A Critique of the Proposed National Education Policy Reform
Question 2
1. Question 2: How does your
media product represent
particular social groups
2. In the top image is Liam Neeson acting ‘Taken’, he is on
the phone talking to the captors that have taken his
daughter. In the image below is Danielle Tama who is
talking to the captor that has her boyfriend. They are
both similar in terms of the roles they have to play
however Danielle totally challenges the common hero
stereotype in a number of ways.
Liam Neeson is a white, straight male which is the most
desired characteristics in the film industry. He is the type
of actor that plays the protagonist in all thriller films.
Danielle on the other hand is a teenager, female and
black- the complete opposite. Most black people are
portrayed as the antagonist or victim in films furthermore
they are unlikely to be female especially a teenager. Due
to social influence when we see Danielle we would never
expect her to be the character that save someone,
especially a male because it is normally the guy that save
the girl. Nonetheless, Danielle plays the protagonist hero
who will save the day.
3. The above image is Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds and below
is Hassan, they are both tied up and being held hostage. In both
scenes the victims are represented as weak and vulnerable.
Although of different class, age and ethnicities they are both able
to be portrayed in danger. In the modern film industry of today,
black people tend to be cast in only certain roles that can be
considered racist or at a minimum, stereotypical.
