3. Mission
To enable people in higher education,
further education and skills in the UK
to perform at the forefront of
international practice by exploiting
fully the possibilities of modern digital
empowerment, content and
connectivity
Our vision & mission

Vision
To make the UK the most
digitally advanced
education and research
nation in the world
4. Jisc – main functions to support research process
4
»Support universities core business and help make
research process more productive e.g. through:
› Developing shared services/infrastructure
› Providing a channel for universities requirements with
funders, publishers, vendors
› Supporting development and implementation of key
standards

» Aim
– Move from pilot to test service
– Make research data more discoverable
» Objectives
– Evaluate the ANDS model and also Comprehensive Knowledge
Archive Network (CKAN) model
– Come up with a set of criteria for a UK research data discovery
service
» Issue
– Need for a mechanism to aggregate and link research data
metadata from various archives and repositories within the UK
Currently in phase 2 - ends September 2016
6. UK research data discovery service
» Phase 1
– DCC pilot to evaluate the Research DataAustralia developed by ANDS
– Contributions from UK data archive,Archaeology data centre and NERC
data centres
» Phase 2
– Jisc-led with support from DCC and UKDA
– 9 HEIs and 6 DataCentres receiving funding to be pilots in the project
– Continue the metadata standards work
– Move the pilot to a suitable instantiation for a future service
– 3 advisory groups: User, Researcher,Technical&Metadata
– http://rdds.jiscinvolve.org/ and http://bit.ly/1Iseikh

» Aim & Objectives
– Assess use and demand
– Develop a proof-of-concept tool (using IRUS)
– Contribute to and draw on wider international
work
– Make recommendations for progression to service
» Demand
– Interest in the spread of academic work
– Interest in the effectiveness of data management
systems and processes

Editor's Notes
Build on the stakeholder engagement
Clearly articulate and address use cases
£30k pounds – to make their data available and feed it to this discovery service; also used to refine their metadata so that it can be harvested: some work institutions need to do to improve their metadata
Interest from other institutions HEI and Datacentres and wanted to be kept in the loop; they are not getting funding, but they are observing
the three advisory groups (User, Researcher, Technical & Metadata) are helping develop use cases, confirm requirements and will evaluate the service as it’s developed. The groups include the funded participants and other interested parties
Full aims:
Assess potential use of and demand for approaches to research data metrics.
Develop a proof-of-concept tool (using the IRUS platform) to offer download metrics for datasets in institutional and subject area repositories.
Contribute to and draw on wider international work on research data metrics, including work on recognised international standards.
To make recommendations for progression to service and further development research on the most likely approaches to gain user interest and traction
