1. ‘LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK,
WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE
PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL
PRODUCT?’
Rosie Childs
2. TITLES
I have learnt the difference between
titles that work and titling that don’t!
Above are the titles taken from our
preliminary task and as you can see,
they are extremely un-dramatic and
nearly translucent. Although I believe
the font does depict the horror genre,
for me I can see that we have really
developed our skills with the new title
seen here. They appear much more
professional and in keeping with the
horror genre.
Also, rather than just having one title
in the preliminary sequence we now
have over six (director, editor etc)
which helps to show the progression
that we have made.
3. CAMERA KNOWLEDGE
During the preliminary task, we had basic
camera knowledge and often just placed
the camera onto a tripod and clicked
record.
By the time it came to filming for Pastures
New, we had gathered a lot more
knowledge in regards to the SLR cameras
that we were using. We had since learnt
how to focus the lens both manually and
automatically and how to change the
colour settings of the camera. Overall I do
feel a lot more confident now then I did
previously about using an SLR camera.
4. PRESENTATION
Since completing the
preliminary task, my overall
presentation of my blog has
improved as I have developed
new skills through using new
technologies such as Prezi and
Slideshare. This creates a much
more interactive and visual
viewing experience, rather than
just paragraphs of continues
writing.
5. MUSIC
Along with using new technologies such as YouTube and learning about
copyright in relation to music downloads, I have broadened my knowledge
of music genres and how different genres of music can create desired
effects such as tension and suspense.
Furthermore, I have learnt about contrapuntal sound and how it can be
used to foreshadow events in a sequence. Before hand, I tended to just edit
music in at points that it seemed to ‘fit in’. Now I am much more aware of
how influential music can be in portraying a character’s emotions or
transforming the feel of a scene.
6. EDITING
Although premiere was used to edit our
preliminary sequence, at that point we
mainly focused on the continuity of the
clips rather than the actual editing of the
footage. Throughout the learning process I
have discovered how to change the
resolution, brightness, contrast and clarity
of a clip and also how to use After Effects
to create titles.
In terms of continuity, we
are now much more
aware of achieving a un-
fragmented sequence.
Whereas when I re-watch
the preliminary task it is
extremely obvious that
the shots are separated
as they do not flow
continuously into each
7. PLANNING
When filming Pastures New
it was important to ensure
that we had permission to
film in certain areas
(location recce) and also
that we had permission
from the actors parents
and the people featured in
the ‘year book scene’.
Furthermore we had to be
careful when filming
around the school due to
sensitive information that
we could potentially come
across. Whereas in the
preliminary task, we did
not follow any of these
8. MISE-EN-SCENE (COSTUMES)
In terms of mise-en-scene, we have
become a lot more aware of how
different backgrounds, lighting and
clothing can completely re-define a
scene. In the preliminary task,
although costumes were worn, they
were very poor and did not helped to
portray the personality, lifestyle and
job description of the character. For
example – the costume at the bottom
is supposed to be a police
investigator’s, instead it is a school
blazer with a school emblem on.
9. AUDIENCE AWARENESS
When filming and editing Pastures
New we were constantly aware of our
target audience as they were a
circuital component to remember in
the production process, often
influencing over decisions as we went.
Whereas in the preliminary task we
failed to acknowledge our target
audience throughout the entire
process, instead we focused on
themes such as shot types and
continuity. During the first task as
well, it could be said that we were
oblivious to the idea that an audience
even existed and also their
importance media.
10. COMMUNICATION, TIME
MANAGEMENT AND
COMMUNICATION
In comparison to our preliminary task I
think we definitely had to consider how we
managed our time a lot more. This was
mainly due to the fact that this piece would
be contributing greatly to our final
coursework grade yet also, the thought
process behind the research, planning,
construction and evaluation was a lot more
time consuming than the previous task.
We often communicated using a group
chat. The chat enabled us to confirm plans,
have discussions as a group and to
genuinely keep up to date with one
another. Whilst filming the preliminary
task, we would only exchange ideas whilst
11. UNDERSTANDING REQUIREMENTS
In comparison to the preliminary, the requirements for this task were
a lot more demanding. From the first few lessons I understood that
this was going to be a lot more challenging than the preliminary task,
this was mainly due to:
- More research and planning had to be carried out in order to
understand the horror genre, the conventions, representations and
how to use different technologies which was time consuming but also
challenging to learn and to then apply to our own sequence.
- Having a tick sheet/progress sheet in this practical was another
differing factor in comparison to the preliminary task. Although this
was extremely helpful in regards to time management, there were
many requirements to fulfil.
