers and many industry leaders are pursuing a new paradigm by leveraging agile new technologies, systems, and services to enable this transformation. This newsletter showcases how the telecommunications industry leverages Microsoft and partner technologies like cloud, artificial intelligence, big data, virtual network functions, and blockchain to accelerate the transformation to digital services. November has been a busy month with not one but two big events which provided many telecom industry activities and announcements. This month includes coverage of Microsoft Ignite and the TM Forum Digital Transformation Asia. At Ignite, attendees learn innovative ways to build solutions and migrate and manage their infrastructure. Over 25,000 individuals focused on software development, security, architecture, and IT explore new hands-on experiences that innovate in areas such as security, cloud, and hybrid infrastructure and development. Microsoft also participated in TM Forum Digital Transformation Asia, an event focused on how industry leaders are transforming their operating environment to be ready for an agile, fast-paced future. As TM Forum’s flagship conference for Asia, the event brings industry thought leaders and practitioners together to collaborate and share for three intensive days.
  • 2. MICROSOFT CUSTOMERS PARTNERS EVENTS Microsoft in the News Telecom industry news featuring Microsoft business, products, services, and hardware partners. Enabling and securing ubiquitous compute from intelligent cloud to intelligent edge Enterprises are embracing the cloud to run their mission-critical workloads. The number of connected devices on and off-premises, and the data they generate continue to increase requiring new enterprise network edge architectures. We call this the intelligent edge – compute closer to the data sources and users to reduce latency. The intelligent cloud, with its massive compute power, storage and variety of services works in concert with the intelligent edge using similar programming models to enable innovative scenarios and ubiquitous compute. Networking is the crucial enabler integrating the intelligent cloud with the intelligent edge. The Azure Networking mission is to provide the most secure, reliable, and performant network for your workloads, delivered and managed from the intelligent cloud to the intelligent edge. We continue to innovate to help your services connect and extend to the cloud and the edge, be protected, delivered with optimal performance and provide insightful monitoring. The most exciting announcement for the telecom industry was related to Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC), which offers application developers cloud-computing capabilities at the customer premises. This environment is characterized by very low latency and high bandwidth as well as real-time access to radio networks such as Private LTE and 5G. By integrating MEC capabilities with Azure, we will be offering a continuum of compute and network capabilities from the intelligent cloud to the edge. New critical and immersive scenarios such as smart factory and mixed reality require reliable low-latency and high bandwidth connectivity combined with local compute.
