2. VASTU is a traditional Hindu system of architecture or the science of
architecture.
The word vastu is derived from the word vasu, or the earth,
Shastra, is defined as “science or technology”.
Other translations define vastu to mean “the place where people dwell”.
INTRODUCTION
•Vastu Shashtra developed between 6000 BCE to 3000 BCE.
•It evolved during VEDIC times of India.
•The mention of Vastu Shastra can be found in ancient scriptures like
RIGVEDA,
ATHARVAVEDA, RAMAYANA,MAHABHARATA, first used by Indian
maharajas and later on it spread in whole world.
•Its concepts transfers to Tibet, China and Japan where it provided the
base for development of what is now called FENG SHUI.

3. In the beginning, the first living creature was Brahma. He is the creator of the Universe
and the first god in the Hindu triad: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. But, Brahma had a habit
of experimenting with some rather impractical creations. So, Brahma created monstrous
creature that grew so rapidly and large that its shadow fell across the Earth . Then the
Monster began to destroying everything in its path for nothing .
Shiva and Vishnu complained to the Brahma. They begged that something be done
before all of Creation was destroyed by this Creature.
Brahma listened to these complaints and then called the asthadigapalakas, the devas of
the eight cardinal directions. Together they overpowered the Great Monster and in one
cosmic tackle, they held it flat against the Earth. The god Brahma jumped in the middle
and held the Monster down. He then employed forty-five gods to join him and help hold
it in place.
But, the Monster lamented “Why am I being punished for being the very thing you made
me?” And, Brahma heeded to its complaint. “We shall compromise”, Brahma said. So,
he made the Monster immortal and promised that he would be worshipped by any mortal
that built a structure over him. The Monster was pleased and Brahma then named him
Vastu Purusa and blessed him with these words: “All works on the earth will have to be
commenced and concluded only after propitiating you”. In essence, without respecting
Vastu Purusa nothing will happen on the earth.

• Vastu Purusha is present in each
and every plot.
• It has a fixed and peculiar body.
Its head remains hanging down
and his body is spread all over the
length and breadth of the ground.
• If construction is not according to
Vastu then he tease the people so it
is necessary to worship him before
beginning of construction

6. According to the fundamentals of Vastu Shastra, the whole of the world consists of five basic
elements known as the PANCHA MAHA BHOOTA. And it is important to note that out of the
eight planets in the solar system, only Earth has life because of the existence of balance in
these five elements. The five elements are as follows,
• Air
•Water
•Earth
•Fire
•Space

Vastu is a science of enhance: Peace, Happiness & Prosperity. Vastu is a balance
of positive energies derived from five elements. Which should be properly placed
as required by Vastu Norms. This brings harmony to give us the Peace ,
Happiness & Prosperity.

THE DIRECTIONS
•North – This Zone should be kept light or open, clean, it is a source of energy.
It is considered the house of Kuber or wealth.
•North East – Zone of divine powers.
•North West – Zone of Air .
•South - The God of death or Yam or the area of freeing one’s soul (moksha).
•South East - Zone of fire. Source of health.(related to fire, cooking & food).
•South West - Effects the longivity of life.
•West - Zone of Water.
•East - Zone of Lord Indra & Lord Sun. It is the second source of energy.

•Vastu is a systematic study of the geological impact of the rays of sun on earth.
•East-south-west is considered as the Solar kingdom & west,north-east is called
Lunar kingdom.
•During sunrise the sun provide energy for promotion of life. It lies in east
direction and its primary energy is good for existence of life.
•During noon the sun exactly lies above head which is its scorching and
devastating state. This is the reason why south is called direction of YAMA
(lord of death).
RELATION WITH SCIENCE
According to Vastu, we
should not work under
beams and bars. The
scientific reason
behind this is
tremendous
gravitational force
acting on beams and
bars directly transfer
on us which lead to
uneasy feelings.

10. JAIPUR ACCORDING TO VASTU
•Jaipur is the first planned city in India. Its
planning followed the Principle of vastu-
shastra, according to this shastra the site
should be divided into grids or mandalas .
•Planned according to the Prastara type of
layout.
•Thus plan of Jaipur is a grid plan with gridline
being the city’s main streets.
•The central axis of the town was laid from
East to west between the
gates of the Sun (Suraj pol) and the Moon
(Chand pol).
•In this plan crossed two roads at right angles
dividing the town in to almost square ,
almost equally size blocks.

complete in the NW due to
the presence of the hills.
•On the other hand in SE an
extra square has been
added that plugged the
gap between the city and
the eastern hills.
•Following the direction of
the Vastu Shastra, width
of the main streets & other
lanes were fixed. Thus the
main streets of the city
were 111 ft wide ,
secondary streets 55 ft
wide & the smaller ones 27
ft wide.

After the whole study of vastu , we come to
know that vastu is a set of rules derived on the
basis of science . This is not just a myth . But
still it is up to you that how much you believe
in vastu shastra .
So, the conclusion is that if your house follows
the rules of vastu , then there will be more
happiness , wealth and health .
