          Season 5, episode 9
‘For Tonight You’re Only Here To Know’
Episode Synopsis
Mouth gets his big break, an on-
air gig covering the first Ravens
game of the year. As the teams
compete on the court, Peyton,
Brooke, Haley, Lindsay and Mia
have their own hard-fought
battle in the school library.
Type of group formed within
                 episode
Primary: Within the episode, a situation occurs in which a small group of friends are
stuck together that already hold personal bonds then differ to a stronger primary group
due to the break down of Lindsey that brings her and once enemy Peyton back together
as friends.

Permanent: The characters within this episode are a permanent group of friends,
but throughout the episode create a temporary group due to their situation of being
stuck together in the library together.


Formal & Informal: The group of friends within the episode are a formal group
due to their system of controlled and organised relationships as a whole, but a second
groups is then formed within the library and is an informal group this is due to the
choice of characters interacting by chance, rather than deliberately because they are
forced to stay in the library temporarily with members that they do not usually interact
with, but are in this case, due to the situation.
The different roles individuals adopt
                   within the group

 Task orientated: A task orientated leader is usually generally concerned with
 completing tasks and setting goals, they focus to get the job done.


 Socio-emotional: Individuals who take on socio-emotional roles communicate
 their feelings, opinions and values about the goal.They are concerned about
 maintaining the group and value each persons input. The individual who takes on
 this socio- emotional role helps the group to maintain harmony.


Destructive: destructive roles are characterised by behaviour that aims to sabotage
the efforts of the group, either consciously or unconsciously. Members who assume
these roles are dominant and negative, attacking and distracting, thus hampering the
groups work.
Peyton
Peyton takes on a number of different roles within the episode which include:

Role: Destructive/Blocker.
Eg. “Hey if you get tired dragging that fat ass of yours...”
- Time: 17:17mins
Role: Task orientated/ Implementer.
Eg. “ We order pizza online, we get it delivered here, and we get out!”
- Time: 19:30
Role: Destructive/Blocker.
Eg. “She’s got a decent taste in men”
- Time: 25:22mins
Role: Socio-emotional/Tension reliever.
Eg. “You know i could eat your neck like a vampire..”
- Time: 28:14mins
Role: Destructive/blocker.
Eg. “Don’t laugh at him”
-Time: 34:50mins
Role: Socio-emotional/advocate.
Eg. “Can I talk to you for a minute..?”
Brooke
        Some of the roles in which Brooke adapts to within the episode are;


Time: 25:00mins                                  Time: 18:34mins
Role: Destructive/aggressor                      Role: Socio-emotional/Tension reliever.
Eg. “Put me down! No! you idiot!”                Eg. “Just...no mushroom”.
Mia
       Mia adapts to a range of different roles throughout the episode which include;

Role: Socio-emotional/Confronter.
Eg. “ Why do you let that horrible stink of a mom boss you around all the
time?”

-Time: 17:50mins & 18:05mins
Role: Socio-emotional/Tension reliever.
Eg. 1.“ Ravens down by 8, wait let me refresh..”
Eg. 2. “Or a least order pizza, I’m starving”

-Time: 19:30mins
Role: Socio-emotional Mediator/Encourager.
Eg. “You did a great job with my record haley”.

-Time: 28:40mins
Role: Socio-emotional/Tension reliever.
Eg. “ Pot meet kettle, ass meet face..”
Lindsay
   Lindsay's roles within this episode are quite diverse, portraying characteristics of;

-Time: 10:00mins
Role: Destructive/blocker.
Eg. “We had plans, before you called me a bitch”.

-Time: 16:00mins
Role: Task orientated/ ?????
Eg. “I think i can break this window... I’m gonna do it”.

-Time: 24:05mins
Role: Destructive/Blocker
Eg. “Ok, lets check the score card on this one, little miss ‘pity me’”.

-Time: 35:50mins
Role: Socio-emotional/Advocate.
Eg.”Maybe we should move on”.
Haley
                   Some of the roles in which haley adapts to are;

-Time: 11:20mins
Role: Task orientated/Chair person.
Eg. Haley is on the phone trying for help “ Lindsay, no one can hear you calm down”.

-Time: 16:00mins
Role: Socio-emotional/ Encourager.
Eg. “ Are you okay? we’re gonna get out of here”

-Time: 18:50mins
Role: Socio-emotional/Peace keeper.
Eg. “Everybody just calm down”.
Tim
        Tim’s role within this episode is small yet, significant, he took on roles such as;

Time: 24:20mins
Role: Socio-emotional/Tension reliever.
Eg. “Tim is in da library!”

Time: 37:32mins
Role: Socio-emotional/Mediator.
Eg. “I guess i better get back to work “(opens library door).
Leadership styles, and their impact
Lucas
            Lucas demonstrates a Collaborative leadership style.

In the very beginning of the episode, prior to the library situation with
the girls, Lucas is talking to his basketball team in which are about to
play, he takes on a collaborative leadership style by consulting with the
team/group and his co-coaches by informing them about the game
and the process in which it will be occurring. Lucas’s role as a
collaborative leader has a positive impact on the groups dynamics due
to the fact that he is a well respected figure of the group, thus helping
them to succeed in winning the basketball game.
Peyton
Throughout the episode Peyton shows the leader ship styles of a Collaborative and an Autocratic.
 - Autocratic

 Peyton has demonstrated a collaborative role within the episode
 starting out when she tries to use her mobile phone to ring anybody
 she can to get them out of the library.She helps encourage other
 members and puts forwards ideas and suggestions.

Peyton’s role has impacted a positive effect on the groups dynamics as
she is trying to reach the goal in which all group members want
achieved, to get them out of the library. She then goes on suggesting
that Brooke should try and ring a man that she is dating, to try and help
them out, as Brooke is the only one with cell phone reception.


Peyton’s role then switches within the episode to an autocratic leader
as she come up with the idea to order pizza and get it delivered to the
library which will then mean someone will come and open the door to
let them out. Peyton makes the decision of choosing the pizza whilst
trying to involve the others as little as possible.
Brooke
Within the episode Brooke takes on the leadership style of an Autocratic.
Brooke demonstrates the role of an autocratic leader as she takes part
in using the cell phone at the beginning of the episode. Her role is
defined by the leader as she gets told to ring the man she is dating.

Brooke’s leadership has a positive effect on the groups dynamics due to
the fact she is trying to get out of the situation that the group are stuck
in, so herself and other group members do not miss the basketball
game.
Mia
      Mia demonstrates the leadership style of Laissez-Fair within the episode
Mia demonstrates the role of a Laissez-Fair leader as half way into the
episode she comes up with the idea to break the tension within the
group, she starts to tell each group member what good qualities they
possess. Mia exercises little control throughout the episode and leaves
the members of the group to sort out their own problems. This action
shows a positive impact on the groups dynamics as she is trying to
make the two members in the group who don’t get along, Peyton and
Lindsey, try to resolve their differences and get along on their own, but
through her sly idea.
Haley
Haley takes on the leadership style of an Autocratic and Collaborative within the episode.
 Haley plays the part of an autocratic leader throughout the
 episode as she uses the phone in the first 10 mins of being stuck
 in the library to make a call to anyone in order to try and get out
 of the library.
 This has a positive impact on the groups dynamics as she is tying
 to help other member in the group as well as herself reach the
 goal in which they have set, which is to get out of the library.

 Haley’s leadership role switches over to collaborative, when she is
 trying to stop a fight between Peyton and Lindsay in which occurs
 in the middle of the episode by trying to maintain control of the
 group then acts as a consultant to try and defuse the situation.
 This leadership style has a positive impact on the groups
 dynamics as she is setting a calm mood and maintaining order so
 that the group can carry on together.
Tim
  Tim demonstrates the role of a Laissez- Faire leader within the episode.

Tim’s leadership style is that of Laissez-Faire,as throughout the entire time
he was in the library he fully knows that he can get himself and his group
out of the situation they are put in by taking off the hinge of the door. He
has little control over the group and lets them sort out their own problems.

This leadership style can be looked at from both a positive and a negative
side, the positive effect on the groups dynamics is that when he states he
misses the group because they rarely keep in contact anymore, he is trying
to bring the group together. This can also be looked at as a negative impact
on the groups dynamics as he clearly knows he can get himself and them
other group members out of library, although chooses not to, this can be
seen as a negative impact due to the fact the whole group then miss the
basketball game they came to the school in the first place to watch.

One Tree Hill Library Lock-In

  • 1. One Tree Hill One Tree Hill Season 5, episode 9 ‘For Tonight You’re Only Here To Know’
  • 2. Episode Synopsis Mouth gets his big break, an on- air gig covering the first Ravens game of the year. As the teams compete on the court, Peyton, Brooke, Haley, Lindsay and Mia have their own hard-fought battle in the school library.
  • 3. Type of group formed within episode Primary: Within the episode, a situation occurs in which a small group of friends are stuck together that already hold personal bonds then differ to a stronger primary group due to the break down of Lindsey that brings her and once enemy Peyton back together as friends. Permanent: The characters within this episode are a permanent group of friends, but throughout the episode create a temporary group due to their situation of being stuck together in the library together. Formal & Informal: The group of friends within the episode are a formal group due to their system of controlled and organised relationships as a whole, but a second groups is then formed within the library and is an informal group this is due to the choice of characters interacting by chance, rather than deliberately because they are forced to stay in the library temporarily with members that they do not usually interact with, but are in this case, due to the situation.
  • 4. The different roles individuals adopt within the group Task orientated: A task orientated leader is usually generally concerned with completing tasks and setting goals, they focus to get the job done. Socio-emotional: Individuals who take on socio-emotional roles communicate their feelings, opinions and values about the goal.They are concerned about maintaining the group and value each persons input. The individual who takes on this socio- emotional role helps the group to maintain harmony. Destructive: destructive roles are characterised by behaviour that aims to sabotage the efforts of the group, either consciously or unconsciously. Members who assume these roles are dominant and negative, attacking and distracting, thus hampering the groups work.
  • 5. Peyton Peyton takes on a number of different roles within the episode which include: - Time: 10.00mins Role: Destructive/Blocker. Eg. “Hey if you get tired dragging that fat ass of yours...” - Time: 17:17mins Role: Task orientated/ Implementer. Eg. “ We order pizza online, we get it delivered here, and we get out!” - Time: 19:30 Role: Destructive/Blocker. Eg. “She’s got a decent taste in men” - Time: 25:22mins Role: Socio-emotional/Tension reliever. Eg. “You know i could eat your neck like a vampire..” - Time: 28:14mins Role: Destructive/blocker. Eg. “Don’t laugh at him” -Time: 34:50mins Role: Socio-emotional/advocate. Eg. “Can I talk to you for a minute..?”
  • 6. Brooke Some of the roles in which Brooke adapts to within the episode are; Time: 25:00mins Time: 18:34mins Role: Destructive/aggressor Role: Socio-emotional/Tension reliever. Eg. “Put me down! No! you idiot!” Eg. “Just...no mushroom”.
  • 7. Mia Mia adapts to a range of different roles throughout the episode which include; -Time: 14:06mins Role: Socio-emotional/Confronter. Eg. “ Why do you let that horrible stink of a mom boss you around all the time?” -Time: 17:50mins & 18:05mins Role: Socio-emotional/Tension reliever. Eg. 1.“ Ravens down by 8, wait let me refresh..” Eg. 2. “Or a least order pizza, I’m starving” -Time: 19:30mins Role: Socio-emotional Mediator/Encourager. Eg. “You did a great job with my record haley”. -Time: 28:40mins Role: Socio-emotional/Tension reliever. Eg. “ Pot meet kettle, ass meet face..”
  • 8. Lindsay Lindsay's roles within this episode are quite diverse, portraying characteristics of; -Time: 10:00mins Role: Destructive/blocker. Eg. “We had plans, before you called me a bitch”. -Time: 16:00mins Role: Task orientated/ ????? Eg. “I think i can break this window... I’m gonna do it”. -Time: 24:05mins Role: Destructive/Blocker Eg. “Ok, lets check the score card on this one, little miss ‘pity me’”. -Time: 35:50mins Role: Socio-emotional/Advocate. Eg.”Maybe we should move on”.
  • 9. Haley Some of the roles in which haley adapts to are; -Time: 11:20mins Role: Task orientated/Chair person. Eg. Haley is on the phone trying for help “ Lindsay, no one can hear you calm down”. -Time: 16:00mins Role: Socio-emotional/ Encourager. Eg. “ Are you okay? we’re gonna get out of here” -Time: 18:50mins Role: Socio-emotional/Peace keeper. Eg. “Everybody just calm down”.
  • 10. Tim Tim’s role within this episode is small yet, significant, he took on roles such as; Time: 24:20mins Role: Socio-emotional/Tension reliever. Eg. “Tim is in da library!” Time: 37:32mins Role: Socio-emotional/Mediator. Eg. “I guess i better get back to work “(opens library door).
  • 11. Leadership styles, and their impact
  • 12. Lucas Lucas demonstrates a Collaborative leadership style. In the very beginning of the episode, prior to the library situation with the girls, Lucas is talking to his basketball team in which are about to play, he takes on a collaborative leadership style by consulting with the team/group and his co-coaches by informing them about the game and the process in which it will be occurring. Lucas’s role as a collaborative leader has a positive impact on the groups dynamics due to the fact that he is a well respected figure of the group, thus helping them to succeed in winning the basketball game.
  • 13. Peyton Throughout the episode Peyton shows the leader ship styles of a Collaborative and an Autocratic. - Autocratic Peyton has demonstrated a collaborative role within the episode starting out when she tries to use her mobile phone to ring anybody she can to get them out of the library.She helps encourage other members and puts forwards ideas and suggestions. Peyton’s role has impacted a positive effect on the groups dynamics as she is trying to reach the goal in which all group members want achieved, to get them out of the library. She then goes on suggesting that Brooke should try and ring a man that she is dating, to try and help them out, as Brooke is the only one with cell phone reception. Peyton’s role then switches within the episode to an autocratic leader as she come up with the idea to order pizza and get it delivered to the library which will then mean someone will come and open the door to let them out. Peyton makes the decision of choosing the pizza whilst trying to involve the others as little as possible.
  • 14. Brooke Within the episode Brooke takes on the leadership style of an Autocratic. Brooke demonstrates the role of an autocratic leader as she takes part in using the cell phone at the beginning of the episode. Her role is defined by the leader as she gets told to ring the man she is dating. Brooke’s leadership has a positive effect on the groups dynamics due to the fact she is trying to get out of the situation that the group are stuck in, so herself and other group members do not miss the basketball game.
  • 15. Mia Mia demonstrates the leadership style of Laissez-Fair within the episode Mia demonstrates the role of a Laissez-Fair leader as half way into the episode she comes up with the idea to break the tension within the group, she starts to tell each group member what good qualities they possess. Mia exercises little control throughout the episode and leaves the members of the group to sort out their own problems. This action shows a positive impact on the groups dynamics as she is trying to make the two members in the group who don’t get along, Peyton and Lindsey, try to resolve their differences and get along on their own, but through her sly idea.
  • 16. Haley Haley takes on the leadership style of an Autocratic and Collaborative within the episode. Haley plays the part of an autocratic leader throughout the episode as she uses the phone in the first 10 mins of being stuck in the library to make a call to anyone in order to try and get out of the library. This has a positive impact on the groups dynamics as she is tying to help other member in the group as well as herself reach the goal in which they have set, which is to get out of the library. Haley’s leadership role switches over to collaborative, when she is trying to stop a fight between Peyton and Lindsay in which occurs in the middle of the episode by trying to maintain control of the group then acts as a consultant to try and defuse the situation. This leadership style has a positive impact on the groups dynamics as she is setting a calm mood and maintaining order so that the group can carry on together.
  • 17. Tim Tim demonstrates the role of a Laissez- Faire leader within the episode. Tim’s leadership style is that of Laissez-Faire,as throughout the entire time he was in the library he fully knows that he can get himself and his group out of the situation they are put in by taking off the hinge of the door. He has little control over the group and lets them sort out their own problems. This leadership style can be looked at from both a positive and a negative side, the positive effect on the groups dynamics is that when he states he misses the group because they rarely keep in contact anymore, he is trying to bring the group together. This can also be looked at as a negative impact on the groups dynamics as he clearly knows he can get himself and them other group members out of library, although chooses not to, this can be seen as a negative impact due to the fact the whole group then miss the basketball game they came to the school in the first place to watch.
