significant dates in Soka
Gakkai?
These commemorative dates help us deepen our
understanding of the history and spirit of the oneness of
mentor and disciple. Each Soka Gakkai date we celebrate is
directly tied to the substantial efforts of the Soka Gakkai's
three eternal mentors-Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda
and Daisaku Ikeda.

3. November 18, 1930 – The Soka Gakkai
Founding Day.
The Soka Gakkai, initially called Soka Kyoiku Gakkai (Value-
Creating Education Society), was founded by Tsunesaburo
Makiguchi and his disciple Josei Toda with the aim of reforming
Japan’s education system. On this day, the first volume of Soka
Kyoikugaku Taikei (The System Of Value Creating Education),
which explains Makiguchi’s educational theory, was published.
The publication date of this groundbreaking book is observed as
SOKA GAKKAI FOUNDING DAY.
4. November 18, 1944 – This day is
also the death anniversary of our
first president Tsunesaburo
Makiguchi. He died in prison. He
was imprisoned during World War
II for defying the Japanese
government’s order to embrace the
Shinto Talisman and defending the
correct teaching Of Nichiren
Daishonin.
5. November 18, 2013 is also
officially recognized as the
inaugural day of the Hall Of The
Great Vow for Kosen - Rufu or
Daiseido, where the Soka Gakkai
Joju Gohonzon is enshrined. This
year, we are celebrating the 10th
Anniversary Of Daiseido.
6. DETERMINATION
November 18 has come to symbolize a day when each individual strengthens
their own determination and sense of responsibility to contribute to the welfare
of society and world peace in the spirit of the three founding presidents of the
Soka Gakkai.
