2. What is life?
• Life (cf. biota) is a characteristic that distinguishes objects
that have signaling and self-sustaining processes (i.e., living
organisms) from those that do not, either because such
functions have ceased (death), or else because they lack
such functions and are classified as inanimate.
• The meaning of life is deeply entrenched in the
philosophical and religious conceptions of existence, social
ties, consciousness, and happiness, and borders on many
other issues, such as symbolic meaning, ontology, value,
purpose, ethics, good and evil, free will, conceptions of
God, the existence of God, the soul, and the afterlife.
3. What is pattern?
• A pattern, from the Frenchpatron, is a type of theme of
recurring events or objects, sometimes referred to as
elements of a set of objects.
• These elements repeat in a predictable manner. It can
be a template or model which can be used to generate
things or parts of a thing, especially if the things that are
created have enough in common for the underlying
pattern to be inferred, in which case the things are said to
exhibit the unique pattern.
• A repeated decorative design.
4. What is life pattern?
• The "record" of a person's (living organism) life, i.e., his
characteristics, achievements; the way he is perceived by others &God
(as considered by Religion).
• He is introvert - A shy, reticent, and typically self-centred person
• He is extrovert - An outgoing, overtly expressive person
• He is punctual.
• Indians are hard-working
• Indians are corrupt
• Germans are the best engineer.
• Life Pattern defines behaviour of an Individual
5. How are pattern forms
Genes
• Genes – Biology of a species define their life pattern
• Life Pattern often is species specific
• Life Pattern often breeds true
• Life Pattern change in response to alterations in
biological structures or processes
• Life Pattern, some behaviours run in families
• Life Pattern has an evolutionary history that persists
across related species
6. How are pattern forms
Values
• Values are our fundamental beliefs. They are the principles we use to
define that which is right, good and just. Values provide guidance as we
determine the right versus the wrong, the good versus the bad. They are our
standards.
• Consider the word “evaluate”. When we evaluate something we compare
it to a standard. We determine whether it meets that standard or falls short,
comes close or far exceeds. To evaluate is to determine the merit of a thing or
an action as compared to a standard.
• Typical values include honesty, integrity, compassion, courage, honor,
responsibility, patriotism, respect and fairness.
7. How are pattern forms
Moral
• Morals are values which we attribute to a system of
beliefs, typically a religious system, but it could be a
political system of some other set of beliefs. In the business
world we often find ourselves avoiding framing our ethical
choices in moral terms for fear that doing so might prove
offensive (lacking in respect or compassion) to some.
• By that definition one could categorize the values listed
above (honesty, integrity, compassion …) as “moral values” -
values derived from a higher authority.
8. How are pattern forms
Ethics
• Ethics is about our actions and decisions.

13. Global business
Thanks to globalization, you are likely to work with
Japanese, French, Chinese, German and all sorts of
other nationalities. It is important to recognize that
people from different cultures have are different in a
variety of ways, including
different ways of looking at things
different ways of dressing
different ways of expressing personality/goodness
14. In an ideal world ... In a living hell ...
the policemen would be the policemen would be
English German
the car mechanics would the car mechanics would be
be German French
the cooks would be French the cooks would be English
the innkeepers would be the innkeepers would be Italian
Swiss,
and the lovers would be Swiss
and the lovers would be
Italian
15. High Context vs Low Context
Interactions between high and low context peoples can be problematic.
Japanese can find Westerners to be offensively blunt. Westerners can find
Japanese to be secretive, devious and bafflingly unforthcoming with information
French can feel that Germans insult their intelligence by explaining the obvious,
while Germans can feel that French managers provide no direction
Low context cultures are vulnerable to communication breakdowns when they
assume more shared understanding than there really is. This is especially true in
an age of diversity. Low context cultures are not known for their ability to
tolerate or understand diversity, and tend to be more insular.
