A very prominent example of this aspect of war was shown near the beginning of the book as Brigadier General Buford arrived in Gettysburg early,
and had to decide whether or not to hold the ground and hope for reinforcements to avoid getting slaughtered or leave it and risk defeat for the
whole army. Buford lamented to himself that "If we made a stand here how long do you think we could hold? Long enough for John Reynolds to
get here with the Infantry? How long would that take? Will Reynolds hurry?...But how long can you hold against Lee's whole army? If it is the
whole Army. These are two very good for brigades; you built them yourself. Suppose you sacrifice them and Reynolds is late? For Reynolds will
be late. They're always late" (Shaara, 40) This quote shows how Burford was forced to make a decision, knowing that Reynolds may be late, but also
that they will need the high ground in the upcoming battle. This decision also required Buford to question whether or not it was worth it to sacrifice

The Killer Angels is an historical novel about the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War. The book captures the human nature of many historical
figures over three fateful days in rural Pennsylvania in 1863. North and South, Yankee and Confederate; The Killer Angels provides a glimpse into the
hearts and souls of some of the men who fought in this infamous battle and their own reasons for being in a fight to the death against their fellow
countrymen.
The Civil War was a very significant time in American history. The Civil War was fought between theConfederate States of America and the United
States of America. Most people say the Civil War was a war that was fought to end slavery, which it was for most of the population. The Civil War
was fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union. The South wanted slaves to help run there farming plantations. Southern slave
owners did not want their way of life threatened or changed, life had been the same for them for generations. Those Americans from the North were
considered more progressive and had more influence from other cultures which helped open their eyes to the horrors of slavery. But for many of the
men, going to war was a chance to escape boredom and some came because it was the right thing to do (p. 28).
After the four year war the death toll was over 600,000 Union and Southern men. The war fought mostly in the south and left it in ruins. The Killer

Theme Of Friendship In The Killer Angels
The Killer Angels displays many of the important themes that occurred during the Battle of Gettysburg, some of which including bravery,
leadership, and, most of all, friendship. This theme of friendship is represented in many of the characters of this book, and some of these
friendships were divided by ranks and, in the case of Armistead and Hancock, by countries. But even with the fighting, true friendship is able to

You could compare their friendship to that of comrades in school who would share information with each other. However, these two argued multiple
times in the book, which affected not only their lives in the book but the lives of many soldiers. They argued because of their many different view:
Longstreet wanted to take a defensive approach while Lee wanted to go on the offensive and Longstreet wanted to court–martial Stuart while Lee did
not want to (pg. 189; "Would you do it? Court–martial Stuart? Yes, I would. Seriously? Or are you just talking? Longstreet though a moment. Lee
wouldn't. Lee won't."). While these differing views did help each other to come to agreements, their arguments, especially the one on the third day
about Lee's strategy, do not really get anywhere because of Lee's stubbornness (pg. 286; " 'General,' Longstreet said slowly, 'it is my considered
opinion that a frontal assault here would be a disaster.' Lee turned, frowned, the dark eyes flared for a moment.' "). Even if they argued a lot, that did
not ruin their friendship. Longstreet was not like many of the soldiers who looked at Lee like God on earth; he saw him as the old man that he really

During one such moment, Chamberlain is reminded of a Shakespearean speech: "What a piece of work man is...in action how like an angel!" (page
126). Upon hearing this, Chamberlain's father commented, "Well, boy, if he's an angel, he's sure a murderin' angel." (page 126). From this interaction,
Chamberlain came up with "Man: the Killer Angels", a thought he often revisited over the course of the Battle of Gettysburg, and from which the book
acquires its title. Chamberlain acted with the intention of getting something positive out of the war. He never treated the Confederates as though they

he used slang and dropped "g's" for the Confederate soldiers and used proper grammar and British terminology for the Englishman, Freemantle. I was

The novel Killer Angels by Michael Shaara portrays the battle of Gettysburg in all of its glory from the perspective of both the Union and the
Confederate soldiers. He told the story of the battle day by day, switching from General to General, and showing an immense amount of insight and
research to how things most likely occurred during the heat of battle in July of 1863. Not only did Shaara display various viewpoints of the battle, he
did it in a convincing style.
Killer Angels was written not as a work of non–fiction but rather as a historical fiction, in which literary license and research was used to put the

For example, on the Confederate side, he shows how an ailing and weary Robert E. Lee has pinned his hopes to end the war on the idea of attacking
and destroying the Union army on it's own ground. Shaara depicted Lee's top general, James Longstreet, as being against the invasion because he
believed the South's military success had come from a defensive style of warfare. This idea that Longstreet was apprehensive about the attack is an

On day 2 (July 2nd) in Gettysburg Ewell and Early give Lee the idea to army strike the

Pulitzer Prize–winning author Michael Shaara, the author of The Killer Angels, was born on June 23, 1928 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was an
author of science fiction, sports fiction, and historical fiction. Although writing was his passion, Shaara was very athletically successful in high
school, winning more awards than any other student in the history of the school for sports such as basketball, track and baseball. He acquired a
skill in boxing, and of the 18 matches Shaara fought as a young man, he won 17. The one loss would serve as the basis for a later short story,
"Come to My Party." After high school, he attended Rutgers University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1951. He later did some
graduate work at Columbia University and the University of Vermont. It was during his college days that he realized his one goal was to become a
writer, and he began to write short stories and sell them to magazines such as Playboy, Redbook, Cosmopolitan, The Saturday Evening Post, and
many others. Prior to the Korean War, Shaara served as a paratrooper and was a sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division, and he later served as a
merchant seaman and a police officer. After working these various jobs, Shaara began to focus more on subjects related to writing, and later taught

soldiers. A statue of General Warren can also be seen near the round tops. Moving cars and tire marks can be found on the battleground. During
Pickett's charge, you can see lights from what appears to be a school field in the background. Even some footage in the film is used twice. Despite the

He reminiscences about a discussion he had with a southern professor. This is evident that he himself if divided. He has the belief that black deserve
to be free. Chamberlain is troubled by the sense of revulsion that he feels at the sight of a black man. "[A]wake all night in front of Fredericksburg.
We attacked in the afternoon, just at dusk, and the stone wall was aflame from one end to the other, too much smoke, couldn't see, the attack failed,

On July 2 his troops had attacked the Union troops on Little Round Top. during this time Hood had been wounded in the arm by a previous battle.
Although, by the end of the previous battle his arm had been basically hanging off his shoulder but they never amputated it and it was left there for
the rest of his life. When a patient gets a limb amputated it must be because there is a serious injury or infection. However, when a patient gets a
limb amputated the doctors would reuse bandages and other materials from other patients without being cleaned. Seeing as there were such a
shortage of doctors many of them were not able to easy surgical repairs and many that could have been fixed became infected. Amputations were
done by cutting of a limb quickly so the patient will not die of shock or pain. They would cut the saw in a circular motion so the process can be quick.

In the beginning of the book Lee and Longstreet tried to contact Stuart, however their attempts went unanswered. When Stuart finally made an
appearance, he found that he was needed earlier in the battle and that his colleagues were perturbed. An irritated Marshall stated, "He was

big part of the entire battle was loyalty. In many parts of the book loyalty is shown from the generals and commanders. For example even though
Longstreet did not agree with the decisions of Lee he still stayed loyal to his commander and they army by going in with the plan. Shaara captured

This is most evident in the third day, when Shaara alternates between Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain of the Union and James Longstreet of the
Confederacy with one section focusing on Lewis Armistead. Chamberlain and Longstreet are the two major opposing officers, and we see the
events from both perspectives. During Pickett's charge from Longstreet's view, it is conceivable to imagine that the Union forces are easily routing
the charging Confederates. However, when the book looks at Chamberlain's side, we see that the Union forces are being hit fairly hard by
Confederate artillery. By showing us the different characters' viewpoints, Shaara also shows us their personal feelings. For example, we learn of the
deep friendship between Armistead and the Union Major General Winfield Scott Hancock. This changes the reader's view of Armistead's role in
Pickett's charge. There is now a poignant touch of pathos in seeing Armistead falter with emotion and die at the top of the hill with apologies to
Hancock. When the readers can look at the characters of history as human, it becomes easier to grasp not only what they have done, but also why they
have done so. This is invaluable to understanding history.

Summer Reading The book I chose to read over the summer was the book The Killer Angels, by Michael Shaara. The Killer Angels tells the story of
the Battle of Gettysburg. On July 1, 1863, the Confederate army, and the Union army, fought the largest battle of the American Civil War. When the
battle ended, fifty one thousand men were KIA (Killed In Action), wounded, or MIA (Missing in Action). All the characters in this book are based on
real figures that fought in this great battle. The characters include General Robert Lee, commander of the Confederate army; General James Longstreet,
Lee's second in command; and Union Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, who fought in one of the most famous parts of the Battle of Gettysburg, the fighting
on Little Round Top. The story begins on June 29, 1863 with a spy going to Longstreet and informing him that he had seen theUnion army moving
nearby. This information surprises Longstreet, because General Stuart is supposed to be following the Union army with his cavalry. Longstreet thinks
the Confederate army must quickly move north to intercept the Union. The Confederates swing southeast, through the mountains, and toward a town

Chamberlain is the colonel of the Twentieth Maine infantry regiment. Throughout the story Chamberlain shows affection to the African American race
which supports he is fighting for an ideal. Not only does he shows warmth to African Americans, but also to the Union Army which further shows his

Lee's are significant characters in the story's narration. The two are Confederacy soldiers, trusted each other, and they are worried with the safety
of others. They hold different maneuvers about the war. Lee had very good strategic skills though his conventional policies are often conflict with

We all think that the civil war was just about southern secession, but in reality, there were various reason and beliefs that motivated these soldiers to
fight for their country. Northerners simply wanted to restore the Union whereas the Confederates were trying to gain independence from the Union.
This was one of the main reasons why Southern soldiers were more passionate about the war as they were fighting for their way of life, while
Northerners simply wanted to unite a split nation. Aside from saving the Union, Northerners didn't understand the importance of slavery and believed

Those details keep the reader in the game, so to speak. Another one of the author's man ideas is using the leaders in separate points of view. In
every chapter there was a different leader and his point of view. This showed how everyone felt about each battle or occurrence. The author did not
attempt to sway the reader to one army or the other. He let the reader choose whose side he or she was on. Michael Shaara does not ever describe
army or the other as the "bad guys" or the "good guys." The strategies and tactics used during this war were described in detail. The more important
thing described, however, is not the actual strategy, but who made these strategies and what the other leaders thought of them. When General Lee
decided to attack the enemy head on instead of going around them, not everyone agreed with the plan. Longstreet, for one, thought that they should
have gone around the enemy and hit them from the back. These conflicts were great to see because it showed that everything was not going in perfect
unison. It showed that these strategies we not always etched in stone. These plans had the potential to be changed many times. No successful strategy

The main generals for the South were Lee and Longstreet. For the North there was Buford and Chamberlain. These men truly believed in what they
were fighting for. Chamberlain's sight on Little Round Top was very moving and courageous. I realized all the things the men had to give up and
