Course Outline
Course Objective:
• To gain knowledge about the tools and
techniques for sustainable design.
• To select the material, equipment and
development of a product.
• To adopt various software tools, process
and techniques for digital manufacturing.
• To apply these techniques into various
applications.
CO1
Identify a component in chosen product and apply the
sustainable design practices to improve the component
CO2
Select appropriate materials for the effective functioning of
the component
CO3
Utilize various tools to develop a design and to perform
design optimization
CO4 Demonstrate the developed component

Design is a
pictorial aspect
or a profile
given to a
certain object,
Designers use tools from
geometry and art.
Design is picturing things
using the imagination

Four types of design
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT REALIZATION
Business
design
• It includes design thinking and alike
methods that place the customer at the
focus of the design process, but
business design drives more by aiming
on profitable business models
Enterprise
design
• It is about bringing together all the
elements needed to make an enterprise
successfully deliver, using a holistic
and systemic design approach

The Four types of design
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT REALIZATION
Execution
design
• is the act of putting together a
technically sound, completely
coordinated, and fully scoped out set of
documents.
Products
design
• Product design describes the process of
imagining, creating, and iterating
products that solve users' problems or
address specific needs in a given
market

Product Design
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT REALIZATION
Product design consists of two types of designs,
engineering design and industrial design
Engineering design in product design is responsible
for designing internal parts and its result is layout
design
Engineering design in product design has been
referred to as mechanical design

The purpose of Engineering Design
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT REALIZATION
• It may involve experiments to
better understand the
problem (or a possible
solution),
• the goal of engineering
design is always to solve a
problem.
• Engineering design is finding
the best solution.
• Evaluation is an important
part of the process.

Introduction to Design Process
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT REALIZATION
• It is a creative planning process and it
leads to useful products and systems.
• It gives detailed description about any
component in a graphical form.
• Engineering drawing entails the use of
graphical symbols such as points, lines,
curves, planes and shapes.
• CAD is used to design, develop and
optimize the products.
Also creating and releasing the drawings for
understanding the design for manufacturing
products.

SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT REALIZATION
• Before considering the several facts
of design, first discuss the general
design process.
• It consists of six steps …

Recognition of need
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT REALIZATION
Designed Product
Cost
Customers
Feedback
Quality of
the
Product
• For example – Consider a fountain pen
• What is the need for the product design?
• Customer expectation
Quality writing
Aesthetics of the pen
Affordable cost
Based on the customer need, design for new
product created or existing design improved

Problem Definition
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT REALIZATION
• Product to be designed with complete statement and knowing the purpose of design.
Define
the
Problem
Input Parameters
Functional Characteristics
Constraints of the product
Performance of the operations
Example: For the considered Fountain pen
based on the needs of the customer the
following things to be considered to
develop the design.
▪ Geometry of the pen –Shape and size
▪ Material of the pen – Plastic/Aluminium
▪ Type of the ink

Synthesis
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT REALIZATION
• It is the process of planning the system or identifying the methods of completing the
specified purpose. It involves the number of iterations for the final products.
Synthesis
mechanism
materials
sizes
shapes
Example: For the considered Fountain pen
• Selecting the suitable method of producing
• Steps involved in manufacturing
• Listing the different material
• Deciding the rough dimensions
• Make or buy decision – Nib, Holder etc…

Analysis and Optimization
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT REALIZATION
• Examine the product with all suitable solutions.
• Proposed design also be analyzed with the existing design.
• Optimized the final product with feasible solutions.
Example: For the considered Fountain pen
• Deciding the optimized dimensions
• Deciding the appropriate material
• Deciding the suitable manufacturing methods like
Moulding/Casting/Forming
• Deciding on the expected life of the designed product

Evaluation
SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT REALIZATION
• It is the process of evaluating the design product which is given and assigned in the
problem definition.
Example: For the considered Fountain pen
• Prototype developed
• Testing the performance of the pen
• Quality control and Inspection
• Design satisfies the need or not?
• Final design approval for mass production
