'Phonetics' is the study of pronunciation. Phonetics is the study of vocal sounds. Communication between the individuals is the basis for civilized growth of the community and speech dominates human communication. Phonetics
The tongue, the lips, the vocal cords, the palate (the roof of the mouth, the windpipe and the teeth are the main organs of speech Organs of Speech
A vowel is a voiced sound in forming which the issues in a continuous stream through the pharynx and the mouth, there being no obstruction and no narrowing such as would cause audible friction. Vowels
There are totally 20 vowels in the English language, of these 12 are pure vowels and 8 are Diphthongs. Vowels can be classified into two types 1. short vowels - /æ/ /ɒ/ /ʌ/ /ʊ/ /e/ /ɪ/ /ə/ 2. long vowels - /i:/ /u:/ /ɔ:/ /ɑ:/ /ɜ:/ How many vowels are there in English lanuage?
Vowels in whose production the point of articulation does not change are called pure vowels. Pure Vowels
Vowels in whose production the point of articulation glides from one point to another are called diphthongs. Diphthongs can be classify into three types : /i/ ending diphthongs - /eɪ/ / aɪ/ /ɔɪ/ /u/ ending diphthongs - /əʊ/ /aʊ/ /ə/ ending diphthongs - /ɪə/ /eə/ /ʊə/ Diphthongs
The non-vowel sounds in whose production there is an audible friction or modification at some place in the mouth due to obstruction are called consonants. There are 24 consonants in English language which includes the gliding consonants or semi – vowels /w/ and /j/ Consonants
Consonants are classified into six types: Plosive - /p/ /b/ /t / /d/ / k/ /g/ /tʃ/ /dʒ/ Fricative - /f/ /v/ / θ / / ð/ /s/ /z/ /ʃ/ /ʒ/ /h/ Nasal - /m/ /n/ /ŋ/ Lateral - /l/ Affricative(semi-vowels) - /j/ /w/ Trill - /r/ Consonants
The consonants in whose production the air is pushed out of the lungs with considerable force are called strong consonants. /f/ /θ/ /s/ /ʃ/ /p/ /t/ /k/ /tʃ/ Strong Consonants
The consonants in whose production the air is pushed out by the lungs with little force are called weak consonants. /v/ /z/ /b/ /d/ /g/ /ð/ /ʒ/ /dʒ/ Weak Consonants
