As you think of your next interview, you probably break out into cold sweat at the
prospect of facing a tough interviewer. What does it take to crack an interview?
Negotiate your salary? Dress appropriately? Give the right information in you cover
letter?
Making the right impression or having the skill to write a remarkable cover letter is
not as difficult as it sounds. Starting this week, our weekly column ‘6 handy tips to ace an interview’ will get you all the
tricks and tips to help you land your dream job.
In the first of the series, Ravi S Singh, Founder, Insiders tells Jobbuzz readers what it takes to get your foot in the door.
“You never get a second chance to make a First Impression” as a search consultant I can definitely vouch for this famous
cliché. The first interview, whether it’s a personal interview, telephonic or a video interview, the following things have to be
kept in mind:
• Know your CV well: The interviewer knows a bit about you even before meeting you, through your CV. Hence you should
be thorough about what you have written in your CV and have answers to justify any random questions from your CV
• Company Study: Every interviewer wants to know if you have a thorough understanding of the company. The least you
can do before you appear for the first round is to go through the company webpage and be aware of the latest happenings in
the company and industry.

• Physical appearance: Yes it matters a lot, it’s very rare that an interviewer will question you about this but it’s something
which is an unsaid rule. And of course it’s not only about what you wear, it’s also about your attitude.
• Question the Question: Be honest if you don’t understand something, question it, the interviewer will appreciate that
instead of you making assumptions
• Parting Words: Most of the interviews finish with “do you have any questions?” – you should be prepared with a couple of
questions in your mind but ask only if u feel it’s relevant and not just for the sake of asking; what is most important is to set
the right tone before you leave.
• Know your interviewer: In the age of social media most people have an online profile so if you know interviewer’s name
just do a little bit of online research and try and learn a bit about his/ her professional experience. The interviewer doesn’t
expect you to know about him but it will definitely add to your confidence.
