5. Message
from
His Excellency Dr Ken Michael, AC
Governor of Western Australia
Launch of the Magnifying Microscope Project
Monday, 22 March 2010
The Magnifying Microscope Project is a wonderful initiative that will allow school
children to explore and discover the wonders of science and the natural world.
I congratulate all those involved in this exciting project initiated by the Rotary Club of
Freshwater Bay; particularly its President, Diane Collins, who pursued the idea after
it was raised by WA Chief Scientist, Professor Lyn Beazley.
Australia to have access to a magnifying microscope because our State is vast and
still has so much to be discovered. I agree wholeheartedly. Our school children of
today are our scientists of tomorrow.
I am aware that the members of Freshwater Bay Rotary embraced this project
enthusiastically. Three of the schools participating in the project are Mt Claremont,
North Cottesloe and Claremont Primary School. As well, the Water Corporation
kindly supported the project by producing an accompanying manual and providing
microscopes for Lesmurdie Primary School.
The most powerful social tool we can offer our young people is learning through
innovative and inspiring educational opportunities. This project is one of those
opportunities and I am certain there are going to be many inspiring moments for
those students who will be using these microscopes.
6. 2
As adults and parents, we know that education is the best investment we can make
in our children. As an old Chinese proverb says:
If you are planning for a year, sow rice; if you are planning
for a decade, plant trees, if you are planning for a lifetime,
Congratulations, again, to everybody involved in this wonderful project, which will
provide children with the exciting opportunity to explore science and nature first
hand.
